Great food. The pita chips and pimento cheese were great.
The food was fabulous! Many dishes and small plates to select from with a different flair. Part comfort food and part edgy combinations. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal and the service was good! We look forward to going back to try other dishes!
Excellent place within walking distance of our hotel. One of the few restaurants open in the downtown area on Monday nights. Unique twist on southern staples. Three little pigs Mac and cheese was great to share and the brussel sprouts were delicious! Loved my shrimp and grits with sausage gravy! Will definitely go back next time I’m in Birmingham.
Loved it! Great, classic southern food served in a traditional diner atmosphere. Nice and casual but the food is exceptional.
What a great surprise! Great food and our server, Bliss, was the best. I can’t wait to go back.
Great food. Very enjoyable evening
Great service and excellent food.
The pork chop was excellent and the meatloaf was delightful
But best of all was our sever. She was new to waitressing but was charming helpful anode professional
Her name is Bliss and we highly recommend her
Visiting my daughter for mom’s weekend. We went for dinner with her roommate and her mom. We enjoyed our evening out.
Great atmosphere, food great with fair portion sizes
Comfort food that made you slow down and savor each and every bite. Amazing from appetizers to finish with dessert!
This is one of the best places in Birmingham for upscale but not fussy southern comfort food. Phyllis keeps a well stocked bar including liquor, local craft beer, and wine. The staff is always friendly, and the food comes hot. Wether you are visiting from out of town, taking a partner to lunch, or just do not feel like cooking, you cannot go wrong here!
Very friendly staff and the food was just perfect. Great to know that the Southern "Touch" has not left John's Legacy. I will definitively be back soon.
Springer mountain chicken is awesome, as is the chicken and waffles (ask for extra syrup). Service is great - they're there when you need them and not there when you don't. Overall great place and great value.
Delicious food! Great service.
The food was stellar. Three little pigs Mac n cheese is out of this world. The service was impeccable. Our table was ready and we were seated as soon as we arrived.
We went to John's city diner before a show at the BJCC. We had the pimento cheese appetizer and the pork chop and meatloaf for entrees. The pimento cheese was very good, but the chips it came with put it over the top as fantastic. They were fried pita chips that were crispy on the outside yet still soft and chewy on the inside. My wife liked the meatloaf but wasn't blown away. My pork chop was delicious, cooked well with a nice glaze. As it said on the menu, it had a large amount of fat on it, but the portion was still a perfect size.
Great food with large portions. I got the Cuban and it was very good. I could only eat half of it.
We were celebrating closing out a pre-marriage counseling with a couple. Excited to introduce them to John’s and the fancy bacon! Plus we love James! He’s our most favorite server here or anywhere!
Great food and service. Very crowded and noisy due to large number of children for Saturday evening. Not usual clientele of Johns. Need more vegetarian options. Will go again.
Scott tookexcellent care of us during our dinner. His recommendations for our first time were perfect. The pimento cheese is a must try and so was the bread pudding. The diner was an easy walk from the Hampton Inn. The walk was needed in the way back. We were full and happy!!
We wanted a downtown place to eat before going to a concert and this place was awesome. The food was fresh and tasted fantastic. Our waitress cc was the best. I would definitely recommend this place. It is casual but we were dressed up and didn't feel out of place.
I finally tried chicken and waffles ( original with bacon)!!! I am not sure why I waited so long. I gave my husband a bite and he is ordering the next time we come in. They were amazing! My husband thoroughly enjoyed the pecan crusted trout. The restaurant was quite lively. There were several adult birthday parties.
The food was great! We enjoyed this restaurant. We both had the baked chicken and the skillet corn. The chicken was so fresh! The skillet corn was the best ever. Make sure you make reservations for this one because I doubt you will get in otherwise. We will be back to this one for more!
The food was good but the service horrible. The server had an awful attitude and clearly did not want to wait on our large group, which ruined the experience in spite of the food. We usually eat here each time we come to Birmingham but no more.
It was great. Johns is a nice little gem in the heart of the magic city.
I haven't eaten here in a couple of years. Food was excellent & staff was friendly and attentive without being overbearing or obtrusive. We were a group of 4 and we all left knowing we'd plan to come back.
Strimp and grits were dry and awful. Five of were at the table and we were all sadly unhappy with food. Waiter was personable.
Whenever we come to Birmingham and have the opportunity it’s to eat out, we always return to Johns. I have been eating at Johns for over 30 years and even though the owners have changed hands over the years, the food has never waivered from excellent. Our server Laura Brooks Jackson was one of the best we have ever had. She made sure that we were comfortable, understood the menu and the specials, and she checked on us often. I brought 2 couples that had never eaten at Johns and everyone raves about how good the food was. There was not one problem with any of our experience or food which is hard to come by these days.
My grandson - now 18 - thinks John's has the best burger in town. And it is the best. It is hard to beat the flavor of fresh beef. He was doing technical direction at a play in the Alabama School of Fine Arts and we had an hour between the two showings to eat. The staff took excellent care of us. When I asked the grandson if he wanted me to take him to dinner between shows - John's was the only place he mentioned - along with I need some pimento cheese. We had the pimento cheese appetizer and he had pimento cheese and bacon on his burger. It's too bad that it's not quite walking distance from the school. We will be back when we are not in a hurry.
This was a great way to show clients a little bit of the spectacular Southern hospitality. We each tried very different things and all were delicious. The shrimp and grits were especially yummy. The grits were so creamy. We will go back again!
Second time for us at this gem. We love the service, the food, and the attention to detail. This is not some fancy place but the food is kinda fancy and fun. Southern with a twist and classic favorites with flair. Awesome!
Loved it. I would go there again. Good food .. atmosphere was quiet enough to talk
Food and Server were good
The hostess was rude and ruined the entire evening.
We had some friends meet us there for Valentine's dinner. The service was great, and the food was awesome! Everyone there is always nice, and very helpful too! We go to John's about 6-7 times a year, and we are never disappointed! We love the food, and it is one of our favorite places to go to!
Honestly, other than the Mac N Cheese and the White Chocolate Bread Pudding, which were good, our entrees were not very good at all.
Of our party of 10, all of who this was their first time, the prime rib and the pork chops were tough and full of griddle. There was no flavor to the Parmesan Encrusted Tilapia. It was all just very disappointing.
A regular spot for excellent food, quiet atmosphere (rare for an affordably priced restaurant in Birmingham), and excellent service.
The staff at John’s are as good as the food. We have been several times in the last couple of years and it never disappoints!!
The Brussels were excellent, the chicken and waffles were excellent, the porkchop was excellent and I highly recommend Jihn's for a nice dinner date.
