John's City Diner
Excellent. This our third visit to Joh's City Diner and our never disappointed. My wife loves the shrimp and grits. Come hungry for the delicious meatloaf. We will return again.
A lively environment, courteous and efficient staff, solid mixology. The hero was the food, though! Excellent!
Busy today. We were told that fresh okra was almost gone for the season, so we ate two!
Four for dinner. We ordered appetizers, cocktails, bottle of wine and entrees. In other words, LARGE tab. As our meals were brought to our table, my entree made it to the table, the other three were dropped on the floor. It happens. But there I sat, with my chicken and waffle for twenty five minutes waiting on the other three to be served. By the time their orders arrived, mine was cold. Other than a quick apology, no compensation was offered. Not even an offer to take off an appetizer. The food was very good, but customer service should be as important. We won’t be back anytime soon.
Excellent food and service as usual. Today I tried one of their barrel pick whiskeys. Wow. Their Woodford Reserve barrel is unbelievable. Can't wait to try the others
Food was really good. Atmosphere is diner, nothing more but food is good and drinks are good.
We love JCD, but this time was underwhelming. The main issue was that the portion had shrunk but the cost had not. I left feeling that my food was not worth the price that I paid.
All very good, food delicious as always. Service great. Bar offerings limited. Limited selection of wines, no sweet white, only dry. Margaritas bitter.
This was the second time we had eaten dinner here. The first time was wonderful, so we were excited to take family from out of town. We ordered our meals and then found they were all out of what we ordered. Reordered. Waited an hour and a half and then found out they had run out of a side. Embarrassed. Meals were average. Wish we had been able to get the grilled chicken. Fish and french fries were greasy.
We wont be back.
First time eating here, and I was very satisfied!! The chicken and waffles meal was HUGE, and delicious. The “standard” Mac and cheese was different (tangy with a hint of spiciness), but good. Will definitely visit again.
Good food and quick service for a business lunch.
Fish portion was three pieces now two breading was good fish was not great as it was, service was good, asked for table to view game was informed not available however during our dining experience table was never used!
Pretty cool place to relax and eat downtown Birmingham. A little challenge to find a place to park.
The food was very good but a little overpriced . Fish and Chips..$17.00...taste good but really a 10.00 meal.
Give it a visit in downtown Birmingham
It’s OK. I have no intentions on heading back there very soon. It was a Sunday night and I chose it by default. Not terribly disappointed
Pimento cheese app was delicious! Would definitely visit again.
I proposed to my girlfriend in front of the Its Nice to have you in Birmingham sign. The staff couldn’t have been nicer and they helped make this special day even better. Our waitress even got us a signed menu by the chef to commemorate this special evening. Johns is truly a gem.
We enjoyed our dinner especially the okra appetizer. It is an upscale diner with southern classics on the menus.
We grabbed dinner at JCD before going to a concert at the Lyric. The food is always superb. The pecan encrusted trout is fabulous. The pork belly was a great appetizer. Perfect place for dinner before a concert.
Perfect bday dinner with family. Great conversation, including one hearing challenged family member and noise level was perfect. The food was amazing!! Great service. We will be back more often for dinner as much as lunch. A Bham treasure!
Food was really good. Our only complaint was that our entree came out 2 minutes after our appetizer.
Janelle was our wait staff. She was fantastic. She was knowledgeable of the menu, attentive to our needs, and very nice. The food was fantastic. The fried okra appetizer was amazing. Great dining experience
It was great!
The delectable food was served swiftly in a lovely, friendly manner by Angie. Our group had a variety of entrees; all agreed that their selection was tasty and would order again.
We were going to a play and wanted to eat downtown!
Girls night out
Unexpected Michelin Star...
The Seoul wings were delicious. I enjoyed the herb roasted chicken.
Always a treat to eat here when I am in downtown Birmingham. The Meatloaf is a staple. Ketchup not required. Well trained staff. I will have to go back for dinner and try their new cocktail list.
House special meatloaf cold, dry, tasteless. Service cavalier. Good cocktail.
Good diner vibe; great food; outstanding, friendly service; as usual, great dining experience! Thanks!
The meatloaf was terrible. Served cold
Lovely food as always - the pork chop is so delicious, and the Seoul wings are worth the mess!
Our server Janelle was great, she really made the dining experience great. We had the fried green tomato appetizer, the pork chop, and the burger and they were all tasty. Thank you for an amazing dining experience.
There was nothing special about the restaurant or the food or the service.
Great food, great company. Very enjoyable experience. Cici is the best.
It was our last day visiting the area to find housing for our daughter and came upon John's when searching the internet for restaurants in the area. We wished we had found it the first night, because we would of gone back for several meals. The food and service was incredible.
We will definitely eat here again when we come back in August.
We just wanted to get some appetizers because we had a late lunch, but thank goodness our daughter ordered the chicken and waffle dish. It was the best, along with the appetizers we ordered.
Can't wait to visit again!
Awesome southern food and vibe.
We had reservations for 8 people and were seated quickly. Unfortunately 1/2 of us were seated under extremely hot lights (halogen?) in a lowered ceiling over upholstered bench. This made us uncomfortable for our entire stay.
Our server did a great job, we ordered several appetizers which were all very good, we liked the fancy bacon the least due to it being mostly fat, although the grits served with it were awesome. Our favorite appetizer was the pimento cheese and the wonderful fried pita triangles! We ordered the pork chop, chicken & waffles, pimento cheese burger, a seasoned roast chicken dish and Panko/pecan crusted fish for our entrees. All were a huge hit except the fish and it was a dud. My husband said it was over cooked and dry. The white choc bread pudding and the red velvet cake were great too!
When we walked in it took a few minutes before someone noticed us. I think we just missed a rush. When we sat our server Logan offered us a drink and made a suggestion on a vodka which was really good. He (Logan) was full of knowledge of the menu and the restaurant. Our food was sooo good. The pork rinds. Still cracking. Omg!!! Then we had “The Hangover” waffle. I was not suffering from a hangover but, when I do I will want to fly to Birmingham and have that waffle.
I was a great experience and Logan took it over the top! If we are ever in Birmingham again this will be the top place to visit.
Nice and vending out. Food and service outstanding
