Japonessa Sushi Cocina Ratings and Reviews
After reading all the rave reviews I was disappointed by the underwhelming food. The highlights of the family were the warm miso soup and edamame. Ordering the Casanova and Crunchy Seattle roll was a mistake. Both were heavily covered in sauce and it was hard to even decipher to taste of the fish. I think when it comes to sushi simplicity and the quality of the fish shouldn’t be overshadowed by the dressing, which was the case for the food we ordered. As Seattle is known for having some of the freshest seafood I was surprised that the chefs didn’t let the natural flavors of the food shine. There is a mandatory gratuity fee of twenty percent and interaction with the wait staff was pretty terse. The employees didn’t seem to be happy. I would come back for happy hour only.
Sushi is good, interesting and fun, but fish was not exceptional. They were very busy and despite the fact that we had a reservation rushed us through very quickly without much attention or interest. Gave the impression of trying to get the table open again ASAP.
I got to introduce 3 friends to Japonessa and they all loved it. Our server, Megan, was great in telling us what was safe/gluten-free for the two of us who needed that information. As always, the happy hour menu had something for everyone. I just wish there were more cooked items that aren't coated with flour or had regular soy sauce in the marinade...I remember so many items I used to love (before finding out about my intolerance).
Service here is always excellent. Staff is super friendly, very helpful.
It is a very popular place, so there is a bit of a wait for seating w/o a reservation, and food service can get backed up, but the place is always packed when I go so it is to be expected.
This place is way over rated and over priced. The sushi was pretty good-- fish tasted fresh-- but the rolls we're not good. Too much sauce and other stuff so you couldn't taste the fish. Also the rolls were rolled really poorly with extra rice in inside the roll. That's what you do when you're trying to skip on the fish. Also, we always get A bottle of Nigori sake from our usual hole in the wall sushi place at home in California. Our server told us they no long offer the bottles but a karafe type thing instead. This seemed a little shady and especially so once we tasted it and it was clear they had mixed it cheap sake with the good stuff. At $30 a karafe this is particularly lame. We pay about $12 for our actual bottle at home.
What a delight! From the engaging staff through the delectable morsels of marine proteins to the final sip of Sake, the entire experience worked for me. While I am a foodie, I don't have much experience with Sushi. Japonessa is going to change that! I'm making reservations for an afternoon happy hour tour of more palate stimulating experiences. I'm not a fan of mandatory gratuities, but I would have happily left the 20% were it not compulsory. More images available at sound-images.net
High energy restaurant! Definitely not quiet so probably not great for a romantic dinner but great for other occasions. Wait staff was helpful, present when you needed them but not hovering. The food was excellent...probably the best sushi rolls I've ever had! Glad I had reservations as It was packed.
We've made Japonessa a tradition before performances at Seattle Opera. With nice weather (like Saturday), we walk from the restaurant to Seattle Center and McCaw Hall.
Belly Sampler, Tres Diablos, and California Crunch, all washed down with sake' and a Lemon Drop. De-lish!
