Jilly's Cafe Ratings and Reviews
A very lovely place to have a delicious dinner. It is small, intimate and very much like a European restaurant. The food is consistently delicious, beautifully presented and fairly priced. Parking is easy after 6pm in the lot just north of the restaurant. A little gem.
Fabulous evening. My boyfriend and I went out for a date in hopes of having a nice dinner at a new location, and were beyond ecstatic with our experience. The food was incredible! I had the bouillabaisse and he had the venison. Great atmosphere, fantastic employees, and magnificent recipes. Will most certainly be returning.
What a charming spot! I'd been here years ago and liked it, took my husband for his birthday and the food is still fabulous. Just recently switched to new, young owners who plan of keeping what works and continuing to do some updates. The creme brulee is the new owner's own recipe and EASILY the best creme brulee I've ever had. Pork tenderloin also very delicious. Great wine selection. We'll be back!
This old favorite haunt is now under new management, but the chef, kitchen staff, menus and ambiance remain unchanged. The new owner was our gracious host and waitperson, and she was welcoming, informative and warm-hearted. As the menu and preparation were familiar from many past visits, there were no surprises and no disappointments. The wine list is being revamped and, accordingly the printed list is no longer accurate. We will hope that a good selection of reasonably priced French wines will be retained. There are plans to alter the decor, but we trust that the intimate French bistro atmosphere will stay the same. We highly recommend that patrons already familiar with Jilly's will hurry back for another visit and that those who love fine dining will flock there to share a delightful experience.
Jillys is around the corner from me and it's a great ladies lunch spot. A dear friend told me he'd never been there so I treated for his birthday. We had a great evening Dinner specials were varied as was the regular menu. We had mussels appetizer which was very good. Both had the spare rib special. Very well prepared and eye pleasing presentation. Desserts were fabulous. A decadent chocolate cake and one of the best creme brûlée s I've tasted.
Very extensive wine selection.
It's a neighborhood gem.
My husband and I celebrated our 30-year wedding anniversary at Jilly's and had a beautiful experience. The food, ambience and service were excellent. The (new) owners waited on us and were so personable. We even learned that Jilly's is celebrating 30 years too!
Jilly's Cafe was lovely. It was like stepping into an old world European cafe. The food was outstanding. We started with the Mussels which were amazing and exactly how mussels should be prepared. For my entree I had the mushroom omelet and it was not only beautiful but absolutely perfect in every way. The mushrooms were sauted and seasoned perfectly with just the right amount of swiss cheese and herbs and rolled into the perfect omelet. Perhaps one of the best omelets I've ever had. My friend had the crab cakes and they were exactly as a crab cake should be. The coffee was very good too! I just LOVE this little place and look forward to another visit as there were so many other things on the menu I would love to try.
If you're looking for typical brunch fare, like eggs, pancakes, waffles, etc. you will be disappointed. There are pancakes and eggs on the menu, but not much of a selection, and the rest is main-course entrees, like roast pork tenderloin and salmon fillet. The three brunch items did not appeal to me, so I had the pork tenderloin. It was good, but not what I would expect to eat for brunch. I think it would be better to go here for regular lunch or dinner.
Jilly's a neighborhood gem. It's relatively quiet and the food is French and very good. The demographic is on the older side, which suits us well. As a middle-aged couple, we are often searching for places to meet friends that are both good for foodies and still quiet enough for us to be able to talk. There are not many places that fit that description, so we appreciate Jilly's and will return again for many more dinners.
We dine at Jilly's every couple of months, and we have never been disappointed with the service or atmosphere, which really duplicates a small European bistro. The food tends to be fresh and well prepared and our entrees certainly were: an excellent pork tenderloin, and delicious breast of duck. My wife's Caesar salad was a B+ , but my spring roll (which was a traditional crispy presentation last time) was a confusing pocket of soft dough with filling. While the wine list is notable for well-priced choices, my first two were unavailable!! I was offered a 3rd wine at a lower price, which I accepted. (I was charged the higher price, nonetheless.) Also, we were celebrating my birthday, and Jilly's was told as much, but I didn't even get a greeting, much less a comped dessert. Lastly, they don't have an espresso machine!! How can a French bistro not serve espresso?? We might stretch out the next interval before returning.
The food is very good. And fairly priced. And they do not hose you on the price of wine by the glass. The crowd is older. And quiet. So it does not have much of a vibe. But that is just fine. Especially if you want to have a nice meal and conversation. For a Saturday night, the diners were gone around 9:30 pm. Probably a reflection of the older clientele. But again, I didn't go there for the "scene".
Nikolai greeted us for our reservation and we were seated at a "reserved" table. We have eaten here many times, but it has been several years since our last visit. Staff has changed, but the food maintains the high quality in preparation and plating of the past. The beet salad was very big, delicious and a must at this restaurant. The triple chocolate dessert was awesome.
Food is well prepared and presented. Our waiter, a long-time employee, was attentive, but subtle. He gave us good advice on wine and a perfect recommendation for dessert. We love the ambience of this small but outstanding gem in Evanston. Definitely worth a visit.
