Japonessa Sushi Cocina Ratings and Reviews
Happy hour deals are good, food quality is good, and decor is good. Service is outstanding. I was so impressed with the PATIENCE that our server had. One of the people in my party got to the restaurant 1 hour earlier than the reservation and they let her sit and sip on a beer and study at the table until the rest of us got there at the scheduled time. Also at the end of the night, our party lingered and chatted after the bill had come and our server never seemed irritated or trying to hurry us out even though the restaurant was getting really busy. I so appreciated that he gave us space to converse and enjoy ourselves despite the hustle and bustle of the restaurant. Wish I remembered his name!!
Made a reservation, I would recommend doing so. Good food and decent service, drinks are always filled without asking. Waitress seemed spread thin and spent little time with us, not a huge deal but it gave the sense of urgency as she did everything fast. She was very good about checking on us when the food came out.
Really nice decor and ambiance. It’s usually busy here for dinner regardless of the day. The food is good but not great. Every roll seems very similar on paper but when it comes out you definitely can taste the difference. I love their vegetarian roll options. The octopus app has great flavor and creativity but the actual octopus needs work, as it was too tough.
Please note that the tip is included in the bill:
Food was good. Service attentive. We were able to get out in time to catch our movie.
My only complaint is that no one told us there was a 20% service charge already added, and the credit card sheet had a line for gratuity.
At the Tom Douglas restaurants, more than one person always tells us about the service charge, and on the credit card slip there’s a spot to sign but not add a tip.
I consider that to be a best practice and would like to see Japonessa adopt it.
First I want to say that I absolutely love Japonessa. I am always pleased with whatever I order and the overall experience is great. I recently celebrated my work anniversary and was taken out for a celebratory lunch with my supervisor and co-worker. Our entire experience was ruined because we spent the entire time swatting at flies and fanning them away from our food.
I, in no way blame the restaurant for this happening because sometimes.....flies get in. I did however wish that our waitress would have at least offered us a different table. I wanted the people that came with me to love Japonessa just as much as I "still" do but I'm afraid that their experience might have a negative impact on them wanting to come back.
I however, will still come back because this one experience pales in comparison to all the great experiences I've had there.
This place was slammed! The entry way is awkward and loud. Our server had an attitude; perhaps because they were so busy; it felt as if she was trying to get us out of there. I’ll be sending an email to the Manager as they automatically add 20% gratuity to the tab. Happy to give all the other staff 20%; too bad for them our server had such an attitude as I most likely would have tipped even more for such delicious food.
So the spice level is real. The three peppers REALLY spiced- it's not like ho-hum spicy. It is really hot and this is coming from someone who eats spicy food.
The rolls we had were spectacular- expensive? I am not sure because there is so much food that I think it was well worth the price. 20% service fee is always added to your bill. It is a bit tight - tables are a bit close together.
We had spicy and even spicier rolls. Would recommend if you are looking for sushi with a Latin flavor and HEAT!!! Real heat!
Japonesa is always crowded and with good reason. So many delicious sushi and sashimi choices, so many rolls, such reasonable prices. This is a large and somewhat noisy restaurant with lots of people coming and going. It's always interesting to look about and I always leave satisfied. The servers are friendly and helpful and service is prompt.
After reading all the rave reviews I was disappointed by the underwhelming food. The highlights of the family were the warm miso soup and edamame. Ordering the Casanova and Crunchy Seattle roll was a mistake. Both were heavily covered in sauce and it was hard to even decipher to taste of the fish. I think when it comes to sushi simplicity and the quality of the fish shouldn’t be overshadowed by the dressing, which was the case for the food we ordered. As Seattle is known for having some of the freshest seafood I was surprised that the chefs didn’t let the natural flavors of the food shine. There is a mandatory gratuity fee of twenty percent and interaction with the wait staff was pretty terse. The employees didn’t seem to be happy. I would come back for happy hour only.
Sushi is good, interesting and fun, but fish was not exceptional. They were very busy and despite the fact that we had a reservation rushed us through very quickly without much attention or interest. Gave the impression of trying to get the table open again ASAP.
I got to introduce 3 friends to Japonessa and they all loved it. Our server, Megan, was great in telling us what was safe/gluten-free for the two of us who needed that information. As always, the happy hour menu had something for everyone. I just wish there were more cooked items that aren't coated with flour or had regular soy sauce in the marinade...I remember so many items I used to love (before finding out about my intolerance).
