John's Grill has been a San Francisco tradition since 1908. We took a trip to SF for a Christmas gift to ourselves. I bantered between John’s and other local spots but ultimately settled with John’s, because we wanted to be in walking distance from the Marriott Marquis.
John’s met our expectations but didn’t exceed anything. The food was good. I had John’s Steak. My wife had the seafood cannelloni. Compared to other steakhouses in the area, the menu pricing is more conservative. It’s a crowded spot with lots of history. We got in just before our scheduled 6 pm reservation, and it’s a good thing we did. It filled up quickly afterward. The service was average. Don’t expect charisma in San Francisco.
You’ll easily spend $125 for two people at John’s including tip. That’s entrees and no alcohol, appetizer, or dessert.
Apparently a long time San Francisco establishment. Features steaks, seafood and some regular meals. My wife had Chicken Jerusalem and enjoyed it. I had Petrale Sole and suspect it may have been something else. It was served in a mushroom sauce which is far too heavy for a delicate fish.
For the past 15 years, family get together the Saturday before Christmas . We stay around the corner at the Hilton, shop Macy’s and all the upper end retailers, watch the ice skating in Union Square, then head over to John’s Grill for a fabulous steak dinner. Only four of us this year, but have had as many as twelve before, they accommodate them all. Excellent service whilst ya listin.to the live jazz music, service is outstanding making you feel so special and well taken care of. Steaks come out popping hot along with all the side dishes, sourdough bread kept full without asking while drinks and wine flow as needed. While the family outing is just before Christmas, we tend to do the same routine a few other times throughout the year,
Food was mediocre for the price. Was expecting a baked potato and got French fries. As the waiter was serving the food he stated that they were out of baked potatoes— it was 5:30.? Didn’t get a Chance to substitute anything for the potato just got served fries.
John's Grill is a San Francisco tradition (founded in 1906 or 7). I was disappointed in the food this trip. Ordered escargots and lamb chops. Escargots sauce was not traditional and I didn't feel it was very good at all. The lamb chops were good, but probably not fresh.
We made a reservation 4 days before going to San Francisco. I was a bit concerned that it may be booked since we needed a reservation for 7 people on a Saturday in December, but we were able to get a table. I have not been to this restaurant before, but the reviews were good so we gave it a shot. We were pleased with our meals, the service and we didn't wait at all for our table. There were a few people waiting when we got there at 6:15 p.m. and a ton of people waiting when we left at 7:45 p.m. Glad we had a reservation. It is three stories tall, so there is plenty of seating.
Overall, the dining experience was nice. The halibut was a little overcooked and needed more salt, but the sauce complemented the fish nicely. The clam chowder as rich and very delicious, what I expected of San Francisco. I was happy to have a bit of steak with the soup. Wanted to mention a quick thing, one of the legs on the chair was broken, and felt very wobley and I felt like I could fall if I made the wrong move.
We have been coming to John's Grill for 9 years now. We come to SF a week or two before Christmas and stay overnight very year. We always have lunch at John's. The place is decked out with Christmas decorations and its always a great experience. Food and staff are amazing. A real SF experience. You feel all of the history the moment you walk in the door. Love it.
