Zagat Survey rates JJ’s as “one of KC’s top restaurants.” It earned that distinction with a contemporary American menu featuring dishes like the highly regarded Paco Shrimp appetizer, fresh seafood dishes and the perpetual favorite, JJ’s Pride, known as one of the best steaks in town.
Many of the ingredients are sourced locally to ensure freshness. And meals are complimented by a Wine Spectator award winning wine list with over 1500 selections. The bar is dominated by a library of liquors, scotches, and vintage ports. And it’s all delivered by one of the finest serving staffs in Kansas City.
Our server made the night. Sadly, we’re not recalling her name but she was wonderful.
Awesome Happy Hour bar. Dinner was outstanding!
The food and wine was delicious! The decor reminded me of an Olive Garden..very generic looking.
Great wine list, service, and happy hour tacos. Beautiful evening on the patio.
I enjoyed my meal and the dining room is lovely. The food tasted very good but the presentation needs improving a lot. My server, Lauren, was the best! He made the evening a very pleasant experience.
Loved the food...great menu selections! Beautiful ambience!
Wines by the glass selection is limited, but satisfactory.
Overall, a lovely evening with friends at dinner.
Food is good but decor is boring; it's a dated look. There are a lot of other restaurants that are more lively with good food. I noticed an obscene price on a toney glass of Champagne on the menu. I love Champagne, but if you're going to offer this, I suspect it needs to be some kind of loss leader.
We expected better service and attention. The task of serving us was completed, but we did not feel we were a priority. The food was ok. We asked for “medium” steaks and all three were “rare” (deep red color and blood ridden juice.) The waiter did not check on us so we just “settled” with what we got! The cheesecake was a rough cut, was not garnished and was bland. We wanted a high-end experience to celebrate a birthday and was disappointed. We will not return.
Great food and service! One of the best in KC! Definitely will be back.
KC Strip and Grilled Pork Chop were excellent and the ganache was to die for. Unbelievable wine selection!
Our server and food was outstanding!
Our server, Chris, had a knack for arriving at our table at exactly the right time. A very enjoyable evening.
Our guests had not fined at JJ’s. They were impressed and grateful to have been introduced.
We were celebrating with our team at our 2020 Business Planning Retreat. Originally, we were sat at an indoor table. However, it was such a gorgeous night, we requested the patio instead. We were immediately accommodated. Half the table enjoyed a bottle of wine and the other two had the Sonic drink -- seriously tastes like a cherry limeade - like being a kid again. The soup du jour with italian sausage was delish. We had 2 chicken marsalas, 2 medallions and 1 ahi at our table -- all hit the spot. Our server was very informative and expedient. We really enjoyed her. We'll be back!
Fantastic food and service. Very pleased. Thanks so much
We love visiting JJ's when we are in KC. The service is always top-notch, the wine list is quite impressive and the menu never disappoints. We had an outstanding ahi tuna on our last visit and we always order the little purses as an appetizer. It's also so nice to find a locally-owned restaurant on the Plaza. We will be back next time we're in town!
Outstanding...as expected from previous visits to JJ's
The outdoor patio was magical
I would not recommend based on this visit. This visit was unlike our previous visits and was very disappointing. Once we were seated it took 20 min before we were acknowledged and that wasn't even our server. When our server did arrive at our table, she apologized for the delay as she was busy tending to a larger party. There was no mention of any specials even though the menu has a special item of the day that will be described by your server. I ordered the RibEye which I was promptly told was no longer available that night (dinner reservation was at 6:30 which is not very late). Once order was taken, we did receive appetizers and salads timely but was left with a long wait for the entree. It seems the larger parties in the back were bringing out dinners and it appeared all hands were on deck.
We would have appreciated a warning when we were seated that service was going to be slow and we may find it to be quicker sitting at the bar. At least we would have been warned.
We booked JJ's because our previous experiences have been very good. On this night, we were celebrating our 40th Anniversary (mentioned in reservation) which was acknowledged as we checked in with the Hostess. However, once seated there were no further acknowledgements.
Overall a very disappointing evening
Both drinks very good. We started with mussels in creamy curry sauce. The mussels were very tiny but I loved the sauce and asked for bread to dip in it. We got a couple small plates - the lamb chop and fettuccini with veggies. Both delicious - although lamb chop was bigger last time. A little pricy for small plates but if you're not too hungry, it's a nice option. Service was impeccable and ambiance is quite nice in dining room. Bar and patio looked nice also and they serve happy hour in those two locations.
The noise level was so loud, we couldn’t even hear each other.
Yes it is a very upscale place. The service was excellent. The view by a window was difficult to see out of past shrubs and a poorly weeded area. I was disappointed at the view for being a window table near the plaza. All of the food was tasty except my filet which had no flavor. The salad was excellent as was the appetizer but if I ever went back I would definitely not order the steak filet. I should have commented to the server about the lack of flavor.
Our first time there. Dinner was excellent!!!
It was my grandsons first fine dining experience and they loved it. One grandson had the filet and lobster tail. First time with lobster and he was won over. I had lamb and it was delicious. The waiter was right on top of everything. I have one grandson who wants to redesign every restaurant, but not this one. Great experience.
I would love to give five stars to this Kansas City gem. My first visit was truly a five star experience. The service was on point and the food and wine were beyond amazing. Our server recommended a South African Pinot Noir, and it was heavenly. My most recent visit to JJ's was fantastic with the exception of the service. The supporting staff was wonderful and attentive, but our server would dash off after one person in our party of four made a request of food or drink without waiting to hear if any other person at the table wanted to place an order. I will definitely continue coming back to JJ's. I am in love with this place.
We come here for special occasions and usually have great service which I consider part of the experience. Unfortunately, this time was very different. The waiter was not attentive at all and we needed to call him over constantly just to order food or drink. He gave no extra input on menu items and did not offer alternatives if something was no longer available. The food was fabulous.
This is my favorite restaurant in the KC area and I bring my clients and friends. Best food and service.
Very solid food and service. Ambience could use a boost. Overall thumbs up
Great service, food and atmosphere. Would not change a thing. Great Gazpacho special and fabulous snapper. Thanks for a wonderful time.
Their happy hour is so fantastic!!! They're house white wine in the happy hour was so good that I had to go out and find it myself. We did up in the dining room and really enjoyed our dinner. My hubby loved the beet salad. And the pork chop . My house salad and grilled salmon were fabulous!
The atmosphere is really nice however our food took 2 hours to come out. We arrived at 7:45 and did not get our food until almost 10 pm. Our server never even acknowledged how long we waited on our food and hardly said 5 words to us the entire time. The food was underwhelming to say the least. The medallions had a strange after taste and the plate had no presentation to it whatsoever... Boar ragu was good but for a 250+ dollar tab for 4 people we were pretty disappointed in the entire experience, specifically the service and price for what we received.
From the receptionist to the waiters the dining experience was excellent. Had fun with brief conversations. The employees were actually concerned about their customers. They asked questions to induce conversation about who we were as a couple, what caused us to dine at JJ’s and we got to find out about some of your employees. The dining experience and ambience of the restaurant worked together to marry form and function to your establishment. Thank you.
First time I have felt like the serving size was small. The mashed potato side seemed like 1/2 cup. Medallions very thin. Not what I normally experience here for the price.
Great find. The cauliflower salad was great but rather chinch y for the price. As was the Caesar salad. Dinner was outstanding. Chix Marsala a s has trout S entree.
Four of us really enjoyed the restaurant. The waiter was very helpful and as soon as we sat down the people in the next table raved about the food. We really enjoyed reading through the wine list and at the wine we picked was fantastic. Not one of us was disappointed with the meal. Now we need to come back for happy hour.
First time at JJ's. The service as well as the steak was among the best I've ever experienced.
Exceptional service and awesome food! We were celebrating a friends birthday and the restaurant was very accommodating. They surprised Linney with a complimentary Birthday dessert! JJ’s made it an exceptional lunch!
Absolutely superb in every way. Beet salad and onion soup were outstanding as was the pasta fettuccine with shimp.
