John's City Diner
Excellent food and service as always. However, even though we reserved a table for 5 in advance, we were placed in the back corner next to the kitchen door, which was distracting.
Excellent food. Great service. Been to John’s many times and have yet to have a bad meal or experience.
Food was ok. They serve greens with no cornbread. Who does that? Bread pudding is outstanding.
The food was really good I enjoyed the flavor the MAC was a little more runny than I like it. I usually like it creamier but the taste was impeccable. Service was amazing! I’d definitely come again!
John's always has great french fries, mac and cheese, fish & chips and happy hours specials. The baked chicken was a bit overcooked, but well spiced. They did a nice job on the gin, lavender salt and cherry cocktail. The server tried to up-sell a bit too often.
Very limited menu. If you don't eat pork this is not your spot. Server was not able to offer a viable option. She was very attentive,
Great comfort and Southern food in Birmingham.
Food was not tasty. Not enough veggie options.
Coffee was burnt
Service was good
Outstanding and friendly service in a beautifully appointed restaurant. Unfortunately I didn’t find the signature meat anything special. It was a bit dry for me, but I still plan to come back to this property and give something else a try.
John's City Diner is a Must when you are in B'Ham. Located in a part of the city that is developing rapidly. Pure Southern Comfort food. Be sure to try the White Chocolate Bread Pudding topped with candied pecans.
There was much to enjoy this trip. The in season brussel sprouts and the pimento cheese appetizers were wonderful. They also had a barrel of Woodford Reserve that may have been one of the best bourbons I’ve ever enjoyed. The ladies both enjoyed the crusted chicken and spinach, my pal got the fried chicken, and I had the meatloaf. All were very good, well-sized portions. The wait staff was timely and attentive throughout, better than some of the higher end restaurants we’ve visited of late. Appetizers, drinks, and a main course was under $75 for two. All and all, great experience with a sound comfort food menu.
Great place for an out of town business guest who wanted “southern food.” It’s approachable and upscale and there was someone for everyone. Great service and great atmosphere.
This is solid place not over the top fancy! But the food is very 4 star quality with the attention to the details in the flavor this place consistently catches the flavor of an upscale south dining experience! LOVE JOHN’S
Amazing food and much more than we expected! We are so glad we made the decision to book a table here!
Always excellent food and excellent service. Our server Logan is the best.
Good good and nice environment. Great service as well.
We had a reservation and was seated immediately. Our waitress Robin was very nice and made suggestions. My only issue is we waited almost an hour before we got our food!! There was a huge, huge, huge party in the back and it was the cause of the hold up I’m sure. Robin was super sweet and apologetic. She checked on us often and even removed the charge for the appetizers we ordered. All in all I would go again and seat in Robin’s section only ;-)
Great find in Birmingham!
I had eaten here several years ago and the food was delicious . Brought some friends and all said the food was very good. Will be on our list to visit again.
Over cooked and over salted pork chops. Pricey for the quality of food. The waitress was good, but new. I have been here 4 times with only 1 4-star experience. I don't think that we will be back and my wife tends to agree.
First time we have tried John's. Loved it and the atmosphere. Reasonable prices and good food. We'll definitely come back again.
It was a wonderful experience. Much more than expected. Food was suburb and service outstanding. Would give them an A++ rating!
We LOVE John's City Diner... everything about it! It's our 'go-to' dinner spot before concerts...The brussell sprouts are delish, and I stepped out of my comfort zone this time and ordered the 'fancy bacon' and it was oh so good! Everything we've ever tried has always been made to perfection and we've never been disappointed. The staff and service are always great. I highly recommend making a reservation If you're going to a concert as they fill up fast after 5:30 on event nights.
It was great and delicious! Our server was awesome! The wine was good and the food was super tasty!
My niece and I ate here before going to a concert. We weren’t super hungry so we split the hummus dip, which was excellent, and we each had a bowl of the mac and cheese, also very good.
I had the Cubano sandwich. The flavor was good, but it was pretty greasy, which I should have anticipated. The French fries were delicious. One of our party has a salad with chicken that looked delicious and she said it was. One of us had the fish and chips, which he enjoyed, and he agreed the fries were great. Service was excellent. We were having a business lunch and were able to hear each other just fine.
My husband and I came in Tuesday March 12th around 8:15 and experienced the rudest service ever . Our waiter was terrible , he was extremely rude to my husband luckily my husband didn't knock him across the room and he remained calm we didn't get to eat we just left . We will never come back
Great service. Ny strip special was fantastic
Interesting updated take on traditional Southern fare, pork chops, fried chicken, sweet potatoes, collard greens. Good food, good service, good atmosphere.
I took three friends with me to dinner - I had eaten at John's on two previous visits to the city. The food was amazing, and it was a top highlight of the trip. Two of us got the chicken and waffles. Amazing!! I'm a believer now. (I previously ate macaroni and cheese as I was carb loading for a half marathon, and it's incredible, too). The other two got the roasted chicken with cheese grits and they couldn't say enough about how yummy it was. The pimento and cheese appetizer was a winner, too. Our waitress was helpful and on top of things! We loved the evening, the atmosphere, and the food. Great job, John's!!
Food was fantastic and CeCe our server was wonderful and kind.
Great old-timey vibe but farm to table excellent meals. We both had meatloaf, portion huge, very well prepared and presented. I had white chocolate mousse, which was delicious but couldn't taste white chocolate, not surprised, very hard to bring out that flavor, easily overwhelmed by other stronger flavors.
Our waitress, Robyn, was delightful. Whole experience so good we went back the next night. I had house cocktail, no meal. Hubby had hamburger, meat ground on site, with gluten free bun. He said it was very good.
I made reservations, but we had to wait before a table could be cleaned and prepared for us.
The food was good, but the service was very slow. The waitress brought water, but no straws, and when we asked for straws, she said it would take awhile. It also took awhile for the server to bring the beer that I ordered.
It took awhile before the waitress returned for our order, and it took awhile to receive our order.
During the course of our meal, two different serves stopped by our booth to ask if we ordered a drink they had, but it was not us.
I don't blame the waitress. It appears they were understaffed because she was having to cover too many tables.
Overall a lovely evening! Just don’t get the potato chips in dressing! Awful dish! DO get the amazing chocolate bread pudding and the chicken and waffles is large enough to share!
Superb service and super-tasty food (amazing Brussels sprouts appetizer).
We loved the blue chips, and we were a ll well satisfied.
We will definitely go back. Food was very tasty and the server, Logan, was very warm and personable. It was not very busy so the food came out fast. The flash fried brussel sprouts are excellent!
Food overall very good. Service was friendly and did not push us to finish. Dessert was excellent. The peanut butter cream pie and red velvet sammiches were great.
