We sat on the 3rd level. What a beautiful room. High ceilings , wall of windows, dark mahogany walls and amazing antique reiliefs. The delicious tender steaks were high quality and include sides so it ends up being a bargain. Excellent service. Immaculate clean for being 110 years old.
Excellent Valentine’s Day celebration!! Steaks were grilled to perfection.
Love this place! It’s so “City” and always maintains it’s quality in ambiance, food, and value. You can never go wrong here!
Definitely need reservations on weekends. Food is above average. Good for small business dinners.
Excellent Filet Mignon and Clam Chowder. Very good heirloom tomato Caprese salad.
Best lamb chops ever. Fantastic service . Reasonable wine list. Amazing setting. 110 years in business says it all.
Very old school place mainly for carnivores. There are some fish dishes, but you'd be hard pressed to find anything for vegetarians. Steaks are very well prepared (as are the fish dishes), and all come with really good baked potatoes. Just an old-fashioned steakhouse, with pictures on the wall of the celebrities who have eaten there since 1908.
Classic restaurant great experience not mind blown if but would go back again!
John's remains a San Francisco stalwart for reliably good food and a stiff drink. If you want a cultural glimpse of the City over the past 110 years, make a point of looking at the various photos on the walls (including some celebrities). As one of SF's oldest continually operating restaurants, I'm sure that many stories and romances have been nurtured there.
Since we almost never order steaks in restaurants, cannot comment on that. My fish was excellent, and cooked "gently" as I'd requested. It was an excellent meal at a reasonable price for what they delivered. Service was very attentive, but not overbearing.
I would guess that the crowd was probably 50% out-of-towners, as John's must be in every travel guide book (for a reason).
It's amazing how this place got so many 5 stars reviews. I guess if you like bland, simple and expensive food, then this is the place. We had their grilled red snapper, chef's snapper, and cioppino. Well, service was quick, that is all 5 main dishes were ready within 10-15min.
The food... All our snappers were full of bones, had pretty much no flavour (and this is chef's entrée), cioppino was 'ok', but had relatively little ingredients...
All in all, food was OK, but definitely not worth the price.
The place serves up good steaks at a reasonable price. My ribeye was done perfectly. Service was good. My main issue is that the tables are so close together, so it's cramped dining when the place is crowded.
Great service! Lamb chops and steaks were delicious. Good wine selection. Menu selection was limited- need a few more healthy choices and other options for sides and appetizers. Cocktails were just ok.
Classic, old-style steakhouse with good selection of seafood as well. Enjoyed the cocktails and reasonably-priced wine list.
Delicious old school dining; excellent service. Our waiter was a lot of fun; we discussed the show we were going to. He made good recommendations for food and wine.
We’ve been dining at this historic San Francisco iconic restaurant for nearly 30 years. It is a treasure and so close to Union Square. No one should miss the opportunity to experience this jewel in the crown of SF eateries...
Very good food at a classic, historic restaurant. The service was gelreat and the live misic was a nice touch.
I wouldn't recommend John's.
The food was pretty basic and flavorless.
My partner and I had two different steaks but both felt there was a lack of seasoning and both were bland.
The location and internal decoration offered so much more, but we were very disappointed by our choice.
Recommended by nearby hotel concierge. Not quite a 5-star but not far off!
My companion's salmon dinner was tasty. My steamed clams were small though plentiful , however they were over cooked and the broth wasn't flavorful. House wine was average. enjoyed the old photos and old San Francisco feel.
