Self-proclaimed as the oldest line cook in Houston, Jonathan opened Jonathan’s The Rub with the purpose and mission of providing guests with excellent food in an unmatched dining experience; a mission that Jonathan passionately maintains today. You’ll notice our restaurant features an open kitchen where diners can see, smell and hear the behind-the-scenes events of Jonathan and the other cooks preparing their dishes. (You'll have to experience it for yourself.) Jonathan's The Rub is a place for you to visit, feel comfortable, be yourself and, hopefully, leave with a few more friends and a satisfied appetite.

JTR was at the top of its game as everything was phenomenal!
My red snapper with Santa Cruz sauce was cooked perfectly and my husband raved about his red snapper & shrimp creole dish. The staff was very attentive and accommodated every request we had. I highly recommend this great restaurant!!

My wife and I were cramped into a tiny table for two right next to the kitchen door and in a narrow hallway. The other two table offered were not that much better. We decided to walk out. I understand the food is good but the ambiance is terrible!

The spaghetti and meatballs was awful. The sauce literally tasted like you opened up a can of hunts tomato sauce and poured it straight on the pasta- same tin flavor. Both of us ordered it and complained after two bites. We left the entire bowls uneaten. No apologies, no offer to exchange.

Seems like when Jonathan is not on site since opening the second location, things are noticeably different in terms of what’s coming out of the kitchen...two recent visits, same impression.

We were disappointed, especially in comparison to our recent visit on Valentine’s Day. My wife’s pan seared redfish was very over cooked - almost burned on the skin side. My redfish special would have been a great dish but for the extreme heat. We shared a chocolate “mousse” that could have been matched by a box of Jello pudding.

Maybe the quality control in the kitchen was MIA at the Astros ALCS Championship game that night.

The service was excellent, almost too attentive. The food was fantastic, I had forgotten about the huge portions, could have easily shared. Love great food and great service and the ability to bring wine from our cellar.

The unpleasant seafood smell that greeted us at the door should have been a reminder this will not go well. We each chose easy dishes and left universally disappointed. At these high prices a pleasing meal should be certain. Not even close. The BYOB option is the only unique offering but the $20 corkage is again way overpriced for the lame experience.

Friendly staff didn’t quite make up for the quality of the food. The restaurant came highly recommended but the vary basic, slightly shabby decor and mediocre food did not live up to the hype. Veal Marsala on a bed of angel hair pasta was drowned in the sauce but the mushrooms were quite good. The sea bass ($44) was mushy and had a dry coating on it — was supposed to have been pan seared. Chicken Parmesan was good as was the fried chicken and grits, garlic mashed potatoes had good flavor but too much skin and a bit gritty. Nice that it is BYOB w/ $20 corkage if you want to bring a nice wine. No complimentary bread, crackers or breadsticks, which is kind of chintzy when entrees range between $29 and $44. Wanted to support neighborhood business but overall disappointing meal.

We were disappointed with our meal quality. We shared the broiled snapper and found it a bit undercooked and the broccoli was almost too hard to cut apart....We have been coming here for a number of years and have come to take the great service and food for granted. We both felt let down a bit when we left.

This was the third time that I have been to the original Jonathan’s The Rub. Each time has been consistent: the food is above average, however the wait staff is unfriendly to the point of being sour, and the atmosphere is lacking due to the overcrowding of tables. Somehow the place is always packed so I keep giving it a try, thinking there’s something that I must be missing. But for me, service is a big factor in my enjoyment when dining out, and when the waitress failed to notify me that there was a $2 up charge for my choice of the Brussels sprouts as a side dish, it just cemented my decision to mark this restaurant off my list.

Have been wanting to try this restaurant ever since I moved to Houston. I was a bit disappointed however when I finally did. First of all, it was very crowded, very loud, and the tables are tiny. Not only small, but literally almost touching your neighboring diners. Oh well, if the food is wonderful it'll be worth it. We started with the dumplings on the HRW menu. Our waiter came to the table with a bowl and said "Dumplings?" and almost threw them on the table. If they had landed any harder the sauce would've spilled out. No extra plate so I guess we are just supposed to eat them out of the bowl. I will say that they were pretty good, but nothing to rave about. My friend ordered snapper, but specifically said she did not want it blackened and the server said no problem we can have it pan fried. I ordered a sirloin, medium, and the server clarified that I meant pink, no red. Yes thank you. My friend's snapper came out blackened, and my steak came to me totally uncooked in the middle.
We both sent our meals back. My steak came back correctly, but they must have put it on the same plate that I previously had because my mashed potatoes were now cold. My friend enjoyed her pan seared snapper, but again, said it was not anything to write home about. The best part of the meal was undoubtedly the nutella cheesecake. It was delicious, but funny thing, did not taste anything like nutella, more like a chocolate and vanilla cheesecake. But we loved it.
All in all, I'd say once they got my steak correct, it was delicious. And the dessert was incredibly good. We did have a nice bottle of wine, but for $140 meal, it was definitely lacking. I know that things get hectic, especially during HRW, so I will probably go back for another try and will get just steak and cheescake!

Came for the HRW menu. Food was excellent. The service was just so-so. Brought me the wrong appetizer, then took a long time to get the correct one. The servers team approach is too jumbled, no continuity, and seems rushed. Almost immediately after our dessert was brought to the table and before the first bite, the check was on the table.

A friend and I hit the original JTR for their HRW menu. JTR had an extensive menu for HRW and we were not disappointed. The Wedge was one of the most generous portions I’ve seen yet and the Denver Roast was amazing. Chicken Picatta hit the spot. We each had the Nutella Cheesecake to end the meal. The only negative is that the tables are extremely close together and the noise level was LOUD. We overlooked that though given the quality of the food. FYI they allow BYOB and have a small but thoughtful wine list. We selected a Columbia River Cabernet Sauvignon which perfectly accompanied our meal.

My friend ad I met for lunch. My chicken salad croissant was excellent but my friend's pecan crusted trout was so bland that she requested lemon butter and then it was just ok. Service was confusing, served by at least 4 people. Never did anyone ask if we needed anything.

Trying HRW menu and lobster tacos. First and last visit. A fight amongst employees ensued and lasted for 10 minutes. My bad for not calling police, was a tense situation and had everyone rattled. No need to come dressed in business attire, hole in the wall atmosphere.

Off the wall loud -- head banging music, employees using their best cuss words, no convo was to be had over the shouting. Awful business lunch for $70. Wait staff rattled they forgot the side and the dessert, and brought out lobster tacos that were pitiful in texture, presentation and cold dead French fries. For a first time visit, it was a serious disappointment as my office is a few blocks away and even with limited parking I would have liked another dining option.

Life is too short to be concerned about dining during possible crossfire. Will never return.

We went for restaurant week to try the food at a good price at least that’s what we thought. The 3 course menu for 45$ wasn’t worth the price at all. It was even more expensive than a la carte.
Pricey menu, food not good, very noisy restaurant and service was very slow.
Definitely it might have been a good restaurant in the past but not anymore.

We were glad we tried JTR during Houston Restaurant Weeks. The chicken & sausage gumbo and meatballs were good. The pecan crusted trout was flavorless, so we had to add salt in order to eat it. The cheese sauce on the mac & cheese was too thick. It made my mouth very dry. I had to drink water to try to get it down. The brussel sprouts were still very hard and needed a little salt and pepper. The snickers pie and nutella cheesecake was still frozen, so they were difficult to enjoy.
