Jeanne D'Arc - Cornell Hotel De France Ratings and Reviews
We really loved this restaurant. The menu is pris fixe; there was one soup of the day, then we got to choose one each from three appetizers, quite a number of mains, and three desserts. I had duck; my husband had lamb shank - both very good. The wait staff was friendly but professional, the food and the unique decor French, and the atmosphere very pleasant. We enjoyed it thoroughly and would certainly go back.
My third time here in several years and once more OUTSTANDING! There were four of us with entrees of Rack of Lamb, the Filet, Beef Bourginon and Scallops and Shrimp. Every one was simply perfect.
We raved about the food so much that our server brought the chef out and we got pictures with him.
The Grand Marnier Souffle is one of the three best desserts in my lifetime! If I lived in San Francisco, I'd be there every month.
How do they ever produce four courses of such incredible food for $48? And the corkage fee of $18 is certainly reasonable.
The atmosphere is magical. You feel you are in an old Parisian Restaurant.
The food is French and outstanding, reasonably priced, with great French wines that are also reasonably priced. It is a price fix menu, cincluding soup, salad, entre, and even a outstanding Grand Marnier Soufle for desert!
Also you can talk. It is quiet.
It is one of our favorite Restaurants in San Francisco.
Luscious French Food, Attentive Service & Fascinating Underground Setting**
I had the rack of lamb, Carré D'agneau Des Alpages, & my companion had the salmon, Saumon Epernay. Both were cooked to perfection, plated nicely & tasted grande. Our four course, $48 prix fixe dinner began with potato leek soup, with escargot & a fish terrine as the second course. Upon learning that my companion would decline dessert, our server presented a lovely salad. I had the Soufflé au Grand Marnier, accompanied by a mini pitcher of sweetened cream. Wonderful.
Our server was friendly & welcoming. His attentiveness was appreciated & a bit surprising, as he ran the entire floor! A few table away, we could hear an older priest in French conversation.
The restaurant was created in the underground of the Cornell Hotel de France. From the sidewalk, the facade is narrow---in the best European tradition--- and draped in white lights, greenery, the French, American & Fleur de Lys flags. Walking past the small, neatly appointed lobby on your right, you descend to the subterranean level, push open a thick dark brown wooden door and enter Jeanne D'Arc. The walls are pale yellow and have hand painted art, often with gold leaf, themed around Joan of Arc. There's back lit stained glass windows, exposed wood, statues, broad swords, armor--well, you get the idea! It's abbey-like and museum-like in style. Yet, it's warm and welcoming. I understand that the restaurant occasionally hosts special programs & sometimes has live music.
I highly recommend this hidden jewel for its good food, value, unusual setting & friendly service!
This reservation was a long time coming. I had made and then cancelled several in the months past. My girlfriend's birthday weekend was coming up and this time was the charm! What a beautiful place, it reminded me of my visit to Paris last year, the ambiance was so great that I wish to return to both the restaurant and to Paris. The meal and service was exquisite. Having enjoyed many 4-5 course meals at other restaurants, I can add that this was truly the very best.
Excellent food, generous portions, warm, accommodating, unintrusive yet attentive service, delightful ambience. Lovely violin music performed by Francine supplied a romantic background for Saturday night. This was my 2nd visit, 1st time for the 4 others. One was a picky eater, & particularly fond of French cuisine. She loved the food! We shared the escargot, foie gras, & the shrimp & mango salad. Her husband enjoyed the spinach salad and his steak. My friend had the lamb shank, I had the duck confit. The others had fish & the steak. As the dining room filled, we did not feel cramped nor did the buzz of conversation and music make it uncomfortable or difficult to hear one another talk. Desserts from the soufflés to the pear cake and apple tart imparted a sweet and satisfying ending. A beautiful hidden gem.
In the basement of a tender nob boutique hotel. Table full of french people sitting behind us, so that was the first positive sign. There simply was not a bad item on the menu. Must call out the Escargot, Beef Bourguignon, Chocolate Mousse and the simply sublime Souffle. RESERVATIONS Highly Recommended.
What a lovely find! My husband and I went there with our adult kids for Christmas dinner (on Dec. 27th). Cozy and romantic setting, with warm stenciled walls and French inspired art and accessories. The service was attentive and good. We brought our own wine and they did not charge a corkage fee! And the food was outstanding! Four courses, all sized well (not too much, but also not tiny little portions). Some of us had the rabbit, some the lamb, and some the Coquille St Jacques, and everyone loved their choices. The Grand Marnier souffle was delicious as well! We were thoroughly stuffed when we left, and I will definitely return. $49 for four courses in San Francisco is reasonable indeed!
The food was exceptional! The service was responsive and pleasant. The cost for our party of 4 was quite reasonable! This is a definitely a come back to spot. I would highly recommend this to anyone coming to the City and looking for a restaurant near Union Square.
Everything about this restaurant shines. From the quaint hotel entrance, to the dining room itself - it's easy to imagine yourself in Paris.
The food is 5 star French with outstanding service. I would be willing to say that there is not a better value in San Francisco (this coming from an S.F. native). A four course prix fixe for $48 of that caliber in S.F. is unheard of. Numerous wonderful entree's to choose from and the pinnacle of the meal coming at dessert with an individual Grand Marnier Souffle - spectacular.
This was our 5th time at Jeanne D'Arc and we continue to entertain our friends there. There is never a let-down. The food is always wonderful.
Jeanne D'Arc is simply fun. The architecture as well as the whimsical frescoes on the walls transport you to medieval France. There's no shortage of Jeanne D'Arc memorabilia. The 4 courses for $48 were very tasty--squash soup, salad, fresh salmon with potatoes and green beans, not to mention the outstanding souffle. The service was very friendly and efficient.
