Janko's Little Zagreb Ratings and Reviews
Great place to get a good steak - my favorite in Bloomington for sure. My wife gets the kebab and I usually go for the sirloin - they always nail her well-done tastes as well as my desire for an unabashedly rare cut of beef. The meatballs are a must if you like spicy food. Very attentive service as well.
We took a business partner there for dinner and our reservation was for 6:30 pm After 8:00 or so most patrons had left but we were still eating and conducting business. Around 8:30 pm our waitress came up to tell us a water pipe broke and they were going to have to shut off the water and there would be no restroom. Around 8:45 pm some one on staff turned the lights on and off a couple of times as a way of telling us to get out. Granted we might have been the last table to leave but it wasn't even 9:00 pm. I was appalled because we were hosting someone important and from out of town for dinner.
Iconic Bloomington spot for great steaks especially before or after a game. Get your IU on! Steaks are served with a basic salad and baked potato. Not much has changed since I was in college 30+ years ago - they do wrap the utensils now in cloth napkins as opposed to a wax paper sleeve! And some of the IU team posters have been updated. I always wish the place seemed to b e a little more clean looking. As always - we enjoyed our meal and had good service.
This is the third time I go and the third time my steak is not good. First time it was totally raw. Not red, not bloody but raw. Second time was so hard that was difficult to chew. This time was burned. Both the bread and the steak were black. I pointed out to the waitress (about the bread. ) The top was totally black, some other people had black stripes on their bread which I fnd totally fine, ours had no white spaces! The steak was so burned that the black corners tasted like charcoal. Is an expensive place. I want at least a decent meal. The salad was good. I showed my steak to the waitress. She offered to change it but we did not wanted to wait as we had a previous engagement post dinner. She brought a cheesecake on the house which was nice and unexpected. The place was dirty and the decor and furniture is cheap. Looks inside like an inexpensive Italian trattoria.
Local staple in town. Not a lot of options on menu. But service great. You go for the steaks...just wish a bit more came with your meal. It's a steak and potatoes place---it's Indiana;)--but maybe a bit more side salad options then just lettuce. This is a busy place on weekends and they do like to turn tables so don't be surprised if next group of reservations is staring at you in the hour.
A lot of people trying to do steaks. Zagrebs still does it their way and blows away the chain restaurants. Unique and special, one for the 3 must eat restaurants in Bloomington.
If you aren't into steak, trying the ribs finished in the aluminum foil bbq sauce coffin...to die for!
Having eaten at Janko’s before, was treating both kids and grandkids to a meal they will never forget. Appitizers was out of this world. Steaks were thick and very tasty.
Very loud and IU oriented which is what you would expect in BLOOMINGTON, IN.
Would not eat there every day but really enjoyed it on my birthday with family.
We had 6:00pm reservations and did not get seated until 6:30pm. It was too cold to be waiting outside but there was not enough room for our entire party to wait inside for the first 15 minutes of our wait. Once seated everything was seamless. Our servers were fabulous. The food was good.
I have been eating at Zagrebs for well over 40 years. It has not changed one bit- except maybe for the prices, but then everything goes up. But they still serve the best steak you will ever have. Back in the 70's you used to pay your bill at a cash register by the front door as you left. Part of that ritual involved weighing your left overs on a scale next to the register. I never left with less than about a pound and a half of left overs. I don't take away that much anymore, but probably because I am about twice as big as I was back then. A little pricey perhaps, but no where near as expensive as many other steak joints, and besides- it is worth EVERY penny!
What's not to like about this restaurant? It is consistently good in every facet of the game. I hadn't been there in more than 20 years when my daughters were attending college. It has not changed a bit - if anything I think the steaks have gotten better. Size of the steaks will leave you with leftovers but what's not to like about that. Quick service even on a game night.
