JO2 Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
I never think it bodes well when your server approaches your table in such an obviously poor spirit that you have to work to turn their mood around. We eventually did, but it took most of our meal to do it. I definitely have never been told, after inquiries into cocktails, and deciding to opt for wine instead, “Good choice”, by a server. The food was passable, but sauces not quite balanced and tending towards the sweet side. Small portions for starters and mains, with the exception of tempura green beans, which were super basic and drizzled with a canned tasting oyster/hoisin combo sauce. Overall, a disappointing experience with harried staff and uninspired and unmotivated service. Definitely will not return or recommend.
Incredibly noisy, one of the worst I have ever seen..........could not hear the server when he stood immediately by the table. Could not converse with my guest for the din. Took ten mins for anyone to come to the table after we were seated. Took 35 mins to get firsts course after placing order, and 4r5 mins after that for the main courses. Food is good, better than average, not an inspired wine list, relatively expensive. Not recommended.
This is THE FINEST restaurant on the island of Kauai!
The food is fresh, inventive, delicious and remarkable.
We loved every item we ordered, enjoyed every bite and are scheming to return before we are scheduled to head home.
The prices are quite reasonable for this quality, the service is superb and the ambience is lovely.
The HIGHEST RATING possible, JO2 is beyond compare!!!
I am reluctant to write a review for this stellar restaurant, because I am afraid when I return I will be unable to get a table! The interior is modern, elegant, and casual, the volume is quiet conversation level, the food is to die for and the plating is lush and artful. We started with cocktails (shared) A floating market- which tasted beautifully of the sea, and a smokey sage drink that we all fought over. Both balanced, tasty, and gorgeous in the glass. We had a mix of pupu, first courses, and mains that we all shared. There was a mix-up on two dishes (because they were entered into the computer wrong) which was quickly discovered, and handled with grace by our experienced server. Big winners- curried cauliflower and brussel sprouts, incredible seared scallops- possibly the best scallops I have ever had, the shrimp and lobster risotto, and the slow cooked wagyu beef cheek. The duck and kale salad was delicious, but could have benefited from a few more pickles to balance the sweet dressing, and rich duck. No dessert because we were all together too full. Thank you for a dinner we will never forget.
We booked online for a later dinner reservation and then called the restaurant to see if we could walk in "now" and they were very accommodating and we ended up seeing our dear friends there and the were able to seat us next to each other...
This is "THE BEST" The food is amazing, people amazing, service amazing... we will keep going back!
One of the greatest meals we have ever had. The seafood dishes were prepared with creativity and enthusiasm. The vegetables had taste and the sauces complemented everything. Do not miss this wonderful restaurant! Our server who has worked with the chef for years and years was enthusiastic about the restaurant and made us feel as we were guests of the house. The value was incredible.
This restaurant makes a huge effort to source as many products locally as they can. I had a piece of fish that I had never heard of called Moi (Hawaiian for king) and it had excellent preparation with crispy fried spinach. It was sourced from local shore fishermen. The tempura green beans were lightly battered and hot and crisp. My husbands Kampachi was paired with shrimp and clams, all the elements cooked perfectly.
JO2 was outstanding! We started with the polenta crusted scallops which were done perfectly. Light crunchy crust in a superb lilikoi sauce. Amazing. The beet salad was a treasure of flavors and textures. We had Mahi Mahi and rack of lamb as main courses. The Mahi was cooked perfectly with a buttery smooth texture. The lamb also cooked to perfection in a Chipotle blackberry sauce that was a delightful complex of sweet, rich, and spices. For my taste, the Chipotle could have been a bit more forward but the sauce was still incredible. All in all, it was the best meal I have had in recent memory.
Exceptional, by far the best food on the Island for finer dining in a casual setting. Jacob, our server was attentive and informative, but didn't rush us. We had two appetizers, the Korean Beef Filet and Lobster Duck Lumpia-both were served on a lovely bed of local vegetables and tangy sauces. Our main entrees were cooked to perfection, the Opakapaka and Moi. On recommendation my husband had the banana cream pie which came "deconstructed" and he said was the best he has ever had! Highly recommend this restaurant. It is a little off the beaten path and in a small strip mall, but so worth it.
Excellent food. Was there 2yrs ago prior to expansion. Now it was a bit loud. Not many tables added but helps with entrance. Definitely need reservations now. Grill area could use better ventilation-much smokiness at times in table area-may be due to heavy rain outside affecting ventilation.
Will definitely go back.
Great food. Service not so much. Salads came 1 minute before getting our salads. Entre for one in our party of 4 was late although they offered free dessert to make up for it. But when check came charge for "free dessert" was on it as well as $8 sparkling water which we did not order and did not get. Check your tab!
We have had multiple meals at JO2 and they have all been consistently delicious and excellent! The menu is changed daily based upon what Chef Jean Marie Josselin feels is the freshest and best quality available. We remain impressed with the professional servers and kitchen staff who have done an terrific job with matching the pacing and requests for just the two of us to one of the evenings where we brought a party of 8. All of our friends commented that their dinner at JO2 was the best they had on Kauai.
The Early Dinner Hour 3 course prefix menu between 5-6pm featured two fresh fish choices on the evenings we tried it and was an exceptional value. We are looking forward to dining at JO2 at our next opportunity. Mahalo for a great dining experience!
J02 is nicely decorated but in a not so nice location. Not many vegan options. Food is nicely decorated. Very tasty. Good service. Prices are ridiculously high for the portions. You need to spend $50 per person without drinks or dessert to be full. We spent $83 and the portions and food value was about 1/2 that price.
We dine at JO2 frequently during our visits to Kauai, and are never disappointed. The bluefin tuna sashimi was exquisite. The heirloom tomato salad was very tasty. The green beans tempura are always delicious and one of our favorites. Our entrees were excellent: potato crusted opakapaka, and seafood risotto.
Pupus-perfect, entrees-opakapaka and grouper cooked and sauced innovatively and deliciously, and lots of interesting veggies. The servers all seem to be enthusiastic and knowledgeable. Well done. As good as we’ve had anywhere.
