Johnny's Half Shell - Adams Morgan

The food was fantastic, along with the drinks! Our waitress, Nancy, was phenomenal and truly added to our dining experience! She went above and beyond. We will certainly be back!
Very welcoming and accomodafing. Food was fresh, delicious and reasonably priced. We loved the special cocktzils and wine. In all, a delightful experience. We were a party of 4 friends. All said they will come again to Johnny's.
Good restaurant with tasty food. Our section had the owners in it with a large group so our waiter was a bit overextended. He was fairly attentive but I noticed that the table next to us got a complete rundown of the menu, complete with descriptions of the cooking style, spice level, etc. (this was before the owners were seated). Once my party was complete we got no such service; we had to ask specific questions about the items we were interested in. Not a big deal, but something I noticed because I was the first to arrive so I got to observe the service others received. The food was very good; I had the grilled calamari and the grouper. Delicious, flavorful with balanced aromatics and decent sizes - not ginormous portions but certainly enough to fill you up. Overall a very pleasant dining experience, and one of the owners stopped by to check on us even though he was obviously there as a customer that night (November 9th).
Johnny's Half Shell is a great looking restaurant. The food is delicious -- every dish we had was perfectly prepared. The fried rabbit appetizer was insanely good. Even the grace notes were wonderful: spoon bread laced with kale, perfectly crisped fries, and an exceptionally good lemon chess pie. The service is friendly and efficient and even generous (our server poured a health dollop of two wines to help with a wine-by-the-glass decision). But it's expensive. Especially the drinks -- the lowest priced wine on the list is $50. Hard to make a place a regular stop if dinner for two is consistently $200.
I went early for a seafood dinner. I was in the right place. The oysters were perfect, as was the shrimp etoufee. The restaurant was quiet at the early part of service, and remained tolerable as my time there wrapped up. I really liked the retro style ambiance. Background music set the tone well. Service, by Nancy, was attentive and respectful. I've added Johnny's to my list of recommended DC spots.
Johnny’s Half Shell continues to be tops in food , service , decor and fun. We enjoy returning and being greeted by Johnny. The menu is terrific . Can’t say even good things about it.
Great fries. Fried oysters good. Could actually hear each other!
It was our first time in the DC area and we totally enjoyed our experience and meal especially at Johnny’s Half Shell - Adam Morgan. Our waiter, Ian, was so knowledgeable about the wines and made great suggestions. We would definitely recommend Johnny’s Half Shell to a friend.
Johnny’s has become our go to place for a great meal because they always deliver great food, service, and atmosphere. You may find more precious presentations, but you won’t find better dining.
Our dinners were great, as always. Dining room was busy, but we weren't encouraged to leave after our coffees and dessert. All in all, still one of our favorites. (We didn't get a table greeting from Johnny, as we have in the past, but it was a busy night.)
I know I am the one that ordered steamed halibut but I expected something more than just steamed fish with broccoli. It was the type of dinner that you make when you are on a really strict diet not when you are dining out.
I want to support restaurants in my neighborhood but I also don’t like craving pizza after I leave them.
Always delicious! Service is terrific. Great oyster choices.
Best fried oysters I've had in a long time. The breading was crispy and tasty. Nice and salty too. Delicious crab creaks with no filler! Was disappointed that they had run our of the the salt crusted cobi (and it wasn't late in the evening either) as the other fish dish looked very dull (steamed halibut), so I went with two appetizers instead for my dinner. The kale, apple, walnut salad was really nice. nice kids menu. Only bad feedback was that our server was a little too busy- never came back to offer us another round of drinks and we never got bread and butter at our table (and our kids were hungry). However, she was super friendly and we really enjoyed chatting with her after our meal when things had slowed down for her later in the evening.
Have been to Johnny's many times. Generally I find the food quite good. On this visit, however, the quality was so-so. Didn't seem that the kitchen was trying very hard on a Tuesday night.
We were on time for our reservation, and they tell us that they gave our table to another couple that requested that specific table. We sat outside and the weather turned cold and breezy, so we ate and ran
Great food and friendly service. Raw oysters are delicious. Thank you
Fabulous..tasty soft shells like no other we’ve ever had.
Excellent customer service and great happy hour deals!
AMAZING food and service ❤️
We live nearby and it had been a while since we visited Johnny's Half Shell and we where reminded what a treasure it is. Service, quality of food and knowledge of options was top-notch, how refreshing. Everything was great, no complaints and will recommend to all our out-of-town guests for excellent seafood.
Always a great time and best soft shell crabs anywhere.
Amazing as always ❤️
Consistently outstanding. Johnny and Ann have a limited menu that allows them to focus on quality and consistency. The service is first rate, with Johnny personally attending to each diner. Good acoustics so normal conversations are easy. Our go-to place for almost every occasion.
We had another great meal at Johnny's on Saturday. It was nice to see a full restaurant. The food continues to be quite good. Our service during this particular visit was outstanding.....kudos to the staff.
This was our first time here. From what we saw on their website, we expected this to be a swanky place, but it was much more casual than we thought it would be. That wasn't a problem except for the fact that it turned out to be pricier than the atmosphere would have suggested. I had the soft shell crabs. They were delicious, with a very tasty, spicy sauce. On the other hand, the portion size was very disappointing (two smallish crustaceans). My wife had the rib-eye steak. It was flavorful and cooked to her specifications, but the meat was very tough. Lesson: If you're going to try this spot, understand that it is a seafood restaurant, and that if anyone in your party would prefer beef, it doesn't appear to be their thing. I'd say the value of the whole experience was fair to okay. It's possible we would give them another chance next time we're in D.C., but we would likely want to try out other options. If you do eat here, there is a great gelato store a few doors north, that I would recommend for dessert.
Really fun evening.
Great Patio and Bar - Nice food and Dog Friendly -
Went here for restaurant week, but didn’t order off the restaurant week menu because we didn’t like the options. Ordered off the normal menu and got drinks, several appetizers and the crab cake to split. When we got our check, we were disappointed to see a $15 splitting fee... considering we ordered several appetizers and it’s not like we were given separate plates or also there was no indication on the menu that there would be a splitting fee applied, this was very annoying. For $15 we could’ve gotten another dish....Not to mention, the portions were very small. The food was decent, but overall not satisfied with the experience. I wish we were given a warning about the splitting fee, considering there was no note on the menu like at other restaurants that charge splitting fees.
Great dining venue - fair prices. AWESOME FOOD. Owner came out to great us - which gives it a special touch
Service was very friendly and very competent. We were greeted and seated quickly with our reservation. Loved the mushroom tart.
Delicious food. Great service. Nice neighborhood feel.
Tasty seafood, wonderful upscale casual ambiance, good friends.
We've been wanting to go to this restaurant for years, but dealing with parking in Adams Morgan (our old neighborhood) seemed so daunting. However, Saturday in the summer and parking was not difficult to find- but not plentiful. The food was great and we will return. Between four of us, we shared a mixture of oysters and grilled octopus. The person who got the oysters said they were delicious and the rest of us loved the octopus on arugula with a light vinaigrette. Then, two of us ordered shrimp etouffee and two ordered sauteed soft shell crabs. Both were delicious. We ordered two sides of green beans (very good) and potatoes Anna, disappointing and greasy. We had a good white and two cocktails, also very good. We requested the cocktails not too sweet and the waitress passed on our request to the bartender, who made the concoctions just right! BTW, our waitress was great! We shared a dessert, which we enjoyed, but it wasn't memorable. GO! It's an excellent restaurant. The vibe and ambiance was casual, cool, and comfortable!
Oysters were smaller than expected but fresh and tasty. The Halibut was fantastic. Would definitely order again.
Everything was just okay, somewhat overpriced in relation to value/price paid ($330 for 3). Second bottle of Pinot Noir unavailable.
The food was excellent and the service friendly and well informed, but not intrusive. We were a party of 6 with varied needs and all were well satisfied.
A very pleasant experience--efficient and attentive service, excellent food, and, on the night I last dined there, a noise level encouraging conversation. The salad and crab dishes were very good and the dessert, blueberry crumble, superlative. I'll be back.
Great sauce on the soft shelled crabs.
Outstanding service and food made this an exceptionally enjoyable evening. Pace of delivery was excellent and allowed for a couple hours of talk around the table. Couldn't have been more happy with the entire experience.
This is our favorite place in AM. You can't beat the friendliness and the neighborhood feel. You always feel welcomed.
