Joanne Trattoria Ratings and Reviews
This is a charming, old-school Upper West Side family-owned place—a dying breed in Manhattan. Don’t expect authentic Italian, but red sauce Italian in the traditional American manner. Stick with the hearty classics, enjoy the very well-made cocktails, and enjoy the rustic charm of the little dining room. Leave the desserts—old school is sometimes best forgotten.
Really like this neighborhood restaurant but will never go again on a “special” day. Normally food is simple and tasty but the restaurant tried way too hard to make a meal worth almost $100 per person prix fixe that was frankly a Valentine’s Day ripoff. Too much food/many courses and it all felt pre-packaged and warmed. Really sorry to have to review it like this but I wanted the everyday Joanne, not a pricey wannabe. It has frankly ruined my palate and I may not be back.
lovely place, lovely outdoor terrace, very nice service but the food was quite disappointing. Very mediocre. I had a chicken cutlet with arugula and a side of brussel sprouts with bacon that sounded really good. Not. Maybe the Italian standards are better?
It was late -- after 8:30 on a quiet week night, so maybe that was part of the problem.
This place is amazing. Very cute and charming but the food is the real reason to go. Every single thing we got was outstanding. We got meatballs and calamari as an appetizer. Both amazing. I don't think I have ever had such a good meatball...and the meat ragu was delicious. Lemon artichoke chicken was the best I have ever tasted. I wanted to lick the plate. Pork short rib ragu was exactly right. I imagined it would be pretty damn good. It was better. Chicken pesto pasta special was perfectly creamy without taking away from the delicious pesto. Light and fluffy chocolate mousse cake and espresso with Sambuca finished of the best meal we have had at a restaurant in years. Every single thing was perfection. Will definitely be coming back next time we are in NYC.
Cute place, very cozy. Sat outside. We had no forks for our appetizers, followed by not having forks for our dinner since they took them with the appetizers. Very slow service. Food was delicious! Meatballs were huge and flavorful. Brussel sprout side was soo good. My lobster ravioli was drowning in sauce. The food was good enough to go back and hope i get better service.
This was the 2nd time in a few years that I’ve been to Joanne, and it was just as amazing as the 1st time! The veal chop malinese was seriously delicious. The cheese and meat plate was super yummy. The ambiance was adorable decorated for Valentine’s Day theme. The fireplace was burning when you walked in so it set the stage for an adorable setting. All of the service staff was delightful and prompt. Hands down will return very soon!! Loved it!! #joanne #loveladygaga
Arrived early after a Sat matinee show, seated even though was .5 hour early for reservation. Great service, which I was having trouble with because of reading reviews. Joshua was very informed and very attentive and helpful to my wife and myself. All in all it was a very pleasing dinner experience and we will be back.
I stumbled upon Joanne Trattoria on Grammy Night. Need I say more? It was so lovely and romantic and although I dined alone I felt quite comfortable. Not to mention a Gaga fan who offered me his stool to watch her perform Joanne on the Grammy Awards. Perfect. The dinner was good but missed greatness just because I found the gravy to be a bit bland on the Spaghetti & Meatball Sunday dinner. I still ate almost all of it and the wine was great. Thank you.
Unfortunately, our dining experience started with a waitress who appeared to have major attitude when my husband was trying to point out the bottle of wine we wanted. Next came the bread that did not appear to be fresh and had no flavor. My husband had a pasta dish which he said was good however, I ordered the chicken parm where the chicken was dry, not enough tomato sauce and the mozzarella cheese was tough and did not appear to be fresh.
I am not a person that writes reviews on my dining experiences however, I was so unhappy with this particular one I felt it was necessary to do so.
Joanne’s Trattoria was wonderful ! The food was so delicious and the restaurant is just lovely. Coxy and warm with a very attentive staff. We came in from Long Island and it was well worth it! I insist you get the pork ragu with papardella pasta. Fantastic!!
Joanne’s atmosphere is sweet and low key but the food is old fashioned Italian, mediocre at best, and way overpriced. Charging a high supplement for gluten free pasta is just one more negative. Even the best restaurants in the city are happy to accommodate with no additional I won’t be back.
This was the second time I went there. The first time I had the salmon, which was the best I ever had. I went back to have it again. The first time. my friend had branzino. Just amazing. When I went back this time, I had the salmon again and again it was fabulous. My friend had the eggplant meatballs and spaghetti. That too was excellent. The only criticism I have is, we are bread eaters and both times the bread was awful. I shouldn't complain about that maybe, it was too awful to eat so it saved me from extra calories.
It was so disappointing to end an otherwise wonderful night with the awful dining experience my friends and I had at Joanne Trattoria.
The wait staff were completely void of personality, charm or a point of view. When we would ask them questions about the menu they would ostensibly recite the menu items back. For example, when I asked what our waitress thought about the homemade meatballs, the bolognese, and the chicken parm, including what she would recommend, she told me "Yeah there is a bolognese and the meatballs are homemade". Yes ma'am I read the menu thank you.
My boyfriend ordered the antipasto salad and that is what came but the waiter kept barking "Cesar...Cesar...Cesar" as he squeezed the plate down thus causing confusion and a nice explanation to him that he wasn't citing the right salad. Instead of realizing that he stormed away and our dead-in -the- eyes waitress came back and just barked "WHAT'S wrong with it?!" It wasn't a bad situation at all, she just added yet another layer of negativity
The servers also wouldn't clear any plates or silverware when new food items would come but rather just hover until either we did something or they squeezed the plates in our on top of each other.
In retrospect it's shocking we had this issue and ordered multiple items becuase NONE OF THE FOOD HAD ANY TASTE. Even the bread was lousy with no taste. I guess the chef lives in an igloo becuase the "homemade meatballs" were cold and the spaghetti and sauce had no flavor whatsoever.
The ambience was really nice upon entry but as soon as you pass the bar and the weird dessert fridge that looks like something out of a gas station, the place was an inferno and had all this terrible spotlight lighting that did not create a nice environment to eat at all.
There is zero value for your money at Joanne Trattoria because neither the service, food, or ambience was good and we just left upset becuase it had been on our list for awhile.
Highly NOT RECCOMENDED.
The food was excellent! The service was great until we wanted the bill. We realized it took 20 minutes from when we asked for the bill to when it was delivered. My husband and I weren't in a rush so we didn't really care. I think if we had been more persistent, the bill would've come faster.
We will definitely be returning. The servers were incredibly friendly and the good was great.
