About John's City Diner
By blending a bit of the old with the new, owner Shannon Gober has transformed this Downtown Birmingham landmark into John's City Diner. While the restaurant still maintains much of the charm from the past, the decor and menu have undergone a face-lift. The menu at John's City Diner features a wide range of flavors from Southern comfort food to Gastro Pub inspired dishes. We use only locally grown or Organic produce. Every meat that we use is hormone, GMO and antibiotic free such as Fudge Farms Family Pork, Springer Mountain Farms Chicken and Creekstone All Natural Beef. Our bar features 12 local craft beers on draft, 15 wines by the glass and hand crafted cocktails using the most honest ingredients available. As we like to say at John's, "Get Some".

John's City Diner Ratings and Reviews
Second time for us at this gem. We love the service, the food, and the attention to detail. This is not some fancy place but the food is kinda fancy and fun. Southern with a twist and classic favorites with flair. Awesome!
We had some friends meet us there for Valentine's dinner. The service was great, and the food was awesome! Everyone there is always nice, and very helpful too! We go to John's about 6-7 times a year, and we are never disappointed! We love the food, and it is one of our favorite places to go to!
Honestly, other than the Mac N Cheese and the White Chocolate Bread Pudding, which were good, our entrees were not very good at all.
Of our party of 10, all of who this was their first time, the prime rib and the pork chops were tough and full of griddle. There was no flavor to the Parmesan Encrusted Tilapia. It was all just very disappointing.
We visited John's before an event. The food and service were excellent. The homemade chips and blue cheese were amazing. The fact that John's serves locally sourced food was a giant plus. Please visit John's! The chicken and waffles are yummy (from a prior visit)!
This restaurant can hold its own against any of the trendy new spots popping up around town. Their unique twists on familiar dishes encourages even the most persnickety eaters to choose adventurously and will also delight the die hard foodies. My 74 year old mom and her best friend LOVED the pimento cheese and the chicken and waffles and I thoroughly enjoyed the flavorful, just-spicy-enough South Pacific chicken salad. And definitely get the Brass Monkey. Trust me.
We were traveling through Birmingham, AL on our way home to NC. I discovered John's City Diner online and was intrigued by the menu. We made a reservation for the evening of New Year's Eve. The restaurant was bustling; very friendly staff, we were seated expediently. The atmosphere was nice; a little on the noisy side, but it was packed and a holiday. Seating was comfortable and casual. Our waiter, James, was very attentive and enthusiastic about sharing the menu with us and he provided fantastic service. We were very pleasantly surprised by the creative menu. We had appetizers fancy bacon, which was out of this world and blue cheese chips, also amazing. The fancy bacon came atop some of the most flavorful, creamy grits I have ever tasted and the thick pieces of pork belly were the perfect crispness. What a pairing! The light crunchiness of the potatoes and delectable pungent, sharp, flavor of the Maytag blue was incredible on the blue cheese chips. The overall quality of the food was great and portion sizes were hearty. My husband and I ended up sharing the meatloaf, which was a caveman portion with crispy onions atop smashed potatoes with a yummy mushroom gravy and my son had the Cuban sandwich. Many years living in Miami and eating authentic cuban food, I never saw a Cuban made on pressed pita, but it worked! The flavors of the meat and pickles and sauce melded well and made for a very exciting combination. The food was very rich in flavor. These dishes are not for the faint of heart! We were very hungry after a day of driving, but still could not finish our meals. Dessert looked awesome as we peered at other tables, but there just wasn't room in our bellies! Go hungry and if you are a meat eater, this will be heavenly for you. I would definitely recommend John's City Diner and would happily return the next time I'm in Birmingham, AL.
Our experience was good. We had reservations and although a full house we were seated within 10 minutes of reservation. The service was good, the menu adequate and food tasty. My wife had macaroni and cheese with pulled pork and was very satisfied. My daughter had burger but was undercooked to her order, but she said it had good flavor even being too raw for her liking. I had fish and chips that was very nice.
I’d eat there again.
Everything was great until we got home and Open Table said that we didn’t show up for our reservation. I called the restaurant and was not treated well on the phone. We are regulars at the restaurant and had dinner there tonight for my birthday. It was heartbreaking to receive this treatment from staff that recognized us. Instead I received a lecture about how it was my fault for not properly identifying myself upon checking in — disappointing. No apology from John’s Diner.
This dining experience was wonderful. It was out first time to visit and our server was not only helpful with the menu but very enthusiastic about describing each dish. The original chicken and waffles was amazing. This is definitely a treasure in the downtown area. We will visit again and be sure to bring friends! Ask for CiCi she rocks!
John's City Diner really surprised me! The food and the service was great! The server recommended the pork chop, which I ended up getting and it was phenomenal. We also got the brussel sprouts for an appetizer, which I was skeptical Bc I do not like them at all! But needless to say we cleaned the plate! I would say they are reasonably priced. We each had two speciality bourbon drinks ($10 each), an pork chop entree ($18.50), and we split 2 appetizers all for about $50/person. I would definitely recommend this place to friends!
Lived up to the reviews and ratings. Food was southern comfort food with a perfect twist. Kids raves over the cheddar waffles with chicken. The apps - fried green tomatoes, and blue cheese chips - were excellent. All of our meals were great. Service was ideal.
We were in Birmingham for a few days and went to John's first because it was close to our hotel and the second time because the food was so good the first time. The Springer chicken was the best chicken my husband or I have ever eaten. The meatloaf, treehugger mac and cheese and the pork chop were also delicious. Both Cece and Jonathan, our servers, were friendly, helpful, and fun. Jonathan even googled the music that was playing when we asked him about it. Very casual. Mid range prices. Fish, chicken, beef entrees, sandwiches, salads and soup. Emphasis on local foods.
