I've lived in Royal Oak for over 4 years and this was the best first visit I've had to any restaurant downtown. The ambiance is phenomenal and the cocktails are very well done. I can only vouch for the Lobster "Pap & Cheese" and the salmon, but both meals were excellent. The crème brûlée is an absolute must-have for dessert. I will certainly be coming back.
Delicious food, accommodating staff, great ambiance.
This place is so cool to visit! Would be better if GF items could be available for food or at least labeled on the menu as some staff isn’t fully aware. Takes awhile to get service as well. However this place is super fun to visit and I recommend it a hundred percent!
Such an awesome place! The chef came out to chat with us. The drinks were amazing and the food was very yummy.
Can't wait to bring some other friends for the delightful experience.
Super cool place. Food was super hot and drinks were delicious.
They diffidently have the best drinks in Detroit! The service was great and the atmosphere is dark and fun.
Let me start off with the good... it’s a cool concept. You go in from the back door and you have to use a password they send u before your reservation time. A real speakeasy! I was so excited for the night. We walked downstairs, through the back of the kitchen and into the room. It was dark but cool. Service was great at first. Our server was real nice and friendly. We started off with 3 shots of tequila, 3 “snacks”, and a drink each (3) and then finished with another 3 shots of tequila. Prices on the menu were very reasonable. However this is where the bad came in..
Service was so slow! Our waitress never checked on us. We waited a while for our last round of shots and we finally had to tell another server to let ours know we were ready for the bill. We get the bill and we’re mind blown! $240 for 6 shots of tequila!!! They tell us our shots were $40 each! Those prices were NOT on the menu. The owner then came to us to explain we were given a deal because the shots should’ve been $45 each. Never in my life have I paid for a tequila shot over $20. Our server never mentioned the price to us. If she had, we would’ve never ordered them. The owner ended up taking care of the whole bill but now we’re so turned off and we’ll probably never go there again. It’s too bad. So if you go just be aware of shot prices and be prepared for very slow service!
absolutely worse food I've ever eaten. I don't know how a salad could be so salty but it was basically inedible. My husband said the steak was the worst piece of meat he has ever put in his mouth, dry and tasteless. The charcuterie plate was the same thing you could get at costco. Will never return. Cute idea, horrible execution.
Very disappointing. Loved our experience last time. The service was terrible this time. The food and drinks were good but everything took forever and the waitress could not have messed up our bill more. We attempted to fix it three times and ultimately the waitress charged the wrong tab to my card. We were so frustrated we qqjust chalked up our loss and left.
What an amazing restaurant. Every cocktail and food choice made turned out excellent. Expertly crafted, perfectly cooked, and a friendly staff to top it off. Will definitely be going back.
The service was very slow, particularly given that there were very few people in the restaurant at the time. The pasta was very undercooked (way more than al dente) and the shrimp mousse on the salmon tastes like a sponge. The drinks were good and the appetizer was good, but the rest of the experience left quite a lot to be desired.
We just came in for dessert and drinks with two other couples who had never been. The chef came to talk with us which we enjoyed. We love the cleverness of the cocktails and the desserts were outstanding. We had a super friendly waitress. Service was a bit slow but that’s okay....we will for sure be back
We loved it , especially appreciated “Johnny the chef “(would assume owner as well)coming tableside to check on us a few times. Very pleased to find it on this app. If you like a private , classy atmosphere to enjoy your company this is a great place for a date night. Highly recommend.
Went here with a group of four girlfriends. Ambiance is interesting; you enter through a backdoor using a password, and walk downstairs and through the back of a kitchen (it smelled strongly of fish). The bar itself is dimly lit and pumped full of too loud music. The cocktails are eclectic (no stuffed olives for dirty martinis if that’s your thing) and the food menu is limited and on the pricier side, with portions being small. We were there a total of three hours, which felt entirely too long. Food was fine, nothing particularly of note (we shared the charcuterie board, ravioli, lobster mac, short rib and impossible meatball). The chef came to our table to check in and we were offered free dessert, I’m assuming because of the length of our stay. Probably won’t go back but not the worst experience I’ve had. No idea why the service was so incredibly slow.
Great atmosphere, food, cocktails and music. Took 20 minutes to get our first round of cocktails, but did not seem too long considering the specialty nature of each. Definitely recommend and will be back.
The food is consistently excellent. The service is consistently slow to just bad. When Johnny is there things seem to run much better, and when he’s not, well, foggedaboutit.
This was a very cool place with great ambiance. The drinks were very well thought out, and bringing out a little appetizer and cocktail on the house when we first got seated was such a nice touch. The only thing to make this place better would be live music. Can't wait to go back!
Fun experience, good ambience. Food and drinks were great. Service was good. Music was a little loud to have a conversation, only negative. Would definitely visit again.
Johnny’s is an amazing addition to downtown Royal Oak! It is very unique and they went above and beyond creating an experience alongside amazing food and drinks. It is on the pricy side but it is a good value!
What a cool concept and fun experience. The food was excellent...seasoned perfectly. Service was perfect, the atmosphere was super cool...relaxed but at the same time had beautiful touches. Really enjoyed it...we had risotto (wow), steak tips (omg), and lamb (yum)...and then a delicious chocolate soufflé. Thank you for a great evening:)!
Drinks very good, food overall good. Johnny was there and checked on things frequently. Only negatives restaurant was almost empty when we arrived, not full 2+hours later. Didn't like hearing people walking around above us. Cool vibe. Hope they make it!
Very good place would definitely recommend
We had a fabulous time ! We will definitely return.
Simply delish! Excellent cocktails and food. Service was a little slow, but they did give us a dessert without our even mentioning the timing. The background music was loud, but the sound deadening in the place is amazing - so we could listen to the music and talk without issue. Neat trick! Will be back again and again. Thanks for a great evening!
Jorge was fantastic. Great conversation. Great drinks. Can't wait to go back.
It was the most amazing time my wife and I had
We will be back 10 fold for sure
Loved this experience. Service was great, drinks were unique and delish and the music was spot on for the ambiance. Will definitely be back!
Craft cocktails were perfect
The same guy who owns and operates Mr. B’s Gastropub is now running a speakeasy in the basement. The food is excellent, the ambience is fantastic, the drinks are strong, the service is good, and Johnny wanders around and chats with the customers. The music playing is old jazz and it’s a perfect energetic fit for the place. If you use the bathroom you’ll love the sound of the jazz music and customers that drift through the door. You might want to call first to find out how to get in to the place, including, where the unmarked door is in the alley behind the building. We had a wonderful time and immediately fell in love with this place! Thank you Johnny for doing a new restaurant in Royal Oak that’s upscale and fun.
Had the occasion to be in Royal Oak and saw the menu on OpenTable and decided to give it a try. The concept is a little out of the ordinary for RO. Food, atmosphere and service were really good. The chopped salad, deviled eggs and short ribs were our favorites. We didn’t order full entrees but will come back and do so. It’s a little gimmicky but it’s nice to be someplace that wasn’t over-run with hipsters, bros and the like. At 7 pm the bar was empty and only a few tables had diners. By the time we left the place was pretty busy! Worth checking out.
Great Atmosphere We will definitely come again we really enjoyed the evening.
Service was a bit slow, but it was still wonderful
Service was slow, small menu and food is only average
Went around 10 and took a half hour to get drinks, clearly need more bartenders. Waitress was nice and checked in often. A lot of the house cocktails have egg in them weirdly. Drinks were quite good when they came.
Maybe on another night, or just for a drink. Walking in, the place seemed amazing. Very neat set-up. However, the loud Jazz with very close proximity seating, mixed with constant creaking from those walking above the basement restaurant, made it uncomfortable (could have just been were we were sitting, but the creaking was brutal). The service this night was hopefully an anomaly, but was awful. We waited nearly an hour between ordering and getting our food. During this time, a separate table's waitress had to ask us if we needed anything, given we hadn't even had our appetizer plate removed or waters refilled. Then after ordering a drink with her and a water, the water was never replaced and they forgot our drink order, and no one came back to check on us. Finally the steak came out raw, and the waitress said "you ordered medium plus" to which I politely said, "I hate to do this, but look at it, it's purple." The chief acknowledged this, and did his best to make up for it with a free dessert and sincere apology. Deviled egg ap and drinks were amazing. One of the best smokey old fashions I've ever had. Salmon wasn't bad and steak when done right was pretty good. Service was still horrendous that night. Will try it again for a drink at the bar, probably not to eat.
It was very good. I love the concept. Not many places like this here locally in Detroit.
Server was a little underpowered with knowledge. Needs a little more training on fine liquor (which Johnnys has a lot of)
Overall better than Good but less than perfect. Will go again
My review is a bit biased based on our initial few minutes. This was a get-together with a friend that I hadn’t seen in a few months. It was the first snow storm of the year so I met her directly from work. We rang the doorbell, no one answered. Tried 2 more times. OH - I should mention we had reservations at 6:30 (early! for a Saturday night). No one ever responded. An employee of Mr B’s opened the back Door to take out trash ... that is how we entered. And yes, the “hostess” of Johnny’s was sitting there with her laptop open. I told her we had reservations and she announced “is it okay if I seat you at the bar?” Yes it was fine ... but why?? The restaurant was not busy (I think 2 parties of 2 were seated). Did they not want friends coming here? We were dressed nicely (which should not even matter). It was odd especially combined with her non-answer of the door (yes, we knew the password). Left us feeling miffed.
That being said, The bartenders were very friendly, made sure we tried some of their delicious cocktails and we had a pretty decent dinner (limited choices).
I would like to personally apologize for you entrance experience. Our hostess had a broken phone and didn't know it. The phone app alerts her to the doorbell being run. This is not our service standard and I deeply apologize. We will resolve this issue. Thank you for letting us know. Sincerely, Johnny
Amazing experience! Food was unreal and drinks were out of this world! The bar tender Jorge made me an amazing off the menu cocktail which was vodka passion fruit and egg whites! We had the opportunity to meet chef John who was extra kind and caring and passionate about his food! He makes his pasta fresh daily and let me tell you the noodles in the lobster Mac will blow u away. He also makes his own ravioli and it was amazing!! The dessert was out of this world mind blowing taste! The ambiance was exactly what I love low key, laid back, not loud, and secret! The host at the front was just the sweetest!! 100000% going back!!!
