Juanita & Maude
Juanita & Maude's cozy dining room and bar is the perfect spot for a night out, celebratory occasion and special private events. Conveniently located near the corner of Solano and San Pablo Avenues, Juanita & Maude is the perfect place to eat before a show at the Albany Twin, Ivy Room or simply seeking an exceptional experience.
Great snacks at the bar late evening. Was perfect
Service was great. Friendly and accommodating. Food was excellent. A few of the dishes were truly superb. A bit noisy for my taste but not too bad.
I thought the food was pretty good. There were some items that we did not enjoy (such as the olives and the Spaghetti) but others that we really liked, such as the jerk chicken, Ahi tuna carpaccio and shrimp and grits.
From an ambiance standpoint, I understand the trend of minimalism but this place really kind of took it to far- I was staring at a twig on the wall most of the night - I wish they painted or did something to give people something to look at. There is an outdoor area in the back that seemed a bit warmer - maybe Ill request that area next time.
Overall Ill definitely come back.
Exquisite meal, service, and ambiance. Everything cooked to perfection, great flavor combinations, varied choices. Wine was fantastic and affordable too!
4 people and three did not like entrees. Have been there 6 times and always liked it before.
Jerked chicken had strange dense texture and not much flavor, likewise coconut rice and the beans. Liked the caesar salad. Dessert ho hm. Sorry about this as had always felt place could be relied on for better than average food.
Excellent food as always! Only complaint is that no one , and I mean no one acknowledged our presence as we stood waiting for the maitre d to appear. The bar tender was 5 feet away and never once looked at us with even a nod. The servers ignored us as if we were invisible. But as I stated the food was amazing. It’s a small space and the noise level is high.
Frequently like to try restaurants that are new to me; many times disappointed. This was fantastic and can’t wait to return to sit in the back patio. Started with excellent service, help picking a wine which was excellent. Loved the taquito starter and the Caesar salad (both shared with my companion). My pork sausage with it’s sides was very tasty and friend’s steak was melt in your mouth. Bread was good with it’s special butter. No room for dessert. Space very attractive with nice amount of room between tables.
This is my favorite new restaurant. So wonderful Delicious food. Excellent service.
So lovely to eat on the patio and the service is so friendly and the knowledgeable server such a treat!
We brought family from out of town and they couldn’t stop raving about every dish. One family from Missouri claimed it was the best fried chicken they’d ever had. I particularly loved the Tuna carpaccio. Service was amazing. We sat outside on the patio and it was so warm and festive. Bringing a big group is fun because you get to order everything. Definitely share dishes and explore the whole menu. And don’t skip dessert!
I just wrotea review, but the robot lost it. Dinner at J$M was forgettable except for the price.
Chez Panisse wannrbe
A great find! Tried several things off the menu and shared with four people. Highly recommend because its hard to make a choice! Everything is so good!
The food was wonderful and so was the service. The room was fairly noisy but overall we had a great experience. A special shout out to the miso pork chop, and the ribeye steak. The panzanella that accompanied the ribeye was amazing.
The staff was very welcoming and while we waited (we were early) they brought us complimentary champagne. Food was delicious, service attentive without being overbearing. They kept bringing us more water, which all of us appreciated. The ahi appetizer was perfect.
A bit noisy, and close quarters, but the food was great and the service personable. We started with an excellent Caesar salad with lemon, anchovy and croutons ($13). The Shrimp and Grits came next and were superb--3 large prawns perfectly cooked and spiced, a succulent dish but a bit pricey at $19. We shared a skirt steak with grilled asparagus and panzanella as our main course dish, and it went beautifully with a glass of burgundy. Dessert was a tough choice: we opted for the Almond Financier / poached apricot / brown butter ($13) and did not regret it—at all! Everyone from the maître d' to the waiter and the pastry chef helped us celebrate our anniversary. A wonderful evening--and a good place for a special treat!
Great neighborhood place that fills a niche - tasty, inventive food and a terrific bar.
If exquisite and tasty and artful are your thing in a meal out, you can't go wrong at Juanita and Maude's. Chef Eastman and his wife Ariane Owens who reimagined a formerly chopped up, noisy and cramped-feeling room (as Nizza la Bella) knock it out of the park! Ahi carpaccio in a light pool of the most delicious olive oil seasoned with salt, pepper, mint, fennel seed was great intro, along with a glass of Spumanti. We shared gnudi (think "gnocci") with pesto, and another main course of meatballs with eggplant and a robust but balanced red tomato sauce. Our friends shared a modified Caesar (hold the anchovies) and also another plate of the meatballs. Portions somewhere between dainty and "enough" .... you leave feeling sated, not bloated. And yes, do save room for dessert! The staff make you feel welcome, not rushed, not looked down upon, and as other reviewers have said, almost as if you're going to a good friend's house for dinner (or in our case, it was like being invited over by one of my favorite nieces or nephews). Service not A+ perfect, but no major dings, and so pleasant, the whole crew help each other to keep things flowing.
Will be back!! Make sure to spring the extra $5 for bread.... We did not, and after Spumanti, a bottle of French Burgundy (shared by three of us), a decaf cappuccino, two desserts (shared by four) and the general richness and variety flavors of the food, although the entire dining experience was delicious and lovely, an hour or so later both my husband and I found ourselves with queasy tummies lasting all night... But now I know better, and will just order the danged bread on future visits.
Looking forward to next time....I love having this neighborhood gem so close to home (a few blocks away), and the menu and price range allow going for something light without breaking the piggy bank.
This is one of our favorite restaurants for any night of the week, and especially for special occasions.
Great food and ambiance! Just a little too pricey for my budget. But I would recommend it to my friends.
Food was good. Extremely fresh and delicious. Our server was outstanding. There was a delay on our food but it was fine. We had olives, sautéed mushrooms, Cesar salad, shrimp and grits, vegetarian gumbo, and salmon. Cheesecake. Portions are extremely small but we got full. Corkage fee $20. A deal. Food was delicious. But it’s expensive. The seats are wood and not comfortable and the place is very noisy. I’ll go back when I save money.
Love the food- original and tasty. My 4th time here. Not great for the hard of hearing- a bit noisy
Love this place. Great food, nice people. We usually sit in the back area which is outside and is very quiet compared to the main dining area inside.
Amazing meal! We sat on the outside patio and it was inviting and not too crowded. The fried chicken was excellent and the malted chocolate cake was one of the best desserts I've ever had. A bit pricey, but worth it, especially for a special occasion.
We loved Chef Eastman’s cooking at Corso, and it is even better here. We sat outside in the back and it was more than pleasant as we dined on duck taquitos, shrimp n grits, salmon and steak! Definitely coming back...again and again
Had a great meal with wonderful service! Normally would not order a hamburger. I am really glad I did - worth trying if it is the special!
We heard about Juanita & Maude from an episode of Check Please, Bay Area. It looked great and didn't disappoint. The food was delicious and the service was very good. The space was a little noisy but manageable. My favorite dishes were the Tuna carpaccio and chicken pate from the beginnings, and the Shrimp & Grits from the Firsts were to die for! So good. I would definitely go back!
I loved this restaurant for its ambience and ambitious menu, but unfortunately my husband didn't like the food nor the menu - he likes more standard food. Sigh. I'll try to return with some girlfriends.
Two of the five plates we ordered were the usual home runs we’ve come to expect from Jaunita & Maude. The others weren’t bad, just not up to the lofty standards we’ve had there previously.
Favorite east bay spot. Quality driven and something for everyone.
Better than ever. Ate with friends on the outdoor patio in back
Service great, food terrific
Couldnt have bern better
An instant neighborhood star serving up to-the-moment fresh food in a style that will shock no one but please almost everyone. Call its food confidently understated, professionally served and with lovingly perfected recipes. ALso, a surprisingly long and diverse wine list: on one of the hottest nights of the year, when I was craving the hanger steak, a featherweight cru Beaujolais-Village really sang.
Amazing service and food. Menu is unlike any other restaurant.
Another fantastic meal! The outdoor space is lovely and fairly quiet (inside can be noisier) and the service and food were on point as always.
We enjoyed a quiet outdoor table with excellent service. Our salad and pasta dishes were delicious, but portions were small for the price. The burger & fries special was nicely done but also quite expensive at $21. The hanger steak entree was also very good but pricey.
Another spectacular meal at J&M. Every experience there brings something new on the menu and this time was no different. I was tempted to just order all the starters, but refrained. The dumplings were delicious as always and the Gnudi fresh as Spring with fava beans. The spicy house-made pork sausage with white beans was a delight, but again the strawberry granita with Parmesan ice cream was over the top. Thank you to the stellar and informative staff supporting some of the best cooking the East Bay has to offer.
The noise level is in acceptable. The gathering by the bar is not large enough for people coming in to sit down with a reservation,
Our good came very late after those around us who had come in after us were served
The waitress was fine and put her arm around my husbands shpulders
Second time there. Food, service is exceptional!
J+M is always a great experience. The staff is charming, the food and drinks are delicious, and the setting is lovely.
The donburi is excellent. Great wine list and service.
Lovely neighborhood restaurant with an interesting menu that changes daily. Everything is high quality, delicious and beautifully plated without being fussy. The relaxed and friendly atmosphere makes it a wonderful place for a dinner party. Will be returning often.
