John Howie Steak Ratings and Reviews
My husband and I celebrated our wedding anniversary at John Howie's eight years ago and had a great dining experience. Last Friday, we decided to stay in Bellevue and celebrate our thirteenth wedding anniversary at John Howie's and we had a blast! The service was amazing and we really enjoyed the food. Thank you so much for making our night so special!
Alway excellent service, food and ambiance. Perfectly cooked filet mignon Oscar style was delicious. When I ordered deserts I didn’t know they were comp’d found out when check was presented. Deserts were good but the tarts shells the lemon pie and the Carmel ganache were served in were over cooked, inedible but the insides were delicious! I love the place which is why I return.
Fantastic service and a wonderful experience. Tried the Wagyu steak sampler (Japanese, Australian and USA) and while I am glad I tried it, I'll stick with their standard, but excellent, steaks in the future. I order my steaks served rare, and perhaps this temperature does no allow the marbling in the Wagyu meat to reduce enough. The steaks were amazingly tender, but the flavor was overly rich. One of the steaks was salted too much, but the server had that one removed from our bill. The overall service was just right - there hovering around when you wanted but not there when you didn't need anything. We were there for our anniversary and the staff helped make the occasion even more special.
After spending almost $2,000, the floor manager came up to our table while I was in the bathroom and told my son that there would be no more alcohol served to our table. We had a couple cocktails each and 2 very expensive bottles of wine between 5 adults. While I do understand alcohol service can be subjective, I don't believe we were anywhere near the need of being refused, both based on quantity consumed and our behavior, but it was the tactic used by the manager that I felt completely disrespected my family. When I approached him about his decision, he was rude and short to me. Left a zero tip because of him and will never subject my family, or my wallet, to that nonsense again. Daniel's is better anyway...
Food and service excellent. They were very accommodating as we needed to get to a movie and they were attentive to our timetable. Our server was really knowledgeable and friendly and made the evening great. Food was soooo good! Husband celebrating his birthday and had the 70 day aged ribeye steak - was so flavorful and tender! I had the combo wagyu and it was excellent. Enjoyed every aspect of the meal - even the kopi luwak.
Although our waiter was pleasant and had a sense sophisticated humor, dinner with just a salad course and main entree followed by coffees took almost 3 hours and we had to ask someone else for the check because our waiter was not to be found. I understand that some steakhouses like to give you time so that you don’t feel rushed, but this felt more like he couldn’t make it happen in a timely manner because he simply wasn’t in the vicinity. We were seated by the window and it was literally freezing! Early in the evening I wanted to politely ask if we could move but we didn’t see our waiter again for another 20-25 minutes and then I was just simply more hungry than cold. Wore my coat the entire evening - how sad because I loved my top and I was in a nice restaurant wearing my long wool coat! My steak was marginal for the value and slightly over done (probably because it was their small one, but the kitchen should be able to adjust), the specialty tableside spinach salad was good, but not great. It could have been just an off evening for my waiter and the kitchen. I would try it agin in the future but I won’t recommend it after this experience.
Their beef is all Prime so we all agreed that it melted in your mouth. Desserts were inventive and luscious and wait staff professional. The music was loud and outputting when we arrived but they turned the volume down. The music definitely did not fit a restaurant of this stature and was a real negative.
I was excited to have dinner at this restaurant, having had many dinners at fine dining restaurants like Ruth Chris, El Gaucho, Del Friscos etc... I didn't find it to be up to par with these other estb.. My steak came out not right twice! And my adult beverage was not up to par as well
Everything was delicious, and our server Andy was extremely attentive and efficient. They did a great job recognizing our birthday celebration at the table and the service was amazing. There’s no doubt it’s expensive, but the food is high quality and service 5 Star so for a special occasion I don’t think you’d find a better place.
We had a great dinner at John Howie. Spent a bundle and a half. Table service, wine service, food from the kitchen, were all great. But I have two bits of feedback for management:
* We arrived 10-15 minutes early for our reservation. The host kept mumbling something about "tonight we are seating at 'reservation time.'" Reservation time, like it was some sacred thing. I don't know if this is a ploy to get people into the bar, or an attempt to spread out service. But at our divine reservation time, we were seated into a very quiet/empty dining room. Seems we could have been seated at that table whenever we arrived and could have waited while looking over menus. Instead, we stood in the doorway with our coats and packages, jostling among several other guests who were all waiting for their own precious "reservation time" to arrive. This may be a well-intentioned practice, but when put into practice on a quiet night like ours, it was just bizarre.
* John Howie is an a la carte restaurant, so if you order a steak, that's all you get. That's fine. It's one way to do a restaurant. But to serve a small filet mignon as my daughter ordered on a giant white plate with no garnish or anything? That was also pretty weird. She did order the carrots as a side and fully expected to see a steak and carrots on her plate. Anyway, not such a big deal this one, but when you spend upwards of $80 on a small steak, you might expect some attention to presentation detail. I should have taken a picture. The only way to caption that photo would be "ball of meat on giant white plate."
Other than these two things (and a slightly overcooked and therefore chewy lobster tail), the evening was terrific.
Waiter was snotty at first, Good thing my spouse and I were more into one another then to pay to much attention to any type of negativity. We try to keep a positive frame of mind period especially coming into the new year. New Years celebration between the two of us celebrating life, new beginnings, relationship goals and just the two of us as a whole. The ambiance was wonderful and the food was great, kind of pricey and well worth it. Great choice to impress a date :)
My husband and I with our 11 year old and 8 year old went for dinner to celebrate New Year's Eve and my husbands birthday. The service was AMAZING! and anyone that says this place isn't kid friendly is crazy! First, their is a great kids menu with activities to keep kiddos busy, and our servers were so attentive to the kids and made them feel very comfortable. We even ordered the tableside caesar in which our server let the kids help him make. Friendly, great food, excellent service and definitely someplace I would not hesitate spending the dollars for dinner again!
We are happy and genuinely satisfied repeat customers to John Howie! The menu is full of unique options that you just won't see at the gross majority of steak houses and other types of restaurants E.G. Bone-In Filet Mignons, 48oz Long-Bone-In Ribeye Steak with additional marrow bone, and one of our favorite starters, the Salad with Quail Eggs. The exploration of the array of different-aged steaks on the menu is always, for lack of a better phrase, fun! Also, The wine and spirits list is endless.
We appreciate the font-size on the lengthy food and drink menus, as a lot of steak house menus tend to incorporate text that is too small.
The staff was top-notch during our most recent visit.
The only issue we had was the air conditioning was running in the late evening of a late December day. The temperature was genuinely too cold for indoor dining. We haven't encountered this issue during the previous times we visited. :-)
This is the restaurant for the clientèle who are willing to spend the $$$ to treat themselves to a fancy (and fun) experience. McDonald's this is not!
My friend and I went here to celebrate our birthdays. We were excited to treat ourselves to a nice steak meal, but unfortunately were met with rude/unattentive staff and ill tasting food. We started with the oysters, which after the first one (the after taste was so horrific) we were unable to finish, and this comes from two girls who love oysters! We continued on ordering our steak, I got the filet oscar style and my friend got the japanese wagyu beef. We also ordered a lobster and duck fat potatoes to share. The only thing I liked about my filet was the crab included in the oscar style, the actual steak was tough and was left with only a few bites taken. My friends wagyu beef was too salty she was unable to finish this as well. In regards to the lobster it was tough and salty, so again we left everything uneaten. The potatoes (which who can mess up potatoes) were tasteless and undercooked. The only enjoyable part of this meal was the dessert at the end, which was bananas foster, however at that point we were so disappointed with the actual meal anything could have tasted good, I mean you could have brought us a mcflurry and we would have been happy. Definitely stay away from this place the food is inedible and the staff is pretentious.
Really good service and food. They went out of their way to explain things to us in a way normal people can understand. We had been there before, but the menu is so detailed. This visit was a home run. Everyone in our party had a great time and their food was cooked perfectly. Thanks!
As usual we had excellent service. Small mishap during lunch but the waiter and management sure know how to care of you. We come here multiple times a year and it’s always excellent food, excellent service and a great atmosphere. The Kurabota Tempura bacon is to die for and everything on their menu seems to surpass all expectations. Can’t wait to go back!!!
We went for Christmas Eve dinner - food was wonderful. Service started strong but once we received our meals, everyone disappeared. We had empty dishes sitting for 20 min. The manager walked by and took care of us. When our waiter finally appeared, he dropped dessert menus and took a coffee order. We finished our coffee before dessert could be ordered. For the expense of the meal, service should have been impeccable. I’ll cut them a little slack as it was Christmas Eve but it was disappointing.
The experience started out a little shaky in that I contact the restaurant to inquire about the corkage policy and was told that they would "monitor our consumption but the four bottles of wine for the four of us were not technically against any policy." This seemed strange to me as I simply wanted to know if they limited corkage per patron or per table. The oddness ensued when we walked in with our two bottles and the hostess immediately jumped to say that they have a $30 per bottle corkage as if to deter us from enjoying our wine with our meal. This seemed extremely tacky and inappropriate in an establishment of this caliber.
Everything from that point on was perfect. The server, Thomas, was attentive, professional, and very talented in his ability to handle two tableside services simultaneously. The Fois gras was a wonderful savory version and the salads, steaks, lobster, and sides were all impeccable. All in all this is an excellent modern take on classical steakhouse dining and I will most definitely return.
Went on Christmas Eve to celebrate the holiday. The check in was great, and we were seated after only a short wait. We had an incredible server and his support team. Food was fantastic, but yes its an expensive restaurant. We shared a Tomahawk Steak and the server carved it at our table. It was a great evening and a we had a wonderful time. i have been here before and loved it then and loved it again. I reccomend this restaurant to everyone.
