Jean Farris Winery & Bistro

We had date night at Jean Farris on Friday. We each tried one of the “special” cocktails that were featured for the weekend. Our “Blue Hawaiians” were colorful, delicious and refreshing. A perfect summertime drink. Brennan is a great bartender! We also had a lovely white wine with dinner that we have had before and is one of our favorites.
The kitchen outdid themselves on our meals that night. The vegan in group had a meal that was both beautiful in its presentation and delicious. A creative salad with homegrown tomatoes and peppers, grilled pineapple, spring greens and a special citrus dressing. It was crowned by the top of a pineapple that was filled with sautéed mushroom and celery. Fabulous! The carnivore had the filet that was perfectly cooked along with the sides. This was a wonderful evening and we will be back! Thanks to all the staff who added to our experience.
Jean Farris is our “date night” place to go. It’s a relaxing and open venue. The service is terrific, and Jean herself is a delight. The bar offers wonderful specialty cocktails, and the wines are very good. The menu is limited, but it very good, especially the meat dishes. It really is the only vineyard experience with a full restaurant for miles around, so it’s fun to visit.
This place is an absolute gem! Friendly service, delicious food, and an incredible ambiance! The dog friendliness is also a huge plus for me!! Totally impressed with my visit and I will definitely be returning many more times! Well done!
We dine here a couple times a year and have always enjoyed it. Tonight fell far short of not only our expectations but those established over the past few years. Took 15 minutes to get our drinks. The butcher board came sans one of the meats. Had to ask about the specials ourselves. The server gave us buns, then claimed they didn’t have any butter on premises - seriously no butter at a restaurant, and the entrees were simply passable. Meat was entirely over cooked and dry. Kind of felt like we were getting the bottom of the barrel scraps it being Sunday afternoon. Don’t blame the server, as she was the only one working the entire place, but it was a confused, lackluster evening. Hope they figure out whatever is going on because this has always been a great place to have a quiet enjoyable dinner but this evening was one to forget.
Excellent food as always! Lobster pappadelle was amazing! Wish chairs were a bit more comfortable at bar and out on patio to encourage us to linger.
We have been to Jean Farris several times and always enjoy the wine. This time the wine was still good but the steak was tough and undercooked and the breads were very dry. We noticed the other guests must have had similar assessment of the breads since every table had the breads left uneaten on the tables. This may have been an exception because other meals here were quite a bit better.
We were so looking forward to eating here. My husband and I had been to a tasting here and wanted to bring our friends for dinner. The menu sounded great on their website but unfortunately did not deliver. Without being specific about our complaints, our main one was that the owner ( or manager) did not come to our table to address our issues. The servers were apologetic and did what they could. I hope the owner reads this. 😀 They did take off the cost of my dinner.
I wish good food wasn’t so expensive, $28 for 5 scallops with veggies is too much! $5.60 for each scallop is extreme! I know overhead is included in the price.
But it was excellent, and I will go back as I can afford it. Staff was very pleasant and attractive.
Great food and staff.
Food was pretty good. Service was decent, our waitress was very nice person. Dishes dirty, table was a pain as it was off balance and could only set things in certain areas, and out of wine we requested.
Wonderful as always! JF is a jewel in the country.
Service and meal were excellent never had a bad meal here.
Great food and great service!
Reservations at 630. Plenty of tables. Set us at one with direct blinding sun. Moved to a table that had a huge spider web between wall and table. We knocked that down. I look over and the spider is in my friends hair. Brushed it into drunk menu and squashed it. Staff very under dressed black t shirts and torn Jean shorts. One had a very soiled t shirt. My meal was good. The truffle fries were cold and very few with husbandd burger. For the price I expected a more upscale atmosphere.
Unfortunately, this trip to Jean Farris was not a good experience. We have eaten there several times, and have always been happy with our dinner. The setting was lovely, as well as our drinks. Our dinner was very disappointing though. We ordered the bbq chicken, and the French burger. The chicken was a white chicken breast that had not been grilled. It was extremely bland. It was served on a huge amount of grits. They were sticky and sweet. The entree was served with very little bbq sauce.
The burger was served on a white bun that clearly came from a pkg of Sunny Buns. It came with a white piece of cheese, and some cooked onions. Nothing else. It was served with six under baked potato wedges. That had nothing on them. We have eaten the parmesan truffle fries in the past, that were delicious! These were terrible. We decided not to order dessert, based on our dinner. We are so sad to have spent so much money on such disappointing food. And even sadder that we’ve lost our “fancy dinner” spot. Definitely not a $78 meal.
Delicious food and great environment!
Understaffed. Couldnt get a drink. We never recieved bread service while everyone around us did. Food was mediocre.
I’m sorry you didn’t enjoy your recent visit to Jean Farris, I believe it was all in the timing. I see you arrived at 4:49 on Sunday afternoon which is during the peak of our busiest Happy Hour time. Jean Farris is one of the only area bars to offer discounted drinks over the weekend for Happy Hour so it does get extremely busy, loud, and carry a party type atmosphere. Many guest really enjoy it. If you are in the mood for a romantic quite evening I recommend a post 6pm reservation.
Excellent food and service; particularly the local cheeses. Completely unique experience similar to a Napa valley restaurant but just a few minutes from downtown Lexington, Kentucky.
Always wonderful experience ... Enjoy the food staff and absolutely love the wine
We hoped for a beautiful night out on the Jean Farris patio but thunderstorms prevented it. The food was amazing as always, I had the bourbon pork with white beans and jalapeño cornbread and my date enjoyed the scallops. The Scallops were seared perfectly. Looking forward to our next visit.
Scheduled to celebrate an Anniversary, this diner became a nightmare with live cops arrest in the restaurant, our order "lost" in the kitchen and finally 2 "recovery" entrees served with bad food (burned fried beans and cold shrimps!).
This was a disaster!
We requested outdoor seating but were not accommodated even though there were very few guests seated outside. Server was not exceptional. The cheese appetizer was excellent. Both entrees we ordered (pork and fish) were outstanding and delicious.
Views and setting are always great. The filet was not a good cut of meat and no seasoning. Mashed potatoes were lumpy and no seasoning. Lamb shank was ok. Overall, not near the experience we are used to and not worth the price.
The service, food, and setting were excellent. A fun plus was being able to look out and see groundhog waddle about and a beautiful Robin tending to it’s recently hatched chicks.
The food was devoid of any taste.
Chef Nate never disappoints! I have Celiac disease and must eat gluten free. Chef Nate insures delicious gf options are available without fear of cross contamination. I had the chicken wings as an appetizer, my wife started with the BLT Salad. We both had the Sea Scallops as our entre, my side dishes were modified to include gf items. Brennan gave us excellent service, going to the kitchen to ask about gf options several times.
Mixed review. For a party of ten, I realize that presents a challenge to get all the entrees on the table...but we waited over an hour for our food and then some meals were very good, some were dried out and over cooked. Our wait staff was nice and friendly, but no one checked to see if our entrees were prepared correctly. Also, the setting sun was hitting two people at our table in the face and made the first half hour of our meal uncomfortable. A window shade, or even moving our table as there was plenty of room, would have been preferable to having two of our party sitting with a menu to shade their eyes for a half hour would have been good. Again, wait staff was nice and friendly but their only suggestion was to wait until the sun set. Our party had a great time together, but instead of the food and service enhancing our evening it was just “meh.”
We had the scallops and halibut. The risotto was outstanding. Nice to see that you now offer a selection of wines other than JF. Had been awhile but is now definitely on our rotation again. As good as any meal we have had in Lexington in a while. Well worth the money.
What a lovely evening. We had come to Lexington to attend a concert. Never been there before. We found this winery/bistro online and it was perfect. It has a beautiful, rural setting and a terrific menu. The chef came out and chatted with us, and we learned a lot about the food and area. We had a wine and cheese flight. Delicious.
Our server was the best part. She was awesome and made the meal a great experience.
We had the pleasure of dining at Jean Farris Winery this past weekend with 5 friends from out of town. It was a lovely evening in the country and a perfect introduction to the beauty of Kentucky in late spring for our guests. Our wine was refreshing and spot on for a warm Friday night. The two of us who have dined at JF before both had a delicious meal - which is our norm. Our 5 guests shared 2 orders of the scotch egg and deemed it delicious! They also all ordered the halibut dish and declared it fabulous and that they would return just to have that same dish again. We always look forward to introducing new people to this winery/bistro. We will definitely be back! Thank you to all the staff who helped make this a great experience.
Go to restaurant for special occasions. Went for our anniversary and were pleased as always with the food, wine, and service. Filet was perfectly cooked and scallops were delicious. Service was friendly and timely without being bothersome. Love the laid back atmosphere with the sophisticated dining .
Was in the mood today, for a great brunch, which I wouldn't have to prepare; Jean Farris seemed the ideal spot, for my first weekend off in 3 months. I had almost forgotten how serene and relaxing it was, to spend a sunny afternoons on the patio, or simply sit at the bar, and sample the extensive selection of wine, while enjoying a well prepared meal.
For those of you, who have only thought of Jean Farris as a winery and dinner destination, you should make a point of heading out early, on a Saturday or Sunday, to enjoy one of the best brunch options in Lexington. I had the opportunity to sample my first ever, goose egg omelette, with house made sausage, and a side of shrimp and grits. If that sounds like a lot of food...it was, and I left full and satisfied. Passed up on the wine this time, to enjoy a bloody Mary, with their house spice mix. Just enough hot, but not so much to be overbearing. The cocktails they serve, are as good or better, than any other high end restaurant in town; and moderately priced as well.
As a business owner myself, I appreciate the hard work, that goes into running a successful, family owned restaurant, and always enjoy spending a few minutes talking with the owner, and occasionally the chef. And if you are making plans for this summer, the tomato plants are soon to be in the ground, for the highly desired, tomato sampler, appetizer plate, to be served later this summer. Looking forward to it.
If you are looking for a loud and sterile environment, for a party of 20, and want nothing more than to throw back some beer, cheap cocktails, and wings, then head to BW3's. If you are in the mood for something a little more inviting, and worthy of bringing a certain someone for a perfect night out (maybe even a special evening for Mom), then Jean Farris is the direction you should head.
The sever was the owner and was great! Their custom cocktails were really good. The filet was delicious. We will definitely be back.
Kitchen was having some problems. Some of the dishes were cool (not cold). The wine we ordered was not available because they were working on the equipment it was stored in? Never got the cheese plate we ordered. I have eated here before and it was good.
We had a wonderful time. It was very pretty out there and the food was delicious. We really enjoyed the wine too.
Fantastic evening with a gorgeous sunset view from the patio at Jean Farris. We arrived early to enjoy happy hour cocktails half price then a well deserved relaxing meal on their patio. We started with an appetizer of Nate’s Wings which we both enjoyed followed by two orders of scallops that came perfectly prepared. Our meal ended with a French Press of coffee for two with an order of Blackberry Cobbler with Vanilla Ice Cream. Excellent service and enjoyable wines. I would highly recommend.
We had a lovely time at Jean Farris Winery and Bistro the other night. We have been enjoying the weekly special craft cocktails. They are always innovative and tasty and often something we had not had occasion to try before. During the warm weather we really like the JF Riesling wine. It is so refreshing. The spring menu has been very tasty. The chef takes special effort to prepare our (sometimes) unusual requests to our liking. The staff is always friendly and inviting. During this beautiful May the scenery in the countryside is beautiful and it is nice to linger with a post dinner glass of wine. We will definitely return.
Service was awful....Server didn’t know much about the menu, was preoccupied with other staff, we had to ask for dishes to be removed and water refills several times,, loved to call me “honey”, and worst of all over charged us by adding a meal we didn’t have....with not much of an apology. It was a prix fixe menu @$40 a pop and there was 7 of us so there was an auto 20% tip. I’m a 20% tipper 9 of 10 times but it’s like the waitress had never served professionally before. Food was marginal at best but the service is that bad. Too bad bc we’ve been before and while the experience has never been great.....this was the last visit.
