We always have a great experience at John Howie. The food and service are consistently excellent. It is pricey, so we only go on special occasions. This time my son had the Japanese A5 Wagyu filet mignon and it was incredible. If you are a steak lover, you should try John Howie.

The steaks were cooked perfectly and seasoned well so no extra seasoning was needed. The portions of the salad and sides were huge, my wife and I purchased separate salads and probably could have shared one. We did share two sides and that was definitely enough. The Cajun corn was very good and the twice baked potato was huge. She ordered the USDA Prime filet (6oz) while I ordered the American Wagyu filet (8oz). Both were delicious. I'm not sure the extra $34 for 2oz of Wagyu was worth it. Some day I'll splurge and actually get the Japanese Wagyu, but from now on I think I'll just stick to USDA Prime unless the price difference is minimal. My wife said the bananas foster was one of the best she's had and she's had a lot, usually in Mazatlán, so that's saying something. Be prepared to drop a lot of coin at this place though, this was the most expensive meal for 2 I've paid yet. Similar in price to El Goucho and the Herb Farm.

Dined for husband’s birthday (Nov. 2017)

PROS:
-Service was excellent.
-Never worry about your water being refilled. They are, incredibly, on top of it. They do not refill your water while you are putting food in your mouth or reaching for a piece of bread.
-Waitress was professional, kind, and seemed genuine. She made us feel comfortable and made sure we were completely taken care of.
-Some restaurants will come and ask you, “How is everything?” while you have a mouth full of food, chewing, and trying to respond to them. Our waitress checked on us at the perfect times. She never came while we were actually cutting into our steak, sipping champagne, or wiping our mouths.
-MAIN POINT: the staff do not disturb you while you are actually involved with your meal. They all professionally time it at the right times.
-Waitress recommended a very nice champagne. I am not a champagne drinker, but I ended up getting 2 glasses because it tasted great.
-Lighting was ambient and just right. Not too dark compared to other restaurants where they give you a penlight to read the menu.
-Table placement is perfect. You do not notice the other tables around you and can not hear their conversations. They have booths available as well.
-Their menu pricing is pretty much the same as other steakhouses. Not bad at all. The Waygu is a bit more expensive, but it was expected.

CONS:
-Please enforce the dress code more. I view this place as an upscale restaurant, and truly believe the prices on the menu should match the customer’s outfits.
-There was a table of 4 next to us, and they were dressed in backwards baseball caps, t-shirt’s, jeans, and sneakers. They were also very obviously, inebriated and loud. I could see other guests being disrupted by how loud they were being. If you google John Howie’s dress code, you will find websites stating “business casual.”
-Fin.

That is all for the cons. John Howie is great. I would recommend this place for special occasions.

This place is everything reviewers have said and more. This was our first visit but it won’t be our last. My only complaint is there was an obvious problem after we ordered b/c it took an unreasonable amount of time for our salads to arrive. I’m all for relaxing and enjoying a fine dining experience but this was no bueno.

Lunch at John Howie always is a pleasure. I did economize a little and ordered the Petite Sirloin from the standing Lunch Specialties menu, cooked "as rare as is legal". Delightful. In my Open Table reservation I specified a low - starch diet and asked about vegetable options besides the Yukon Gold mashers (madness I know but at my age I have to prioritize the indulgences). Our server didn't seem to be aware of that request before I brought it up but handled it smoothly with fresh al dente asparagus; great for me as I like the spears to have a little texture. The main dining room can get rather noisy at lunch. Service was wonderful, professional and prompt. My thanks to the team at John Howie for a delicious repast!

The dinner was great. It was a birthday celebration and six of us attended.

One person ordered the Waygu and Lobster tail, which was supposed to be "buttery" and it was tough. Ended up sending it back and they comp'd that meal.

Drinks were perfect. Wine was terribly over priced compared to the cocktails - but I would expect that for this type of establishment.

The food was incredible with the exception of the Waygu.

Both my husband and I thought this was just ok. Good wine selection but the food was nothing you'd really remember. Our waiter was pretty mediocre (we'd have long gaps between being able to order another drink and then getting it), and we had way more interaction with the food server than the waiter himself. Additionally, the timing of the food was weird (sauces and accompaniments would come much later). The steak was good and I loved the selection but the sauces and adds for them were cold- not room temp, but cold enough that when you put it on your steak it was instantly a cold dish (so don't waste your time with the adds because it's weird to eat cold butter or have unmelted blue cheese).
Overall I'd say this place is just a little too big.

Had a reservation to celebrate a birthday. The reservation time did not matter and the staff responses scripted. 25 minutes past the reservation time even arriving 15 minutes early. Food came slow, they forgot it was to celebrate a birthday and it was not a pleasurable experience. Not what was expected of a restaurant like this.

Very disappointed. 7:30 reservation, seated at 8:10, our waiter was very nice but unapologetic, won't go back, food wasn't worth the price and 20 min between app and salad was annoying. We were about to leave after waiting 30 min for main course.

My boyfriend and I went there for celebrate my birthday and we specifically requested a table next to the window when we made a reservation a week before. We got there on time but they said if we want to seat by the window we have to wait 20 min so we decided not to wait that long and accepted the booth.
The waiter was really nice and polite but he didnt even ask us if we were celebrating any occasion or not which in all the other high end restaurant we went to they asked us. The food was good but the steak needed a-little more flavor. The five cheese twice baked stuffed potatoes was amazing. At the end we decided to order desert and request them to put a little candle on it for my birthday but it too the waiter along time to come to our table that we decided to have the desert somewhere else.

Service was amazing but I expected more from the food, especially the Wagyu ribeye steak. It was good but not so good I am raving to friends about it. I've had Kobe in San Francisco that was far better. That said, the lobster mash was incredible as was the caesar salad prepared table side. The wine list went on for days and included wines one can only dream of.

John Howie's is an outstanding restaurant for beef. There are a lot of very fine choices that are prepared well and taste amazing. You will definitely spend some money here, but for the quality of the food and preparation, it is worth it. My only complaint is that this restaurant is noisy. It's not very big, but it can be hard to hear the people at your table. It's also kind of dark...reading the menu was challenging. Normally, this wouldn't be a big deal except this is an expensive dinner out. I would go back again but will adjust my reservation time to get a little bit quieter time.

I have business dinners nationwide every week. I have been to the best restaurants in America. As far as steakhouses go, this is the best and that’s saying something. Just my opinion. Thomas is a fantastic waiter as well as the rest of the team. Oh, and the best bourbon collection I’ve ever seen!! Cheers, Casey

We came here to celebrate our anniversary and it was wonderful! Sophisticated without being stuffy, everyone was friendly and chatty (in the good way!) The food was delicious but filling and there was no shame when we asked for a doggy bag for everything, include the dipping sauce! I would love to make this an annual tradition and highly recommend it to anyone looking for great food, a great atmosphere, and great service.

It was our 1st time and a anniversary celebration. Our dessert was on the house which was a
very nice gesture. But we did think that there are other steakhouses in the Seattle area that are better overall. Out of 4 steakhouses that we have been to, we would have to list John Howie
at #4.
