Jonathan's The Rub
Small restaurant, local place.
Wait staff was a little slow.
Incredible Service !!!
Thank you Ben for taking care of us.
Jonathan’s is where fine food and comfort come together in inventive ways. Chef makes the most of our local bounty. Starter salad was delicious with homemade Greek dressing. I ordered the snapper with jalapeño cilantro cream sauce. The sauce was creamy but not spicy at all, and only had one lonely leaf of cilantro. The high quality 1/2-fish filet was beautiful, thick, bone-free and crispy on the outside. Presented with tail on! My husband’s filet was good and his mac n cheese was very cheesy and light on the bacon. Overall, delicious. Paired with generous wine pours and patient, friendly service, our meal was excellent.
yes the atmosphere is casual but the quality of the meat is outstanding A great place to enjoy a high end meal in a moderate environment.
Loved all the food. Staff was friendly and knowledgeable. We will definitely be back.
I like most dishes I eat at Johathan's but always feel they could lighten dishes up a bit. They seem a little heavy on the oils and fats. I would feel a bit "lighter and healthier" if they were able to accomplish this. Jmo.
we celebrated new year @ Jonathan's, food was excellent.
Overall, very good and will go again. Only reason for not 5 stars across the board is the atmosphere. We sat right next to the open kitchen. On other nights it might be fine, but on New Years Eve, it was chaos. Food was great, service super good. But for around $100 per person, I expect near perfect. Table right on the main foot traffic route just too much for a perfect score.
Food was good but not as good as usual. How do you run out of pasta on NYE?
Great place to have dinner with a good bottle of wine! Excellent service and more items on the menu than one might imagine. For the size of this place. Very small and intimate setting. Loved it!
Food is very good.
Really cramped space. Out of bread because there had been a delivery problem, apparently. The entire place was worn down and visually unappealing. It felt like they let Kirkland’s do the decorating and then just let it go downhill from there. Limited parking with multiple cars taking up two spaces. Underwhelming wine list (FYI, it’s just beer and wine, no liquor, something I apparently missed while making the reservation). Confused orders. The ceviche was coated in something yellowish and had that preservative-based shine. It was mixed with soggy and inappropriate vegetables and thoroughly unappetizing. No one was impressed with their entrees and there were six of us. They fry in peanut oil, which isn’t helpful with a peanut allergy. Personnel were courteous enough, but the “team service” they attempt is executed poorly. Received free deserts because of the bread shortage, so yea that, I suppose. Steamed dumpling appetizer was good, if nothing else. Not going back, if I need to make that clear. This place is a train wreck.
Called ahead of time and let them know it was my husband’s birthday. After we had dinner the waitress brought the bill, I reminded her that it was my husbands birthday. She said we could order a dessert from the menu and all the waiters would sing Happy Birthday. Very disappointed all I wanted was for them to bring a small cookie or a brownie with a candle. For the cost of the food and corkage fee you’d think they could provide a birthday treat.
Amazing! The food was incredible and so was the service we received from Pam.
Good dining experience. “Argentine “, a disappointment .
We both found it a tough piece of meat.
Great food and service as always. We’ll be back
Best place in town!
We loved our whole experience but it took a long time to get our food. I realize it was Friday night and a packed house but we waited way too long to get our food.
Might have been our favorite meal ever at JTR!! Had the Japanese Sea Bass & Gaucho Burger...awesome!!...plus outstanding service, as always.
JTR was at the top of its game as everything was phenomenal!
My red snapper with Santa Cruz sauce was cooked perfectly and my husband raved about his red snapper & shrimp creole dish. The staff was very attentive and accommodated every request we had. I highly recommend this great restaurant!!
Food and customer service was amazing! We felt a bit crowded but overall it was great!
My wife and I were cramped into a tiny table for two right next to the kitchen door and in a narrow hallway. The other two table offered were not that much better. We decided to walk out. I understand the food is good but the ambiance is terrible!
The spaghetti and meatballs was awful. The sauce literally tasted like you opened up a can of hunts tomato sauce and poured it straight on the pasta- same tin flavor. Both of us ordered it and complained after two bites. We left the entire bowls uneaten. No apologies, no offer to exchange.
Excellent steak, nothing fancy but well prepared. Quick after work dinner.
Seems like when Jonathan is not on site since opening the second location, things are noticeably different in terms of what’s coming out of the kitchen...two recent visits, same impression.
We were disappointed, especially in comparison to our recent visit on Valentine’s Day. My wife’s pan seared redfish was very over cooked - almost burned on the skin side. My redfish special would have been a great dish but for the extreme heat. We shared a chocolate “mousse” that could have been matched by a box of Jello pudding.
Maybe the quality control in the kitchen was MIA at the Astros ALCS Championship game that night.
The service is always amazing. All meals were wonderful.
The only BYOB in Houston that's worth a darn. Try it!
The service was excellent, almost too attentive. The food was fantastic, I had forgotten about the huge portions, could have easily shared. Love great food and great service and the ability to bring wine from our cellar.
The unpleasant seafood smell that greeted us at the door should have been a reminder this will not go well. We each chose easy dishes and left universally disappointed. At these high prices a pleasing meal should be certain. Not even close. The BYOB option is the only unique offering but the $20 corkage is again way overpriced for the lame experience.
One of our neighborhood favorites. Food is always excellent. I had the broiled scallops and they were cooked perfectly.
We had an enjoyable evening, with our own wines and sharing several specialties of the house.
Friendly staff didn’t quite make up for the quality of the food. The restaurant came highly recommended but the vary basic, slightly shabby decor and mediocre food did not live up to the hype. Veal Marsala on a bed of angel hair pasta was drowned in the sauce but the mushrooms were quite good. The sea bass ($44) was mushy and had a dry coating on it — was supposed to have been pan seared. Chicken Parmesan was good as was the fried chicken and grits, garlic mashed potatoes had good flavor but too much skin and a bit gritty. Nice that it is BYOB w/ $20 corkage if you want to bring a nice wine. No complimentary bread, crackers or breadsticks, which is kind of chintzy when entrees range between $29 and $44. Wanted to support neighborhood business but overall disappointing meal.
We were disappointed with our meal quality. We shared the broiled snapper and found it a bit undercooked and the broccoli was almost too hard to cut apart....We have been coming here for a number of years and have come to take the great service and food for granted. We both felt let down a bit when we left.
This was the third time that I have been to the original Jonathan’s The Rub. Each time has been consistent: the food is above average, however the wait staff is unfriendly to the point of being sour, and the atmosphere is lacking due to the overcrowding of tables. Somehow the place is always packed so I keep giving it a try, thinking there’s something that I must be missing. But for me, service is a big factor in my enjoyment when dining out, and when the waitress failed to notify me that there was a $2 up charge for my choice of the Brussels sprouts as a side dish, it just cemented my decision to mark this restaurant off my list.
Awesome food, great service and value. Only downside is limited parking between 12:00 and 1:00 PM
