"Step back in time” at this circa-1908 Downtown “landmark”, where “solid steakhouse fare" and "strong drinks" draw “tourists and locals alike"; "one of the last old-style SF eateries", it’s also renowned as a "Dashiell Hammett hangout" (and a setting in The Maltese Falcon.)”

Delicious Jack Lalane salad and surf and turf. Steak was perfect! Our waiter Jack (I think) was very attentive. Brought me my martini which was filled to the brim and didn’t spill a drop. We had an amazing time. Thank you!
Exceptional steaks all around, my T-bone was fantastic.
Welcoming, warm, accommodating, delicious, stay as long as you like, consistently excellent food and service, we have been coming back for twenty years, and look forward to more.
One my favorite restaurants in the city. Loved coming here with my family during holiday time. Now my husband and I stop by when we have extra time on our way to the theater. Love the "old school" SF feel and the cocktails and food are consistently great.
They have pretty good food and great french bread. Service was a little slow and inattentive.
Old school restaurant (we loved the vibe).
Seafood, Lamb & Steaks were great.
Professional service and a nice wine list.
The jazz guitarist playing behind us was a nice touch. The John’s steak was an excellent cut. Highly recommended
Iconic San Francisco restaurant! It's classic San Francisco! The food is delicious . . . seafood, steak, fish and pasta . . . very fresh ingredients! The staff is friendly, attentive and pleasant! We received our meal in a timely manner! Looking forward to dining at John's Grill in the very near future!
It was our anniversary and they surprised us with glasses of champagne and dessert!!
It's a very tradition restaurant, which is what I like about it. The food is a bit heavy, some dishes are better than others, and the menu is not trying to be innovative, but overall, I always enjoy eating at John's.
I've been going to John's Grill for a decade. Yesterday's visit was to take two work colleagues to lunch and it was a success. One had the famous Jack LaLane salad, and the other the petrale sole. Both raved afterward. Me, although way too heavy for lunch, I couldn't pass up the John's Steak (bone-in New York). What was special was we are able to sit at the famous Booth #21, often occupied by local notables and true San Franciscans. Anyway, the service was great, the food great, and we really had a good time!
Introduced adult children to a fine dining experience. Had lamb chops again and wife loved cataloni.
It was good for 4 of us but cramp.
The steaks seem pricey, but that may be down to the poor sterling to dollar exchange rate. My ribeye was a little tough. The service was good.
Though I was late for the reservation time because we took too much time to get it , staffs welcomed us and took us to the table upstairs. We enjoyed nice cuisine and music. Thank you so much.
We were a group of 3 for dinner on a Friday night and glad we made a reservation as it was packed and kept getting busier throughout the evening. The host and hostess were very welcoming and our server was very nice. All the seafood; cioppino, oyster, steamed clams (wonderful wine/butter sauce) were exceptional. chicken jerusalem needed a little more flavor, but quality of the chicken was great. Fun ambiance - very energetic with a mix of locals and international diners.
You have to be open to the close quarters and noise, but the history, food, and staff make it all worth it. Still my favorite place to eat in San Francisco.
The service was very good, the steak was cooked perfect, the clams were very good but the salad had wilted old greens in it. That was the reason for the three star rating. They took it off the check but it was something we didn't expect.
Service was mediocre. The rib eye was just ok - frankly the one I make at home was better. Noisy - hard to have a conversation.
We read about this restaurant in Open Table and asked our concierge at hotel. Great experience and terrific food. It is crowded with a great vibe. Our waitress was terrific. I would go again.
A true old restaurant SF experience. Menu selections from an old era but todays prices.
A classic San Francisco restaurant and we went there for a family celebration. Food was great! Loved the old school vibe.
This was like stepping into a time machine where you can watch the history of San Francisco develop by seeing the pictures of everyone that has enjoyed this establishment throughout the last 100 years. The wait staff was terrific and we enjoyed some amazing seafood themed dishes. I would highly recommend and make sure you take a few minutes to check out the Maltese Falcon memorabilia/history.
A great lunch spot. Dinner not as recommended as lunch.
The fish was not very fresh. Beat thing was the sour dough 🥖!! Service was cold.
A visit back in time with great food
Food not worth the price!
Very nice old- school steakhouse good service and the best rib eye I have ever had
Food was very good and the ambiance was fitting. I would recommend this restaurant to friends.
Food was delicious and service was great!
I hadn't been to Johns for years, so happy one of our party suggested it. Wonderful food and better service. Such a fun place, thrilled it is as good as remembered. Will definitely return.
Awesome food, wine and service!!
Awesome as always. And a tremendous value.
It is quite small on the first two floors so if you're a big person you will find it very uncomfortable. Our party was bigger (5 people) and seated upstairs. The food was good but not remarkable for us, just a basic steakhouse. It was nice it was close to where we were staying so convenience won.
Great way to end the day after walking all over the city. They lamb chops were delicious. I would go back to eat it again.
Excellent meat, very well prepared. historic location with relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere. The waiter could have been a bit more friendly, but overall an excellent dining experience.
Love this place! Food so good! Service fantastic!
Dinner was great, great friendly staff cool room ( we were downstairs and didn't realize there was more floors and wondered where they were putting all the people coming through the door )....when we asked the host when we left he said, "Oh we send them straight to the kitchen "...I haven't laughed so hard what a great answer!!!! Only comment is that by looking at the pictures on your website we thought we were going to a "fancy, classy" restaurant and were somewhat surprised by the paper table cloth so it may mislead a bit. Had a great time and would definitely recommend to friends.
The place was packed, loud, and hot. That combination made enjoying any meal a challenge. The filet mignon was dry and lacked flavor; the NY steak was better. Overall value: too expensive for the experience and just OK fare.
This place is charming. They do good steak and drinks.
