James Street South first opened its doors back in2003 with the more contemporary Bar+ Grill nipping at its heels in 2011.
The new restaurant to be relaunched as James St. will offer diners bigger and better dining experience with a comfortable bar area for bar snacks and pre and post dinner drinks, alongside a private room on the ground floor called The Grill Room, as well as their long-established First Floor Private dining room.”
The menu is a more extensive offering of the favoured Bar + Grill dishes.
The extensive bar area will host a range of local drinks as well as a large selection of Irish Whiskeys and some light snacks.
Niall and his team look forward to welcoming you to this new chapter of dining out in Belfast. James St will continue to house The Cookery School on the second floor.
Quite noisy and definitely a bistro rather than posh restaurant.
Excellent food and service.
Posh restaurant prices !
Very enjoyable experience for dinner here on a Monday night. The dining room has great atmosphere and ambience. Very well designed menu, it is evident of the very high level of products used in every dish. It is not cheapest if you compare to around town, but you get what you pay for when dining out and this is no exception. If your looking for a high quality meal you will get it here no doubt. The service was very attentive but in no way obtrusive. Front of house staff very genuine and good sense of humor. If your looking for a place for dinner on a Monday in Belfast this is the place. We will be back !
We were visiting Belfast from the US and loved this lovely restaurant.

Fabulous dining experience from starters to post prandial drinks.
Great value for money.
Nice atmosphere, friendly staff and great food would definately recommend
We felt the restaurant was very cold and basic for the prices, i thought id booked a upscale restaurant
and ended up dining in a everyday bistro/cafe. I got risotto for starter and i felt it was under cooked.
We both ordered Steak for our mains and it was tasteless and my husbands champ was like baby food swimming in butter .
We where both really disappointed overall and went home feeling really underwhelmed by the whole experience.
Great food, excellent service, and modern chic setting. Staff were very helpful in helping explain offerings and making suggestions. The raspberry soufflé was to die for! Highly recommended.
Had a meal st James for my birthday. Everything was perfect. Good amazing and staff excellent. Would definitely recommend.
Wonderful food from start to finish. Extremely polite and helpful staff.
The food here is excellent! The service was attentive, friendly, and helpful. The noise, though, was quite extraordinary. It made it very, very difficult to enjoy the company of our dinner mates. Side note: the Rib Eye was extraordinary!
Very relaxed restaurant with great service; the Roast was a major hit with my husband and son.
Was given the recommendation by a friend. All in all a great Steakhouse! We had the Cote de boeuf which was cooked to perfection (medium rare). The service was quick and easy. The wine is reasonably priced too. Very suitable for a date night.
Tasty food as always, staff very friendly and overall great meal
We were in Belfast for an extended stay and I read what a great steakhouse this was and to be honest, Britain doesn’t do steak well. We had the Tomahawk ribeye for two and it was the best piece of meat we have ever experience in Britain. It was better than most of the NYC steak restaurants. Nice cocktails too and all the sides with the steak were delicious. An experience we will not soon forget.
Sitting at the Bar is awesome!!!
Had particular requests , all met except dairy free milk.
Always good. Professional and friendly. Attentive and warm.
Excellent staff, good food the only issue I had was that I specified in my reservation that it was my wife's birthday and they sat us at a very bad table (not very romantic next to the service counter), they could have also have a little treat just to make the day special. The noise was a bit too much as well but I guess that's what you get when the restaurant is busy. Overall good restaurant and once again 5 star staff.
Food was absolutely amazing, 3 different steaks where chosen and all 3 cooked to perfection. The starters were all beautiful, accompanied by excellent service and the front of house manager was superb at his job. All in all a superb dining experience and well worth the money ..
Delicious food and wine. Great ambience. Great service. The full package!!
Great service and good food
We had the pre theatre menu which was good value.
Ok but not great - service was rushed
An excellent meal from a varied menu with good, friendly and attentive service. Will definitely be back.
Amazing food, great ambience and very attentive staff. Thoroughly recommend.
Lovely starter and main in a pleasant environment. Attentive service.
Dining area was just a little too noisy, difficult to hear the person I was eating with.
Standard Belfast fare from well-known local producers (e.g. Hannon's) which was well-executed and delicious. However the menu lacked ambition and is very similar to other local restaurants who can produce chilli squid, crab on toast and a steak at better prices and in a less noisy atmosphere. The staff were excellent but there were not enough of them.
My husband and I visited James Street South on a Monday evening so it was fairly quiet. We had warm and friendly service, delicious wine and thought the place was decorated with real elegance. The menu was great, and we thoroughly enjoyed our food. Only tiny gripe is that my husband likes to have the cheeses on the board named to him! Would definitely recommend this place, lucky Belfast.
Good food and friendly service - however the serving staff are not "joined up" and spend their time duplicating each others' requests to diners. Also, no one seemed to know how to switch off the security alarm when it went off accidentally and the noise spoiled an otherwise good evening!
Excellent sevice from the minute we came through the door. Food was amazing and our server was very helpful and friendly.
I've dined at some of the top restaurants in the the UK and Ireland and JSS easily ranks amongst the top 5.
A little gem of a place nestled in a city centre side street with perfect ambience and food to die for. Very attentive and friendly service pitched at just the right level.
A wonderful experience and can't wait to go back. 10 out of 10.
My girlfriend and I attended James Street South for Valentine's Day, and we were both pleased with the occasion. The staff were helpful and courteous, from beginning to end. The menu may not be for the fussier eaters, and vegetarian options were not wide, but the food we ordered delivered both in terms of taste and presentation. It is certainly one of the more expensive restaurants and it justifies the price. The portions left us nicely full and there can be no argument with them. The only downfall was a slight lack of atmosphere: although there was ambience and it was visually attractive, it just seemed devoid of a spark that the absolute highly recommended restaurants have.
Excellent restaurant, very friendly staff.
The food was excellent but we had to wait 45 minutes for our main course (no starter) and the restaurant wasn't that busy. Other than that, the service was very good.
Great food and service although having to pay for bread as extra to accompany soup I feel a little unjust seeing as the prices are already quite expensive.
we have eaten here several times before and as always I was spoiled for choice on the menu: it all sounded delicious and I knew from experience that the food would not disappoint. This is not Belfast's cheapest venue but I think that we really got what we paid for: an excellent meal and beautifully presented.
Excellent meal, with the exception of one poor venison portion. I quietly ordered an additional portion for my guest which was embarrassingly presented as a further full meal, and charged as such. Well inside our allotted two hours we declined any desserts but ordered a final drink in its' place. The waitress returned informing us that the drink was waiting for us at the bar, effectively ending our evening without asking us.
We left around 40 mins later and our table remained free. Obviously no tip and no hurry back.
The welcome and service was excellent, the food superb and the ambience relaxing. It is expensive with 15% service charge but one only gets what you pay for. Thank you
We were disappointed in James St South having heard much about it. Why were most of the customers grouped around the edge of the restaurant and why were there no staff for long periods to be seen? One of the waitresses could hardly speak any English. Another seemed not to be trained very well, the proper cutlery was not on the table when some of the food was served. The starters were tasty, but the monkfish was not tasty and was on the bone which should have been pointed out when ordering.
