Friends in town from back East
All of the staff were gracious and helpful. Food was exquisite, was served in a timely fashion. Would definitely go again!
Sat outside on picnic table. Had a great time. Only opportunity for improvement would be to invest in the outdoor dining experience.
We love Jax! The team is always friendly, patient, and welcoming, and the seafood (all the food) is consistently fresh and delicious. It’s our go-to for birthdays, report card meals, or any time we need an oyster fix!
The food was excellent as was the atmosphere and our waiter.
Always an enjoyable experience. We have a tradition of hosting our anniversary dinner here and it never disappoints. Just a gem.
Great food, nice atmosphere. Prefect easy seafood stop. Great way to enjoy the Boulder atmosphere
The Oysters were excellent and I love the happy hour even though it’s really early
Awesome as always. Starting with friendly hello and staff at the front door. Fresh shucked oysters, peel and eat shrimp, mussels with extra bread for dipping in the sauce. Wonderful to have same professional and attentive server as last time (Sean). As I refer to Jax "My Happy Place". See you again soon.
Amazing oysters and red snapper. Mac was fantastic and helpful. We’re so happy that we can keep going back to Jax!
We love Jax and go there for the fresh oysters. Unfortunately, after we were seated, we were told they were fresh out of oysters. Boo! :( That's all we went there for, but we made the best of it and ordered other items from the menu. They were delicious for sure, but I missed the oysters. I guess that's when you know they definitely have the freshest out there. So, we'll be back, very soon, to have oysters. But...we'll call first to make sure they aren't out! :) On the flip side, I didn't think our cocktails were very good so will make sure I choose differently next time. Our server was awesome as were the other staff we encountered!
With 70+% of adults vaccinated in Boulder, it's finally time to return to our favorite restaurants. Jax rates as our go-to destination for birthdays and other special occasions. Positively the best seafood in Colorado. The wife had a small wedge and crab cake. "Absolutely creamy and tasty!" I had a half-dozen Emersum oysters, plump, sweet, tasty. The seafood chowder (which is made to order) had several mussels, clams, salmon, two plump shrimp, potatoes, carrots, chunks of bacon, and okra. The clams weren't the usual tiny, tough chunks of rubber, but actually were sweet and tender. The bacon chunks and okra turned a work-a-day standard special. The salad-of-the-sea was outstanding, squid, octopus, and shrimp, with small sliced garden cucumbers, heirloom tomatoes, cashews, and jalapeno slices and a ginger vinaigrette. Do you remember the old classic crab or seafood Louie salad dressing, with mayo, Worcestershire sauce and Tabasco or the southern dressings with mayo and Old Bay seasoning? A bit heavy for the modern era. The salad-of-the-sea's ginger vinaigrette is nice and light, but the fresh jalapeno slices were reminders of the old classics with a little heat.
As for the space, Jax has tables outdoors, but we had early reservations and it was still quite sunny and warm. Even though we prefer outdoors these days, we sat indoors. Except for the wet-and-raw bar, where people were packed closely together on bar stools, the remainder of the restaurant space was nicely socially spaced and well ventilated.
This was our first time to Jax and we were WOWED!! Everything was top notch, from the greeting when we arrived, to the amazing food and service, ending with appreciation for our patronage when we left. The casual atmosphere almost belies the food itself. It was extraordinary. The best was the chef's special, red snapper, small diced potatoes with onions and herbs, charred broccolini and grilled lemon. We can't wait to return soon!
The experience was good overall. My wife had the red snapper and I had the scallops. The snapper was great and the scallops were ok. It came with some pork belly that was very very salty. Everything else was good and the service was great.
The chowder was worth every penny. It was rich and filling. I would go back for the chowder.
Thank you, Sean! The Red Snapper Special last night was superb!
Everything, from drinks to appetizers to entrees, was delicious. Best crab cakes we’ve ever had! Also, our server was outstanding. The outside dining was so nice on the pleasant evening we were there.
Chewy calamari at a fish house? Service and food was lackluster. It was a very rushed experience for a Sunday evening
the table outside was fine. less noise. excellent service, good food.
We thoroughly enjoyed this birthday dinner. Everything was excellent. We had the Salad of the Sea appetizer which was delicious. Then we had 6 oysters on the half shell, which were fresh and yummy. I had the Blue Crab Garganelli which was outstanding. It was spicy, but not too spicy that it overwhelmed the crab, well-balanced, just delicious. My boyfriend had the Grilled Hawaiian Yellowfin Tuna Steak which was also amazing. It melted in our mouths and the sauce was really great. Both my Cucumber Lemon Press cocktail and the non-alcoholic strawberry lemonade were also fresh and delicious. For dessert I had the Key Lime Tart, which was wonderful, although I would've preferred it with a pastry crust instead of the graham cracker crust - but that's a small quibble. My boyfriend had the Flourless Chocolate Cake, which was amazing. Just a super delicious, enjoyable meal. It was not cheap, but we did not expect it to be. The service was great and we thought the experience was worth the price.
The food and service are perfect. Love the outdoor dining!
The food was excellent....and so was the service. We sat outside on a sunny late afternoon and there were not enough umbrellas to cover all the tables, which made it a bit uncomfortable....and some umbrellas tipped over in the breeze. Other establishments seemed to have better setups for outdoor dining.
One of our favorite places to eat when Visiting Colorado. Food is always excellent, and service is very attentive. The salmon last night was some of the best I’ve had.
We were seated outside as there is not enough tables outside. Unfortunately, it was 90 degrees and in direct sunlight. The umbrella did not cover the entire table, a wooden picnic table.
The oysters were fresh and delicious. The Caesar Salad was sparce but good with sardines. My entrée, salmon was very good and served oddly over lentils. My wife's scallops were good but the dish was too salty and the vegetables over seared and inedible. The Gelato was very good. Overall, for the high prices, we can do better elsewhere.
We ate outdoors as expected. Jax needs to provide better umbrellas or other sun protection. A neighbor restaurant seemed to have far better shade for its patrons. Otherwise the food and and service were very good.
Felt rushed and chaotic, and the food was good but not as amazing as it has been in the past. Caesar salad was swimming in dressing. I know with fewer tables they must be counting on faster turn-over for business, but it would be nice to be able to enjoy a relaxed meal and not get all our courses piled on top of one another!
Outstanding food and service. We were mislead by the very casual appearance of Jax and wondered if the cuisine would live up to the menu descriptions. It did and far surpassed our expectations. The prices are high but the quality is even higher. We shared the Seafood Salad, which seemed pricey at $18 and looked skimpy, but the calamari, octopus, shrimp, and the extraordinary sesame-encrusted cashews were worth every dollar. Unusual and delicious. The salads were also very good. The entrees were exceptional, both the halibut and the tuna, very fresh, flavorful and accompanied by excellent vegetables. Service was also noteworthy, the waiter, the person who poured the water, and another server were all knowledgeable and friendly. It took awhile between courses, but we were outside and it was very pleasant. The only downside was the wooden picnic tables with benches that were terribly uncomfortable. Bring a cushion and you will have a perfect evening. The Chef is a star!
Fresh fish, good service, right on Pearl. Literally- we sat outside and it was superb.
We reserved Jax for a special birthday dinner for 6 and were seated outdoors on an uncomfortable picnic table where it started sprinkling (and threatened rain). We asked to move to the open table next to us with an umbrella and were told that was reserved special!? You have to reserve the umbrella? Then, that table sat open the whole time we had dinner. The staff were all unhelpful. The overpriced food was good but not great. We will not be back.
Repeat customer. Love the food and service.
I Love Jax! The perfect celebration with Champagne and Oysters!
Great attentive service, wonderful community.
Thank you Jax for hanging in there during the pandemic shutdown.
As always, a fantastic dining experience all-around. We’ve been enjoying Jax since July 1998 and keep coming back. The house limoncello is pretty special and we enjoyed learning about the process.
Delicious and expert service! Can’t wait to go back.
I’ve eaten at Jax multiple times. Service and food are consistently excellent. A delightful and delicious menu is offered with casual ambience and professional service . It’s always a fun and wonderful food experience. It’s hard to make a choice because their menu is inventive, varied, and beautifully prepared and presented.
Wonderful dinner and fantastic service. Enjoyed eating outside at the picnic tables. Great food!
We love, love Jax’s. The Oysters are so fresh and they always have a great happy hour. This time they also had a great vegan dish for a main meal and since I am trying to go more plant based, this was much appreciated! My husband’s ahi tuna was very delicious. We also ordered a non dairy dessert snd this was also much appreciated. It was a mint ganache ice cream.
The music was WAY too loud and had a driving bass line going throughout. Appropriate for a bar, but it really detracted from the otherwise good experience. I guess JAX has the formula worked out and this is what some people want, but not me. When I am eating a nice dinner, I don’t want the windows rattling from the sound system.
It’s always a reliably great experience and this dinner was no different! Service is exceptional, food was amazing, drinks were delish. Thanks for taking great care of us!
