John's Grill Ratings and Reviews
Steak dinner with the Friday night crowd. Upstairs —overlooking Ellis Street! Could not believe how lucky we were to have this place!! The Caesar salad was superb! Bone-in New York steak was perfect! Even the baked potato tasted somehow better than ever, and as nothing one could duplicate at home....the time goes by so quickly here....did not want to leave.
We asked for a quiet table when we reserved. There is only one table like that in the whole restaurant and we did not get it. Very overcrowded and noisy. The waiter recommended the ribeye. It was very fat laden and looked like it had been tenderized. the baked potato was dried out. We will not eat there again
Loved the ambiance but my son's medium rare Porterhouse steak was raw on one end and well done on the other(tenderloin side) was asked if he wanted a fresh one but we didn't have time to wait for another one. For the price it should have been made right the first time.
I have eaten at John's Grill several times before, and had a good experience, but this time was disappointing. We made a 9:15 reservation on OpenTable. As soon as we were seated, the waiter said, "The kitchen is closing; I need your food order right now." In general, we felt rushed throughout the meal. If the restaurant can't accommodate a 9:15 seating, then don't offer that as an option on OpenTable. Also, both the salmon and the filet mignon we order were slightly overcooked.
We love to go to John's when we visit the city. Be sure to make a reservation and request the second floor seating. The clam chowder and prawn cocktail are to die for. Real sourdough and butter. The portions are generous. We split the porterhouse steak and it was still too much food. Will return to be sure!
Had to wait a little after our reservation time but hung out at the bar and were seated quickly. The place was packed and ever table feels crammed in. We were a party of 5 and hardly had a big enough table for all entrees and sides.
That said, steaks were very well done and the service was great all around. Great location (Union Square) and great experience. Would definitely recommend.
The history of being in business for 110 years says it all. They serve classic comfort food without the frills. Generous portions of high quality steaks and fresh fish. The porterhouse is big enough to share and it's a bargain . The halibut filet must be half a pound compared to two bite sizes you get elsewhere. The service is outstanding.
Had a great Anniversary dinner on a very busy night as a major convention was in town and John’s Grill was full and lively. Excellent service, seated immediately and served Comp Champaign for our celebration and had a wonderful meal. Waitress was prompt, attentive and friendly and added to the the occasion. Will return again when visiting San Fran!
Very loud and lively, we like that. Good entertainment. More or a steal place not really seafood place. We were the last to be seated so i got a lot less seafood in my cioppino, which was disappointing, but it is obvious the food is good otherwise. The server was good but again we got there late, but the way i feel is i should get same service and same quality if i am paying same price or dont seat me. Husbands dinner was great
My sister and I had a nice lunch here. The fish entree was very good (and very generous portions). We both had a glass of wine (good pour). They serve sourdough bread also, which was delicious. This is an old restaurant that Dashiell Hammett use to frequent. The service was very good. Would recommend it!
We were in the city for a concert and hadn't thought about dinner until that afternoon. I checked Open Table and saw the reviews for John's Grill. They were able to accommodate 6 of us for the time we needed. We were seated immediately and the service was fantastic. It was a perfect environment for six noisy ladies excited to be out. The wine was wonderful as was the food. We all split meals (which they actually did for us and served us our own plates) and the portions were big enough to make everyone happy. The atmosphere was fun and loud and high energy. Really fun for a group!
Have eaten at John’s Grill on 4 occasions mostly for dinner after going to the theater. My favorite meal is the chilean sea bass. John.s brand of wine, particularly their Cabernet, is excellent. The service is also really excellent and very attentive. Great place to eat and I highly recommend it
I heard about the steak and ordered a Steak Sandwich rare. Perfect! I did miss out on I forgot my leftovers, but my friends cheeseburger was as ordered and the fries were perfect - nice and crispy. The wait staff were polite and attentive. I did see about six other things I wanted to try, so I am planning on returning, although it is a bit far for lunch, I just need a slightly longer lunch hour. ahhh -- I love dining in The City.
If you want to take in the historic atmosphere, go there for a drink and leave. Don't bother with the food. The "Chef's Special Red Snapper" served with shrimp, Dungeness crab, mushrooms and lemon cream was awful. The shrimp was clearly frozen mini shrimps (the same mushy mini shrimps appeared on the house salad), the crab tasted canned and the sauce was a light gray paste. the vegetables were sparse and barely warm. The baked potato looked and tasted like it was on a steam table for hours and hours. The other dish ordered was the Grilled Red Snapper with lemon butter sauce. It did not appear to be grilled and came swimming in an ocean of butter sauce. The same vegetables and baked potato as the other dish and just as bad. This is not fine or even good dining. It was New Jersey diner food at three times the price. Will never recommend or return.
