Real food for real people. Steak and potatoes. Good service
Our last night in San Francisco, we wanted a special dinner. We had eaten at John’s earlier during our trip. Lobster bisque was wonderful. Two of us had the surf and turf - it was excellent! Steak was huge, shrimp delicious. The others had ribeye and NY steak. We all agreed it was the best meal of our trip. None of us had room for dessert. We will definitely go back to John’s on our next SF trip.
This place will never go out of style. It's 110 years old and has the coolest feeling . Lamb chops are delicious and plentiful. The service is great.
I'm a native Bay Area gal who lived and went to Collage in SF, worked up the street from this place,....and now live in Sonoma County. We were excited to check out the famous John's Grill!! We felt the place was everything we wanted, our server was attentive, our first two dishes, the Lobster Bisque was outstanding, house salad was perfect and John's wine by the bottle was smooth,...but, we shared one of the John's steaks, which was mostly tough and not edible. By the time the wait person checked in we had attempted to eat about 1/3, some bites good, a few perfect, but the rest was chewy and tough. Normally, one would send it back, but the timing was strange. At this point we were not hungry after all that time gone by. The waiter asked what we wanted him to do, which my husband replied, "That is up to the house to decide." We were not charged for our salad and bisque, but still charged for the steak and wine. It was uncomfortable. We paid, left a tip as if it were the full order, (after all it is not the server's fault for the chewy steak), but it is strange the way he was terse towards us towards the end.
It was great. Busy place. Food and service excellent
Amazing from start to finish... great wine.. stuffed @$100pp all in
Very solid old time place ala Sam's, Tadich.
Rib Eye is good; cooked as ordered. Probably choice NOT prime.
Sea Bass excellent; cooked to order portion so so for price..
$15 for call bourbon pretty steep for a old time no pretense place.
Service very good. Would come again
We had a reservation. Were seated promptly upon arrival. Waiter was knowledgeable.
Although it was incredible noisy on the 2nd floor, we enjoyed our diner at John's Grill. Food was very good, either was the service. Good location for eating fish, not for a in depth conversation.
Outstanding food! We were only on San Fran for 1 night and so glad we picked Johns Grill. The Filet Mignon was probably the nicest steak I’ve ever tasted. We had the cheesecake and pecan pie for dessert - unreal! And I even got my boyfriend to try escargot! Perfect date night spot.
As usual had a wonderful meal, as did all of our party. The food is very good, well worth the price. The ambience is outstanding and it's a great deal of fun to eat here. Also you can eat leisurely, make an evening of it without being rushed. Particularly want to mention the wait staff. They are friendly, professional, very understanding and patient with multiple questions and special requests. If you've never been to John's I urge you to try it.
Food was really good and fresh!
Great food! Love John's! We didn't have a good table; upstairs by the bar/kitchen but we made the best of it. Its hard to beat Johns!!!
Food was average at best. My husband and I both had steaks, not much flavor and no seasoning. Tables are close, which is ok if you enjoy listening to someone else's conversation. Service was good and to the point.
Very good food, service was excellent . Would highly recommend to anyone
very nice place for Easter dinner. the food was good, the service good, easy parking. lost my glasses there but they weren’t turned in 😢. this out a damper on the experience...
We were in SF after over a week of food and wine in the Bay Area and were heading out of SFO the next morning, looking for some comfort food for my birthday. Our server was friendly and knew the menu well, and we had a nice, cozy table. Our tweens were not treated like children or adults, which was great. Our steaks were very good (and I am from Omaha, where steaks are the ONLY good thing, other than corn on the cob). We live in Chicago and have access to lots of good food, but for comfort food, we were pretty happy with John's Grill, although a bit expensive. Would have been nice had they recognized my birthday, but we forgive and will go back next time we are in SF.
Amazing food. Great selection something for everybody. Fantastic drinks will definitely be back
Tasty lobster ravioli, steaks cooked to perfection. Reasonable prices for top quality. Very good service. Each level has its own landmark qualities.
Food was warm in temperature at best.
John's is our go-to place when we downtown.
The food is very good, consistent comfort food. The service has always been good when we've been there. The food is served quickly and they know how to cook a steak.
This place kinda felt dirty to me and run down. I get it's an older restaurant, but so is Tadich Grill, but Tadich is way nicer.
The food was great here! If you want a quieter environment I would recommend waiting for a table downstairs - we sat up stairs and it was pretty loud - the service was great and the live music was a plus
Great food and history. This little gem has a ton of atmosphere.
Kind of old school.
The steaks were tender and flavorful. Our waiter was such a gentlemen with a great personality.
Great all around experience. Lamb chops are over the top and plentiful. Service is professional . Reasonable prices. Gem of a building.
Love the service a little expensive.
Food is delicious Lunch prices reasonable. I’m extremely happy with my recent visits.
Be sure you go to John's Grill hungry because the portions are huge , fresh, high quality and steaks cooked to perfection. They are celebrating there 110th year in biz and you can see why. It's all about the food , ambiance and service being enjoyable.
The variety of food was great for accommodating the tastes of our bigger group.
We needed a quieter corner so we could discuss some business and that was easily handled.
Great food, great ambiance, great service.
Classic old time San Franciscan restaurant. Excellent steaks and wine list.
der Service war mäßig. Das Essen sehr schlecht. Wir hatten Rib-eye Steak und Muscheln. So schlecht haben wir schon lange nicht mehr gegessen.
Very classic. Large high quality portions . Professional service. Great landmark atmosphere. Nice mix of locals and visitors enjoying the 110 year old experience .
Our server was great, there just aren't enough of them. They're working too many tables and always in a hurry.
I’m only in San Francisco once or twice a year, but I never miss John’s Grill. It is history, ambiance, and wonderful food.
Classic old school dining at it's best.
Classic Steak and Seafood, all well done, they know how to surf and turf. Service is professional and experienced. In spite of large crowds, didn't feel rushed. Not for quiet dining as the place gets busy and the tables are fairly close together. Not for a "first date" if you wish to have a more intimate conversation. Overall met expectations.
My sister is not familiar with San Francisco. This was a perfect choice for a darn good meal and a lot of old San Francisco charm. The food is "old fashioned" but excellently prepared, The waiter was professional and efficient. We never felt rushed nor were we ignored. This place makes me fondly remember the "good old days".
Friendly service. Not too noisy. Great food. Enjoyed the seafood linguini, generous amount of seafood.
