John's Grill Ratings and Reviews
We made a reservation 4 days before going to San Francisco. I was a bit concerned that it may be booked since we needed a reservation for 7 people on a Saturday in December, but we were able to get a table. I have not been to this restaurant before, but the reviews were good so we gave it a shot. We were pleased with our meals, the service and we didn't wait at all for our table. There were a few people waiting when we got there at 6:15 p.m. and a ton of people waiting when we left at 7:45 p.m. Glad we had a reservation. It is three stories tall, so there is plenty of seating.
Overall, the dining experience was nice. The halibut was a little overcooked and needed more salt, but the sauce complemented the fish nicely. The clam chowder as rich and very delicious, what I expected of San Francisco. I was happy to have a bit of steak with the soup. Wanted to mention a quick thing, one of the legs on the chair was broken, and felt very wobley and I felt like I could fall if I made the wrong move.
We have been coming to John's Grill for 9 years now. We come to SF a week or two before Christmas and stay overnight very year. We always have lunch at John's. The place is decked out with Christmas decorations and its always a great experience. Food and staff are amazing. A real SF experience. You feel all of the history the moment you walk in the door. Love it.
John's is always good. Our only negative experience was the homeless (and crazy) guy standing in the entrance vestibule on our way out. He asked for money. We ignored him. And then he continued to follow us out and stay very close to us. Two of John's employees were out on the sidewalk having a smoke, and they did nothing. They just watched as this crazy guy continued to glue himself to us. We kept changing direction, and the guy would stay with us. It finally took a young lady to come yell at him to get him to leave us alone. I understand that it is not the role of John's employees to do something like help us on their break, but it was very disconcerting.
Our meal at John's Grill was exceptional. My wife's halibut was so tender it melted in your mouth. My porterhouse was enormous and was cooked to perfection. Even though the restaurant was crowded, the service was superb! Our waiter was attentive, but not pushy.
Fun place to dine. Will go back again
