Excellent experience with Jilly's in the past so going to chalk this visit up on being low on staff. Bartender was not there and service was very slow with waiter mixing drinks, bussing tables, and generally without help.
Escargot and Octopus appetizers were excellent.
Bouillabaisse and Branzino fish main course were ok and hot but not up to what i expected.
Would go again, just hope they get their staffing issues in order.
Such a great meal and cute spot. Dishes were all well made and ingredients tastes fresh. Will definitely be returning!
We have been to Jilly’s many times over the years, but this was our first visit since the pandemic. We felt very safe and comfortable with the spacing and care of the staff. Our server was excellent. My escargot Bourguignone was fantastic; my wife’s Caesar salad was second to none, and enough to share. Her entree, seafood pasta was huge with tons of shrimp and scallops and tasted great. My duck entree was prepared perfectly with wonderful flavor. The wine list is extensive with many reasonably priced selections. We topped it all off with fantastic desserts: chocolate lava cage and creme brûlée, both perfect. They do such a great job; I hope more diners take advantage of the top experience they offer.
We were the only ones in the restaurant so we had the undivided attention of the manager and the chef. Portions were quite large and prices were amazing for the quality and quantity of the food. Tomato fennel soup and pear/blue cheese salad were excellent, as was the branzino with patty pan squash and melted butter. We finished with traditional profiteroles and crème brûlée, very generous portions that we couldn’t finish. A delicious evening!
Great food. Great service. Great dinner. Would recommend to anyone in Evanston!
We were the only customers in the restaurant for over an hour on a Sunday afternoon. We feel that the restaurant will be bankrupt within the next month. I believe the server did not understand we ordered 2 brunches and my husband was served an appetizer and dessert without any entree. The menu was greatly reduced with neither crepes nor most sandwiches available. They do have parking next door but no outdoor dining just dine-in with social distancing and delivery.
Everything was delicious for breakfast. Coffee was good. I’ll be back.
Our vegetarian granddaughter thoroughly enjoyed her risotto, my husband his steak sandwich, and I my shrimp with noodles.
Nice, comfortable environment
The food as always was great. Ali was our server and he was excellent. The service was spot on. Definitely one our go to places for dinner in Evanston.
A lovely bistro for fine dining at a reasonable price. The only drawback is no parking for lunch.
We were in a rut spending years at the usual well advertised, although adequate, French bistros in and around Chicago. And then I appropriated a recent issue of North Shore magazine, featuring restaurant reviews, from the service department waiting area at my Ford dealer I was amazed at the volume of French restaurants I discovered-new to me-including Jilly’s. Two days later our party of three was seated without wait at 7:00 pm on a Saturday. This quaint little storefront bistro did not miss a beat from its reasonably priced wines to the ample portion of seared foie gras to the steak frites, rack of venison, and pillard with potato hemispheres with citrus butter sauce. We all agreed our meals were simply the best-and we’ve experienced the best both here and in Paris. How I overlooked this little gem escapes me but while I once was lost now I’m saved. Jilly’s. Go there now.
Excellent menu--Rack of venison was outstanding. Every dish was excellent. Seating is a bit tight, but acceptable.
Ali was great! Food was great!
Friday for lunch & we were the only people in the place (which was fine). Food was reasonable and selection was good. Our food was well prepared, tasty and good portions. The server was a little inattentive despite us being the only customers but not terrible. We enjoyed it quite a bit and would return & recommend. The one true downside is that there is no easy parking nearby.
This is the most wonderful place for a family or friend get-together. Great food, and great value.
Generally good experience. Attentive server. Food quite satisfactory.
One of our favorite restaurants in the area. Lovely small European style. Great food, service and quiet enough to talk.
Excellent food choices, great taste from all six dinners. Service has been very good all three times we have been to Jilly's. Only complaint is the music seemed a little loud at times.
Everything was delicious!
Great find! Perfect for a girls lunch and I will return
Everything was fabulous-it was a very cold Sunday night with competing football games so by the time we were into our meal we had a private seating. The food was wonderful and the staff couldn’t have been nicer.
Great food & great service make for a winning combination! We will be back!
Great food, great service by Ali in a friendly, moderately quiet setting.
The service was very good food was excellent am looking forward to returning
The menu had many appealing options.
Our waiter Ali was very knowledgeable and attentive.
We loved the ambiance.
We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner.
After wanting to try Jilly's Cafe for many years, I was disappointed. It started with a large crack in one of our water glasses. The waiter while attentive, did not provide any personality or atmosphere for our party of 6. He appeared to be in a hurry to take our order immediately after serving the drinks and appetizers. He came back several times wanting to know if we were ready to order. The restaurant was not crowded so the rush was not to turn over the table. The food was average tasting at most and very expensive. The steaks were tough. We expected an upscale experience for the price. I do not anticipate returning or recommended this restaurant.
This was our second visit whch was not as good as the first. It was New Year's Eve and it was a fixed price menu. We had appetizers, soup or salad which were good, 'for the main course we chose beef which I found to be not very tender. Presentation was very nice. Desert was excellent as were the two included glasses of chanpagne. Service was very attentive. We will go again but I thougt the price was qute high for what we had.
We were less than Statford with Jilly’s. Inasmuch as we’ve fined there before we found the service and quality lacking this evening. When chatting with the person who
Identified herself as the new owner we found her rude.
A successful family gathering.
I understand it was a New Years eve dinner and prices are a bit more expensive but the quality and pricing of the food was poor and expensive for what we received. They also rushed us through our dinner. They were not up to their regular standard.
Great evening. Food delivers again - seafood risotto (with risotto done “right” and beef & foie gras in a class of its own) and service to match (thanks to our server Ali who anticipated our needs and made the evening special).
My wife and I love Jilly’s, and we’ve been dining there for years. They finally have a full bar! Hallelujah! The wine list is extensive and moderately priced. My wife had a really good Caesar salad and I had an excellent cup of baked French onion soup. Her veal chop entree was terrific, and my seafood risotto was delicious and was loaded with more scallops and shrimp than expected! They still serve an intermezzo of Pinot noir ice, and the sweet pate spread for the bread are both special. Great service, an atmosphere very much truly Parisian, and fitting prices. Wonderful!
My three friends and I had a pre-Christmas lunch today at Jilly’s. We have all had dinner there on several occasions but seldom lunch. The food was delicious and our waiter Ali was very charming and helpful in accommodating our dietary preferences. What a wonderful way to kick off the holidays!
Jilly's has been in business for 40 years, but a few owners, the latest owners painted the outside a challenging red. Inside it's as charming as ever, the menu was good and had something each of enjoyed.
The bathroom was freezing that night. I might just be having a difficult time raving about it, because I have such fond memories, but they are over 20 years old now.
We went to dinner for my friends 50 something birthday and had a perfect evening. The music was nice but not too loud. Most of the tables were filled but not crazy busy. Ali- the waiter- was excellent. Everyone loved their food ! We had the steak su fe gras , branzino and lamb chops. Delicious!
Four of us came here tonight to celebrate one of our birthdays. The food was VERY fair, it was incredibly noisey and the service was dreadful!!!! We would have appreciated having our waters refilled (even once), our ice tea refilled without asking and reaching across the table, in front of our faces to clear every dish (instead of to our side). We waited at least 15 minutes for our credit cards to be processed when tables around us were being tended to in a much more timely manner.
Overall, an extremely disappointing experience-food and service! We would never come back nor recommend!!
I hadn't been to Jilly's Cafe in a long time, but I'm now putting it on my "go to" list. Food was delicious, generous portions, service was excellent. Lovely little restaurant. Some people tell me they don't go because of the difficulty with parking, but there is free parking after 6 PM and all day Saturday and Sunday right next door to the north at the Heart Auto Repair Center.
Lovely cozy place with good food. Excellent for conversation. Attentive service.
Jilly’s dependable fine food is diminished by the poor ambiance. This is a French restaurant for goodness sakes.
The server/owner is dressed very casually (flannel looking shirt and jeans) instead of the “French look” black pants and crisp white shirt. Background music has no French tunes, no Edith Piaf, and even has a few Hispanic songs.
This lack of attention to these details will, or already is, costing Jilly’s some of its most loyal clientele.
