Japonessa Sushi Cocina Ratings and Reviews
I have been wanting to dine at Japonessa for some time and arranged to meet a friend there who I haven’t seen in awhile. Our server was wonderful and guided us through the menu. Unfortunately there were many many fruit flies flying everywhere. She moved us to another part of the restaurant where they wouldn’t be as bad but we still had about 20 flies landing on our food and flying around our heads. People at a table near us were swatting them around their heads. Our server said she’s not allowed to use the flyswatter when diners are there. It was gross and disgusting. Not going back ever.
There is a real fruit fly problem, there were so many and we even moved seats to get away from them but they were on the walls and the bathroom smelled like BO. Additionally I got the sashimi salad and there were 4 little pieces of sashimi and just a ton of mixed greens so I got an additional order of sashimi. We spent $100 and it was not worth it.
Overall the food and service was great as always. The only complaint was we had a couple of small fruit flies hovering over our food and keep shushing them away. Nothing the restaurant can do but that was the only inconvenience. We said towards the back wall.
Went for a birthday dinner with my wife. We heard great things and we love Umi and Momiji, so I’m disappointed in our experience. We were sat in the back left corner of the restaurant. Restaurant was too loud, lighting too bright, odd mix of business accounts, under dressed tourists and locals, service was quite terrible, and food was just ok. We ordered three rolls. The rolls were very rice-y, if that makes sense. The ratio of rice to fish was off. Overall, it was the ambiance and the service that will keep us from a second visit.
We were visiting Seattle and decided to meet up with two good friends for late lunch. This is the first time we’ve eaten here, although we’ve eaten sushi many times before, some dishes here were unfamiliar. We relied so much on the waiter’s recommendations and we found all his recommendations delicious. The service was excellent. We did not mind the noise level, Asian restaurants tend to be noisy, so we were all used to it. To me, it is a sign of good food and comfortable environment.
Try the streetfighter II roll, the cherry sake, the Union roll, the Albacore tataki salad... I eat sushi quite often and Japonessa has many creative flavor blends that make me drool for more! Nice atmosphere for a casual sitting or even a date. The staff are knowledgable!
Everything about Japonessa was great except for 2 things. They didn't have my Open Table reservation on file (I had a confirmation e-mail) and there were quite a few bugs flying around our group of tables in the back. That took away from the experience overall.
We had a great beer (Octoberfest) and the Last Samuri Roll was exceptional. Our server was the best we have had anyplace and made the evening even better. It was busy and the noise level a little high yet our reservation was honored and we went straight to a table upon arriving. Will definitely go back!
Happy hour deals are good, food quality is good, and decor is good. Service is outstanding. I was so impressed with the PATIENCE that our server had. One of the people in my party got to the restaurant 1 hour earlier than the reservation and they let her sit and sip on a beer and study at the table until the rest of us got there at the scheduled time. Also at the end of the night, our party lingered and chatted after the bill had come and our server never seemed irritated or trying to hurry us out even though the restaurant was getting really busy. I so appreciated that he gave us space to converse and enjoy ourselves despite the hustle and bustle of the restaurant. Wish I remembered his name!!
Made a reservation, I would recommend doing so. Good food and decent service, drinks are always filled without asking. Waitress seemed spread thin and spent little time with us, not a huge deal but it gave the sense of urgency as she did everything fast. She was very good about checking on us when the food came out.
Really nice decor and ambiance. It’s usually busy here for dinner regardless of the day. The food is good but not great. Every roll seems very similar on paper but when it comes out you definitely can taste the difference. I love their vegetarian roll options. The octopus app has great flavor and creativity but the actual octopus needs work, as it was too tough.
Please note that the tip is included in the bill:
Food was good. Service attentive. We were able to get out in time to catch our movie.
My only complaint is that no one told us there was a 20% service charge already added, and the credit card sheet had a line for gratuity.
At the Tom Douglas restaurants, more than one person always tells us about the service charge, and on the credit card slip there’s a spot to sign but not add a tip.
I consider that to be a best practice and would like to see Japonessa adopt it.
First I want to say that I absolutely love Japonessa. I am always pleased with whatever I order and the overall experience is great. I recently celebrated my work anniversary and was taken out for a celebratory lunch with my supervisor and co-worker. Our entire experience was ruined because we spent the entire time swatting at flies and fanning them away from our food.
I, in no way blame the restaurant for this happening because sometimes.....flies get in. I did however wish that our waitress would have at least offered us a different table. I wanted the people that came with me to love Japonessa just as much as I "still" do but I'm afraid that their experience might have a negative impact on them wanting to come back.
I however, will still come back because this one experience pales in comparison to all the great experiences I've had there.
