We dined here for the first time and were pleasantly suprised. Beers are $7. We shared the Mac & Cheese with scallops and shrimp and the scallops and cream with linguini. Everything was delicious. Rich and flavorful. The service was fine and the the dining room was quaint. We will definetly return.
The food is always great at Joanne’s
We had Sunday dinner at Joanne’s and were very happy with our meal. I had the pasta primavera and it was excellent. A simple romaine and chopped tomato salad was also delicious. The only criticism was that the focaccia bread was a little too salty, but we will definitely go back to Joanne’s.
My husband and I entered the restaurant which opened up directly into the bar area. The bar area was busy, but we weren’t greeted by any employees. Not even a look! The hostess was on the phone, and couldn’t be bothered to pause for one moment to acknowledge us. We stood for several minutes and almost walked out, because we weren’t sure what was going on. Finally, a younger woman walked by us a third time, so I grabbed her to let her know that we had a reservation for two. She grabbed menus as the hostess was still on the phone, and escorted us to a table. Once sat, the it was fairly nice ambience until someone in the front started screaming karaoke. We had no clue this could even happen at restaurant. The table of 5 seated next to us looked over with the same look of confusion, but eventually we tuned it out. The food was so so. Pasta a bit too salty and meatballs with a bit too much garlic for our taste. We had a nice glass of wine as well as sparkling water from what looked like a regular water container that had be reused, and not a Pellegrin bottle, yet we were charged $8 for this. Go figure. We probably won’t be returning back, nor recommending to any of our friends and clients here in NYC.
Food was OK, nothing special. Better places for the price.
This was one of those restaurants that two of us thought our entrees were very good (I had the sausage and broccolini dish and my husband had the chicken parmesan) and two of us did not like their food (our friends had the bruschetta and the two red sauce pasta and meatball dishes, which they felt were mediocre). The location is great, near Lincoln Center on the west side; the prices reasonable; the service good; and our table was a nice size for four. So lots to recommend. But I can't rave about the food, which is such a part of the NYC restaurant experience. So try it and see what your experience is.
Better off going to a chain restaurant. Same quality at half the price
Food was overpriced. Bland and not well presented. I asked for real Parmesan cheese for pasta and was given pizza topping. Maybe good for a drink but would not recommend for dinner.
I booked this place before the opera so as not to go to my same place. I saw it had good ratings, but didn’t read more into it.
Loved it! Happily surprised. It’s my new go to before the opera.
The Salmon with white bean and artichoke was cooked perfectly.
Cozy atmosphere, great service, great food and an overall cute place.
I am afraid my experience at Joanne Trattoria was poor. This was our first time visiting and it was for my girlfriends birthday. I had made a note on the reservation but unfortunately the staff missed an opportunity and didn't do anything special. The arrival experience was uncharacteristic of a restaurant of this caliber as we were not even welcomed. We simply had to walk up to the podium and tell the host we had a reservation, they quickly proceeded to walk us to our table, but the again, very limited welcoming interaction. Throughout the evening we were served/helped by different servers which was very confusing and at times felt as though they had forgotten about us. The food was tasteless and the dessert was almost uneatable. No one asked about how our food was, offered coffee, we simply got the bill and that was the final interaction. We were appalled that a restaurant in New York City, associated with the Lady Gaga family and with pricing range of that of a fine dinning restaurant will provide such poor service. Very disappointing.
Been a few times and always great service and food.
Very cute restaurant with quite possibly the best Italian food I’ve ever had (sorry Aunt Rosemary!). The Germanotta Family recipe for meatballs is incredible, and was a great starter to a wonderful meal. The server was very nice and helpful, and made the dining experience even better. It’s a little pricey, but definitely worth the expenses.
The staff, and place it’s self isn’t bad. The food however wasn’t so great for us, it wasnt hot. Did not taste fresh at all, tasted all most microwaved. The value for money is not great at all. Disappointed is a understatement.
Wonderful NYC Italian with the added Gaga ambiance. Short walk to the Metropolitan Opera.
My 13 year old daughter has been asking me to go to this restaurant for over year, as she is a huge Lady Gaga fan. We finally went on Sunday 3/4/18 and it was nothing short of exceptional! The ambiance is wonderful. It's very cozy and relaxing and, even though there were other diners there, it was quiet. The best part was the food was excellent! This was a huge bonus for me as I was really taking my daughter there for the experience, but the food and wine was really great! We will definitely be back! The Spinach and Artichoke dip was excellent and the Sunday Special was worth the travel time to get there....also our server was wonderful! As if it couldn't get better, on the way out my daughter recognized the owner in the restaurant. He was so nice and he let my daughter take a picture with him. She will never forget that experience! Thank you, Joe, for giving my girl a day she will always remember!
Very nice server and greeter at the door. Loved the Minestrone soup
Really good food and drink. Keeps getting better and better. very nice people taking care of the customers. very cozy and warm. authentic. try the meatballs. The real deal.
The food here is consistently good. We sat on the heated patio which was quieter so we were able to talk . We had dessert for the first time - loved the chocolate mousse cake.
We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner tonight. The dining room is warm cozy and very comfortable. The menu has something for everyone. We shared a delicious pizza and Caesar salad for starters along with a bottle of Sangiovese. Then on to the mains of two pasta dishes , chicken and steak. All were wonderful and a little dessert and coffee to finish. The house special pulled pork pasta dish was my favorite while everyone loved their own choices. We plan to repeat again soon. The service was friendly and we felt well taken care of at all times.
The staff is very friendly and accommodating. The food is good, some variety offered, and the service is fast. It is somewhat crowded, but not very noisy which is nice. We find it a good place to eat when we want to get to a concert on time. A reservation is often needed.
I’ve been here several times and have never been disappointed. The food is excellent, good wine and apps. It is a favorite “go to” place of mine.
Didnt feel welcome. It took a full 3 minutes for anyone to even acknowledge our presence. The Hostess looked at us like we were crazy. Food was average.
I don’t know why it took me so long to try this restaurant but I am glad I finally caught up with it. It is lovely, the vibe is friendly. It serves up a tasty variety of Italian comfort food, the drinks are generous. As a veteran west spider, I find it a very welcome and welcoming spot, one of the nicest in the neighborhood. Go and enjoy. Thank you to Lady Gaga’s talented folks for planting it here.
The service is always very good. My server Emily was excellent. This time I had the delicious meatball appetizer followed by the scallops in cream sauce with a side of Brussels sprouts. The chocolate mousse cake was outstanding . Joanne is an excellent place for pre-Lincoln Center dining.
Awesome dining experience...exceeded expectations by far! When in the city, will definitely revisit!
Delicious food, as always!
The bread was cold and tasteless. The server was attentive but the food is overpriced and not of great quality. The ambiance is nice but the food disappointing Not worth the price.
Made a 6:15 reservation here for dinner for two before a Saturday evening NY Philharmonic concert.
We were a few (ok, 10) minutes late and the staff was gracious and held our table for us.
We were quickly seated and got our drinks and food in a pretty reasonable amount of time.
The entrees were very nicely done and the wines wonderfully matched with our dishes.
The noise level was a bit on the loud side and the space seemed cramped, but those are minor quibbles with an overall terrific dining experience. While we didn't have any celebrity sightings, we'll still go back again; maybe AFTER the concert dinner rush :-)
I'm picky about Italian food. But the Germanotta family brings it with Italian classics that taste like home. What great comfort food with a fun ambiance on the Upper West Side. I'll be sure to return here regularly.
First time we were here. Very warm and comfortable restaurant, especially after coming out of a cold, rainy night. Service was always attentive. The menu was excellent with the usual Italian standards, plus some interesting surprises. We had difficulty making our selections with so many options. Vegetable side dishes is important to us, and there were several to choose from. We picked the brussel sprouts and pancetta. Portions were substantial. The only critical comment, BOTH our entrees were VERY salty, as evidenced by the amount of water consumed later in the evening. When you go - and we will go back - ask that the cooks not add any additional salt to the dishes other than that already included in sauces. (Oh, the white sangria was delicious. Light and fruity. But no apples?!)
My meal of excellent Cesar salad and pork ragout with penne was very satisfying but my friend's hangar steak was sent back because it was tough. It was disappointing that their signature dessert of "Nutella lasagna" was not available that evening. Bar drinks were very good but Happy Hour only on certain days. I would go back, perhaps in nicer weather when the enclosed garden dining area is unenclosed.
This was a terrific find. We were seated in the covered patio area at a high table. Very comfortable and quiet at 5:15 pm. The food was delicious. We had the salmon and it was perfect.
It is always a pleasure to go to a restaurant where the food, service and price leave you feeling full, happy and content. The food is excellent. Our sever Elise is a pleasure, always a smile and the price is very reasonable. I will always try to hit Joanne Trattorias when around.
A must go to when I'm in NYC. The food is delicious, as are the drinks. The Tuscan Ribeye was one of the best steaks I've ever eaten and the Lobster Raviolis incredible!
The staff are very friendly!
Thanks! See you again, next time!
Just a blah experience. A TV going in the dining room? No bread offered at an Italian restaurant? No specials?
This is a charming, old-school Upper West Side family-owned place—a dying breed in Manhattan. Don’t expect authentic Italian, but red sauce Italian in the traditional American manner. Stick with the hearty classics, enjoy the very well-made cocktails, and enjoy the rustic charm of the little dining room. Leave the desserts—old school is sometimes best forgotten.
Seated right away. Great atmosphere. They forgot to bring out second course and then offered to remove it from check. White truffle sauce very good; fettuccine and mushrooms with it were okay.
Food was poor. Arancini (rice balls) were like paste. All dishes we ordered with a tomato based sauce were very acidic. I chewed a few Tums before sitting to write this review.
Bummer they were only serving their Valentine’s Day menu but was delicious.
Really like this neighborhood restaurant but will never go again on a “special” day. Normally food is simple and tasty but the restaurant tried way too hard to make a meal worth almost $100 per person prix fixe that was frankly a Valentine’s Day ripoff. Too much food/many courses and it all felt pre-packaged and warmed. Really sorry to have to review it like this but I wanted the everyday Joanne, not a pricey wannabe. It has frankly ruined my palate and I may not be back.
