John's Grill has been a San Francisco tradition since 1908. This historic restaurant is one of the city's oldest and most famous and is a favorite of celebrities who enjoy great steaks, expertly prepared fresh seafood with excellent service and a one of a kind atmosphere. John's Grill was a setting in author Dashiell Hammett, The Maltese Falcon. The restaurant has earned many tributes: it has been chosen as one of the 10 best by Esquire and featured in Gourmet Magazine.
Live jazz nightly in the upper level dining room.

Service was terrible. I had to get my own drink refill from the bar. Once food was dropped off, without removing the salad plates first, not one person came by to check on food or get refills. Turns out our server left for home half way thru meal, didn’t tell us or hand us over to another server. The place was empty too.

We love John’s, it’s classic San Francisco!! We return every time we are going to the theater or simply find ourselves in the general vicinity. Convenient location, clubby atmosphere and attentive staff all contribute to a stellar dining experience. Best cheesecake around!

We had a new york steak and it was average. With the steak comes a potato and vegetables but it is not possible to exchange to other sideorders with the same price on the menu. The night was very busy and we did not have other touchpoints with service than ordering and billing.

The ambiente was very nice though.

The restaurant is very cool. It is real San Francisco. Good food good choices and classic in every sense. A warm blanket on a cold day, a reassuring friend when times are tough. Made me miss living in this quirky, wonderful and beautiful city. Love the pictures, love the Dashiel Hammet. I would highly recommend this experience to anyone local or just visiting.

Four of us dined at John’s grill. The seafood was fresh and the Lobster bisque delicious. My filet mignon was cooked perfectly medium rare and was flavorful. Would highly recommend this San Francisco institution.

The food was average at best and the service matched. We were forced to sit on the first floor for our special occasion and it felt like we were eating in an Applebee's. My filet was great but nothing else matched the quality. You can definitely get more bang for your buck elsewhere. Sorry.

The family has a wonderful time celebrating my dads 18th birthday. #72!!! Food was great! Service was awesome too. #PAUL art all. We had a private area. Leap Year!!! Will return again. Can’t list everything we ordered, group too large. Steak was cooked well to my liking. French fries extra crunchy. Lychee Martini DELICIOUSNESS in a glass. I had to order another one. :-)

Great lunches, I went twice, here. Very reasonable prices and a very convenient location on the way to or from Moscone for a conference. Excellent service and the food was spot on. Salads were fresh and crisp and well portioned and prepared. A do over for sure!!

Nice people, good food , eating downstairs was so loud you could not hear your conversation. This impacted our dinner.

Nice place, nice waiter, excellent service. But we went when there was a conference on in town, which meant it was overcrowded and a little to noisy.

The food was very good, not great, but very good. Steaks were spot on and cooked as we all requested. They got mine just under medium rare which is what I wanted. Service was slow but friendly and tried to keep up. The poor bartender downstairs was overloaded. Took 15 minutes to get two drinks and then I waited 10 minutes for my check after our table was ready - and that was with a reservation. Granted it was all during a conference week and there were hundreds of people trying to get into restaurants and I was glad to get a reservation. Not a bad experience. Would probably be much better not during a conference.

My husband and I went to John’s Grill for lunch on my birthday. The service by our waiter and other support staff was excellent. My filet mignon was served rare when I had asked for it
