Johnnie's Jazz Bar and Grille
Ambiance - amazing, live jazz music, fireplace, great story
Wait staff - so so... I expect more from a restaurant that has higher prices. Our waiting didn’t say his name, never filled water, did not have suggestions for drinks unless it was what he liked
Food - ok at best, every bit of food we had must have sat under a heat lamp for an extended time as it all had that heat lamp ‘crust’. My wife’s burger was tasty and so was my meatloaf but my sides were less than average: risotto was cold to the touch and Brussels sprouts tasted like vinegar... I didn’t eat more than the first bite of either.
I really wanted Johnnies to shine - it’s a great locale and liberty is filled with lack luster restaurants. Johnnies has the opportunity to set itself apart but the most important parts of the evening for a place that charges 12+ per drink and 20+ for a burger has to have more value... I’m willing to pay a premium for a premium evening. Johnnies service was the same as a chain bar and grill and their food was really lack luster. Johnnies, please take this to heart. I want this place to be amazing.
The food was unexpectedly mediocre
The kitchen did not serve appropriately. eg salad brought out with entree
Waiter was nice and attentive
Why ask if special occasion on reservation if you are not going to acknowledge
This was our 1st time to restaurant for our 43 rd wedding anniversary. We were disappointed.
Very good food and nice service. I’d like the old retro movie house look.
Wow! What a hidden gem in the greater Kansas City area. Who needs 18th and Vine when you can enjoy fantastic jazz with great food and even better service! The drinks were creative and flavorful. The wings and Southwest eggrolls and mushrooms are my favorites. There is even dancing if you choose to be daring and do so. I tried it out with a couple of my friends but will be back with my husband for date night. This is the perfect place for a celebration!
We had an amazing experience. Friendly and knowledgable staff with great entertainment.
Came to listen to some jazz and the band never showed up.
Decent food decent service best part was live music
Went on a Sunday expecting a quiet, perhaps jazzy atmosphere. If I had wanted to watch the Chiefs game on the big screen, I would have gone to a sports bar. So that was a letdown. There was hardly anyone else there on a 12:30 Sunday afternoon, but our waiter was not that attentive. The food was like my last visit, some good, some questionable. Of the food served our table, there was a lot of variance. The omelet was quite good, the biscuits and gravy was cold and congealed like it had been made first and then sat somewhere (not under a heat lamp) while the rest of the meal was prepared. My daughters streak was overcooked, but she didn't want to complain. The oddest things was my pancakes. They came out with whipped cream and a couple of marchino cherries on top. When I was able to flag down the waiter, I pointed out that the pancakes were supposed to come with strawberries, not cherries. He said, and I quote "those aren't cherries". Kind of flabergasted, I just looked down at my plate and said "well, they're not strawberries!". After he just stood there, I asked for the menu to confirm what was supposed to be on top. Then when I pointed out "strawberries and candied cashews" on the menu, he told me that was a different item! I pointed out that they were the only pancakes on the menu and that was what I had ordered, and then he told me that the menu had been changed recently and not yet updated! At that point, I just asked if he could bring out some strawberries and cashews, which he did, but after quite a wait. It really was just sort of a bizarre interaction. With the inconsistency in the food and the odd wait staff, I'm not sure if I'll be back.
The place was welcoming and service was good. Lonnie McFadden was excellent entertainment!!
I ordered the salmon with asparagus risotto and onion rings. The onion rings were great. The salmon had a very strong fish taste and the risotto was horrible. Next time, I'll stick with just the bar-type food.
First time. Enjoyed the atmosphere; service was exemplary and the music was terrific. My wife’s entree was very good, but of her two sides, one was badly under seasoned and the other was cold.
Second visit. Music great, restaurant to small to handle the volume of band. Very difficult to visit with our invited guests. Food good, service good but could tell staff overloaded.
My husband thought the Lobster Tail was a little tough, but over all everything was excellent.
Service was wonderful.
Good selection of wine and bourbon.
Food was cooked to our liking.
Live entertainment was pleasurable.
We will be back
Food was really good but it was just a little weird that the restaurant is attached to a movie theater.
I reserved a table for a group of ladies. All enjoyed their meal, the environment was quiet and comfortable. The service was extraordinary. Will definitely return.
We visited during the Lori Tucker trio performance. We started out on the deck and it was lovely. The only thing is that the music pumped out from the movie theater speakers in the parking lot can be heard on the patio. The patio did have speakers so it would have been nice to have the music being played inside streamed thru those speakers. We ordered the southwest eggrolls as an appetizer and they were tasty. We both ordered the Truman drink and both of us ended up getting two more for the duration of our visit...they were delicious. For Mains, I ordered the blackened steak salad and my partner had the blueberry salad with chicken. His was good, mine was terrible. The steak wasn't blackened and the pieces were full of fat. I had ordered oil and vinegar on the side but the leaves were definitely soaked with something before it got to me because they were mushy. Our waitress noticed right away that my meal wasn't satisfactory and was on top of it. She removed it from our bill and I ordered another plate of the southwest egg rolls. The band was very good and the crowd and atmosphere was excellent. We would definitely go back and perhaps just do appetizers instead of a full meal.
The music was great. It’s attached to a movie theater with live Jazz and televisions on the wall. It’s an eclectic atmosphere. Not a bad experience, but not sure what to make of it.
Our first time at Johnnie's Jazz Bar and Grille. Interestingly enough, we reserved a table through Open Table. Johnnie's called me about 2 hours before the reserved time to advise they were limited in menu items as natural gas service was interrupted due to a nearby construction incident. They asked whether or not we still wanted to keep our reserved table. We kept the reserved table - and we were glad we did.
A young man opened the door as we approach. We were seated in an area that allowed us to hear the musical group and yet talk among ourselves. The items we selected from the available menu were perfect for a Summer evening - fresh, light, and delicious. The performer, Eboni Fondren, did not disappoint.
Thank you, Johnnie's.
I have to day we love going to Johnnie's however the past 2 times we have been there the food has been terrible. The music is always great. We feel the service is slowly going down and the food has just been terrible.
Great food, great service, and wonderful live music!
We love Johnnies!!!! and Veronica our waitress is a delightful and one of the reasons we continue to go on Sundays - and we really enjoy Lonnie of course!
Did not care for the food.
Just went with some friends to catch up
We went to Johnnie's specifically for the music and the food! We have been twice and everything there has been really good! Entertainment (Lonnie McFadden) was fantastic! Would recommend to anyone!
The server is the ONLY reason why I wont go back.if its the fact that they stop being servers after the food arrived and ignored us was one thing. We waited about 1 hour to get our checkbook THEN another hour to get my debit card back. My wife finally had to go find our server and get my card back.
My husband and I really enjoyed the atmosphere, and the music. The food was not that great. It was bland for our taste buds. But we will be returning. And we will try something different to eat.
Great jazz music. We went for dinner and were a little too close to the stage, but it was a nice evening. We will definitely go back.
Great food. Outstanding service.
My expectation was to receive a great dining experience. My salad and entree arrived at the same time, my steak wasnt prepared as I requested. I gave the server my potatoe along with my steak while my steak was being corrected. A few minutes later, he brings my potatoe back. He figured that I wanted to eat that while I'm waiting on my steak to be re cooked.. ummm no..normally when an item is returned, most places bring your food back with fresh items. I asked for a fresh potatoe, the server told me that I had eaten some of it.. well yeah, that was before I knew that my steak wasnt prepared correctly. So, for us, we were expecting a better experience with the food. I will say that I did enjoy the music. The ambiance is nice.
First time to visit and dine. Actual food was pretty good. Waitress was attentive, caring and friendly. Ordered appetizer that didn’t arrive until after meal, but waitress did take off the bill. Ordered a meal (pork chops) that we shared and it was right size for two. Jazz music was very nice. Overall a little pricey for what it was but would go back.
Such a fun place! Lonnie McFadden was performing and was awesome as usual!
Our table had several of the shareable s and we loved them all!
We've already made reservations for next week!
Had a great ambience. The staff was amazing, food was great, and the music was fantastic
Took my mother and brothers to be with her and family. Atmosphere was great waitress and front desk were the best have to give them a perfect score. As for dinner well mom enjoyed the meal which it was meant for her anyway. My sister n law ordered steak salad med rare it was well done. Street tacos not best choice my daughter took them back and was told there were more wings then we received. We really enjoyed the entertainment. But there were few issues with the food. Spending over 130.00 you like to be happy. Maybe next time. I would recommend them and would try it again.
Good food, better service, loved the Jazz, popcorn smell was weird.
Good and service was wonderful. Will be going back.
About 3/4 of our group loved their food, but the other 1/4 thought it was just okay. The pancakes were the most kid-friendly item on the menu, and they were not good. The omelettes and other dishes we ordered were great!
We had an enjoyable evening. Food was good. Music was great. Service was great. Only negative was the smell of popcorn as soon as we entered.
Apprecuate a place to sit and listen to live jazz in a rekaxed setting
Outstanding experience, service was phenomenal and the food was perfect. Very fun overall, highly recommend it to anyone!
