Johnny's Half Shell - Adams Morgan
Book your next event with us
Have been to Johnny's many times. Generally I find the food quite good. On this visit, however, the quality was so-so. Didn't seem that the kitchen was trying very hard on a Tuesday night.
We were on time for our reservation, and they tell us that they gave our table to another couple that requested that specific table. We sat outside and the weather turned cold and breezy, so we ate and ran
Great food and friendly service. Raw oysters are delicious. Thank you
Fabulous..tasty soft shells like no other we’ve ever had.
Excellent customer service and great happy hour deals!
AMAZING food and service ❤️
We live nearby and it had been a while since we visited Johnny's Half Shell and we where reminded what a treasure it is. Service, quality of food and knowledge of options was top-notch, how refreshing. Everything was great, no complaints and will recommend to all our out-of-town guests for excellent seafood.
Always a great time and best soft shell crabs anywhere.
Amazing as always ❤️
Consistently outstanding. Johnny and Ann have a limited menu that allows them to focus on quality and consistency. The service is first rate, with Johnny personally attending to each diner. Good acoustics so normal conversations are easy. Our go-to place for almost every occasion.
We had another great meal at Johnny's on Saturday. It was nice to see a full restaurant. The food continues to be quite good. Our service during this particular visit was outstanding.....kudos to the staff.
This was our first time here. From what we saw on their website, we expected this to be a swanky place, but it was much more casual than we thought it would be. That wasn't a problem except for the fact that it turned out to be pricier than the atmosphere would have suggested. I had the soft shell crabs. They were delicious, with a very tasty, spicy sauce. On the other hand, the portion size was very disappointing (two smallish crustaceans). My wife had the rib-eye steak. It was flavorful and cooked to her specifications, but the meat was very tough. Lesson: If you're going to try this spot, understand that it is a seafood restaurant, and that if anyone in your party would prefer beef, it doesn't appear to be their thing. I'd say the value of the whole experience was fair to okay. It's possible we would give them another chance next time we're in D.C., but we would likely want to try out other options. If you do eat here, there is a great gelato store a few doors north, that I would recommend for dessert.
Really fun evening.
Great Patio and Bar - Nice food and Dog Friendly -
Went here for restaurant week, but didn’t order off the restaurant week menu because we didn’t like the options. Ordered off the normal menu and got drinks, several appetizers and the crab cake to split. When we got our check, we were disappointed to see a $15 splitting fee... considering we ordered several appetizers and it’s not like we were given separate plates or also there was no indication on the menu that there would be a splitting fee applied, this was very annoying. For $15 we could’ve gotten another dish....Not to mention, the portions were very small. The food was decent, but overall not satisfied with the experience. I wish we were given a warning about the splitting fee, considering there was no note on the menu like at other restaurants that charge splitting fees.
Great dining venue - fair prices. AWESOME FOOD. Owner came out to great us - which gives it a special touch
Service was very friendly and very competent. We were greeted and seated quickly with our reservation. Loved the mushroom tart.
Delicious food. Great service. Nice neighborhood feel.
Tasty seafood, wonderful upscale casual ambiance, good friends.
We've been wanting to go to this restaurant for years, but dealing with parking in Adams Morgan (our old neighborhood) seemed so daunting. However, Saturday in the summer and parking was not difficult to find- but not plentiful. The food was great and we will return. Between four of us, we shared a mixture of oysters and grilled octopus. The person who got the oysters said they were delicious and the rest of us loved the octopus on arugula with a light vinaigrette. Then, two of us ordered shrimp etouffee and two ordered sauteed soft shell crabs. Both were delicious. We ordered two sides of green beans (very good) and potatoes Anna, disappointing and greasy. We had a good white and two cocktails, also very good. We requested the cocktails not too sweet and the waitress passed on our request to the bartender, who made the concoctions just right! BTW, our waitress was great! We shared a dessert, which we enjoyed, but it wasn't memorable. GO! It's an excellent restaurant. The vibe and ambiance was casual, cool, and comfortable!
Oysters were smaller than expected but fresh and tasty. The Halibut was fantastic. Would definitely order again.
Everything was just okay, somewhat overpriced in relation to value/price paid ($330 for 3). Second bottle of Pinot Noir unavailable.
The food was excellent and the service friendly and well informed, but not intrusive. We were a party of 6 with varied needs and all were well satisfied.
A very pleasant experience--efficient and attentive service, excellent food, and, on the night I last dined there, a noise level encouraging conversation. The salad and crab dishes were very good and the dessert, blueberry crumble, superlative. I'll be back.
Great sauce on the soft shelled crabs.
Outstanding service and food made this an exceptionally enjoyable evening. Pace of delivery was excellent and allowed for a couple hours of talk around the table. Couldn't have been more happy with the entire experience.
This is our favorite place in AM. You can't beat the friendliness and the neighborhood feel. You always feel welcomed.
THis is a good restaurant but it was very busy, resulting in annoyingly high noise levels, and some delay/lack of attention in service although the waiter was nice
Love the location for watching the Adams Morgan parade. Love the restaurant for great food and friendly, professional servers. I've been there several times and enjoy it very much. the mushroom appetizer is delicious!
New favorite date night spot
This was my second time enjoying the ambiance at Johnny’s. My two complaints were that they wouldn’t substitute a side and they were not accommodating for splitting a check. The oysters were delicious, though the entrees were small and disappointing for the price. I’d probably go back because the seats on the patio are worth any complaint!
We are fortunate to have such a first rate restaurant in our neighborhood. The food is always well prepared with fresh high quality ingredients, the service excellent, and the atmosphere warm and welcoming. It’s the place we go for special occasions, when we want to treat family or friends, or just to enjoy a reliably good meal prepared and served by people who treat us and each other with care.
Very nice great happy hour !!
Dinner with family. Enjoyed the raw bar and soft shell crabs the most. Great service , local draft beers, nightly special. Nice ambience.
Fabulous and the oysters even in July were so fresh and delicious.
Such a welcoming place.
World class soft shell crabs!
My father and I had a lovely evening here. The service was attentive and responsive. Soft shell crabs were delicious. We will be back!
Shrimp etoufee was quite good. My only complaint is they don't serve bread and I wanted to sop up every bit of the sauce. My wife had the softshell crabs and was pleased as well. We didn't try any appetizers although the potato hocks sounded amazing. We may go back in a Wednesday when they offer a special prix fix on a bunch of appetizers.
Lovely food, fresh and delicious. Wait staff very attentive and know their product when asked questions. Overall a wonderful dining experience.
