First-rate service from start to finish, great food, great drinks, kids loved it too. We absolutely love this restaurant! Can't wait to return.
We went to celebrate a birthday. Our waitress was amazing and made the night really fun. I’m sorry I don’t remember her name.
It was so delicious. Went for restaurant week. Was my first time. I loved everything I tasted and the service was so welcoming.
Perfect blend of Cashions and the old Johnny's. It's wonderful.
We had the duck and the breaded salmon filets. Both were excellent.
Restaurant menu was delicious. A terrific value. We would definitely recommend.
Love this place. Everyone should try it. Never had a bad dish here.
Fabulous restaurant! Superb cooking, wonderfully attentive and hyper-friendly staff, great ambience including fantastic musical selections. Fairly expensive but well worth it. Seafood and shellfish especially recommended (not for nothing the restaurant's name).
I ate here several times in the past when it was Cashion's Eat Place, which the sign reminds me. Everything was as delicious as always. We had fried oysters which were tasty; nice and crispy. I had the lobster, delicious, as was the accompanying spoonbread. My companions had the crab cakes which they enjoyed. We ordered Potatoes Anna for the table which were also excellent.
I had a nice glass of chardonnay with my dinner. My stepson had a beer and my husband enjoyed his mineral water.
(Note: No bread was brought to the table and we did not request any. Also, no special coffees are available so we were a bit disappointed, so we decided to skip dessert and coffee, opting for gelato next door. The tab for three of us, with drinks and tip came to $200. A good value. The music was pleasant and not too loud. It was a great evening.
A neighborhood gem. Best gumbo I’ve had in years. Service five star
Growing up in Massachusetts and spending summers on The Cape, my bar for seafood is set high. Johnny's got over it easily. Our table ordered oysters three ways, crab cakes and their lobster - for moi. Oysters - delicious, crab cakes - delicious, and my lobster could have been something I could have trapped myself off Menemsha - tender, juicy and gone too soon. Johnny's definately made it to my 'return to' list.
Food could’ve been better. Crab cakes had shells in it. Scallops could’ve been seared a bit more. Everything else was great. Loved the oysters!
This was our first visit back to Johnny's since they moved back to their original location in the Adams Morgan area. We were not disappointed, and in fact, we actually liked the ambience and vibe of the 'new old' place almost better than when they were over by Capitol Hill. We enjoyed an appetizer of the BBQ shrimp and grits, which were spicy and just enough to whet your appetite. We then each had the crabcake dinner - huge jumbo lump crabcake with fries and slaw. I'm not a huge cole slaw fan, but something about Johnny's special slaw makes me want an entire bowl. I asked for the recipe a number of years ago but never tried making it at home. So good... We had dessert - I opted for the awesome chocolate angel food cake with caramel sauce and my husband had the apple tart. Our server was a very pleasant woman, gave us a little history of the restaurant and having moved back to it's original location. The restaurant itself was a bit noisy but not in an obtrusive way. Would definitely plan on coming back when we're in DC next year.
Indubitably excellent food and service with generally fair prices and decent portions except for the brussel sprouts.
Had a great time as always. Food was superb especially the oysters and grilled calamari.
Went there for the first time and really enjoyed our meal. Will come back again. Great crab cake and pork shnitzel.
I have been a customer since the Cashion's Eat Place days and love the food prepared and/or supervised by chef Ann Cashion. Johnny is also a superb host and I always enjoy saying hello to him. Additionally the staff is the best as is the food!! The scallops were cooked to perfection as always!!
Consistently great food, service and ambience! A neighborhood favorite.
We had a wonderful time. Service was a little slow at first; perhaps extra crowded for a Monday night. We were rewarded for our patience. Delicious perfect food and lovely conscientious wait staff.
Our party of six included oyster lovers who really liked the fresh oysters on the half shell. We also loved the crab imperial appetizer but most other entree items were unremarkable. Not sure we have reason to return and waitress was often not around which didn’t help the experience.
Food is delicious, service was great. Quiet restaurant.
Wonderful as always. Kudos to John, Ann and their amazing staff!!
As soon as my party was seated, The Johnny welcomed us personally. Our waiter was amazing. He recommended dishes we loved and made us feel like family. Food and drink made the night perfect.
Excellent on all fronts...as usual.
Terrific restaurant, terrific food, superb service.
The food was fantastic, along with the drinks! Our waitress, Nancy, was phenomenal and truly added to our dining experience! She went above and beyond. We will certainly be back!
Great food, diverse menu, wonderful service
Very welcoming and accomodafing. Food was fresh, delicious and reasonably priced. We loved the special cocktzils and wine. In all, a delightful experience. We were a party of 4 friends. All said they will come again to Johnny's.
Good restaurant with tasty food. Our section had the owners in it with a large group so our waiter was a bit overextended. He was fairly attentive but I noticed that the table next to us got a complete rundown of the menu, complete with descriptions of the cooking style, spice level, etc. (this was before the owners were seated). Once my party was complete we got no such service; we had to ask specific questions about the items we were interested in. Not a big deal, but something I noticed because I was the first to arrive so I got to observe the service others received. The food was very good; I had the grilled calamari and the grouper. Delicious, flavorful with balanced aromatics and decent sizes - not ginormous portions but certainly enough to fill you up. Overall a very pleasant dining experience, and one of the owners stopped by to check on us even though he was obviously there as a customer that night (November 9th).
Johnny's Half Shell is a great looking restaurant. The food is delicious -- every dish we had was perfectly prepared. The fried rabbit appetizer was insanely good. Even the grace notes were wonderful: spoon bread laced with kale, perfectly crisped fries, and an exceptionally good lemon chess pie. The service is friendly and efficient and even generous (our server poured a health dollop of two wines to help with a wine-by-the-glass decision). But it's expensive. Especially the drinks -- the lowest priced wine on the list is $50. Hard to make a place a regular stop if dinner for two is consistently $200.
I went early for a seafood dinner. I was in the right place. The oysters were perfect, as was the shrimp etoufee. The restaurant was quiet at the early part of service, and remained tolerable as my time there wrapped up. I really liked the retro style ambiance. Background music set the tone well. Service, by Nancy, was attentive and respectful. I've added Johnny's to my list of recommended DC spots.
Johnny’s Half Shell continues to be tops in food , service , decor and fun. We enjoy returning and being greeted by Johnny. The menu is terrific . Can’t say even good things about it.
Great fries. Fried oysters good. Could actually hear each other!
It was our first time in the DC area and we totally enjoyed our experience and meal especially at Johnny’s Half Shell - Adam Morgan. Our waiter, Ian, was so knowledgeable about the wines and made great suggestions. We would definitely recommend Johnny’s Half Shell to a friend.
Johnny’s has become our go to place for a great meal because they always deliver great food, service, and atmosphere. You may find more precious presentations, but you won’t find better dining.
Our dinners were great, as always. Dining room was busy, but we weren't encouraged to leave after our coffees and dessert. All in all, still one of our favorites. (We didn't get a table greeting from Johnny, as we have in the past, but it was a busy night.)
I know I am the one that ordered steamed halibut but I expected something more than just steamed fish with broccoli. It was the type of dinner that you make when you are on a really strict diet not when you are dining out.
I want to support restaurants in my neighborhood but I also don’t like craving pizza after I leave them.
Always delicious! Service is terrific. Great oyster choices.
Best fried oysters I've had in a long time. The breading was crispy and tasty. Nice and salty too. Delicious crab creaks with no filler! Was disappointed that they had run our of the the salt crusted cobi (and it wasn't late in the evening either) as the other fish dish looked very dull (steamed halibut), so I went with two appetizers instead for my dinner. The kale, apple, walnut salad was really nice. nice kids menu. Only bad feedback was that our server was a little too busy- never came back to offer us another round of drinks and we never got bread and butter at our table (and our kids were hungry). However, she was super friendly and we really enjoyed chatting with her after our meal when things had slowed down for her later in the evening.
Have been to Johnny's many times. Generally I find the food quite good. On this visit, however, the quality was so-so. Didn't seem that the kitchen was trying very hard on a Tuesday night.
