Brunch was very good, but it literally took 65 minutes from our order to food appearing on the table. Other guests were having the same issue, but we overheard the Manager blaming the slowness of service on a birthday party the night before that went until 6 am. Waiter was hard pressed to explain, but took nothing off the bill. If the host had explained as we arrived that they were incapable at the moment of getting orders out it might have helped! So many brunch choices in the neighborhood that I can't see ever returning with this approach and lack of accountability.
We have eaten at James many times, enjoying the bar menu. This time we brought 4 guest and dined from the main dinner menu. My gnocchi were burned? Gnocchi are not pan fried. They should not be blackened. My guest's meatloaf lacked flavor and was hard. The drinks, apps, other meals, and service were excellent!
Service was a bit slow, but the food was incredible. Would definitely recommend to friends and family and will certainly be back again.
reviews were fabulous but we NEVER had worse service. we were seated at 6;50 pm we didnt get our food until 740 . this was after i finally asked the server, whats going on- all we ordered was a burger, and a salad 'well that big table has food orders' um, it was just them and us at that point NO restaurant should have an hour wait time for a burger and a salad, especially when it was before the 'dinner rush' fine, we get it then couldnt find the server again i finally caught his eye at 8 i said 'perhaps we will have desert- and when we said well let him know what were having, he disappeared again fifteen minutes later, i said 'ok ill have the chocolate cake, thanks- and can you bring the check as well so that we can get out of here, we have a show to catch' HE NEVER CAME BACK WITH THE DESERT' finally at 830 walked up to him while he was busy chatting up another table and said 'hey just cross out the cake, and give me my check please' and all he did was say 'ok' it was an absolutely awful experience- i dont know what the excuse was, and i don't care what the excuse was ('oh, i dont know whats going on tonight,, its just slow " was something he said ' go to Friday Saturday Sunday instead, and do yourselves a huge favor THAT restaurant was fabulous
We are never in this part of the city, but this restaurant may get us back there. Looking for something not far from the art museum and found James on open table. Wow. Every morsel of food from start to finish was great, and a few great cocktails to go with. The pork chop was one of the best chops I ever ate. My daughter got the burger - outstanding in both flavor and texture. My wife went with Parmesan Crusted Chicken and loved it as well. We started with the cheesesteak pierogies (because how do you pass something like that up?), and my only complaint was I wanted more of them. Our waiter (whose name I wish I could remember) was informative, gave us great recommendations, and just the right amount of attentive. Granted, it was 5:00 when we got there, so it wasn't crowded, but I'm of the impression that the experience would have been just as good at 8:00. We will make a trip back to this neighborhood just for this restaurant again. Go there. Go there now. Run, don't walk.
Went here for lunch. Got the mixed green salad with the rosemary grilled chicken. Chicken was really dry and place seems a bit overpriced. Atmosphere is pretty good, I'd recommend this place for happy hour.
The breakfast burger was a bit too dry for me, kids really like the death by chocolate pancakes. The poinsettia mimosa was by far the best part of the visit for me.
Upon entering James there was an apparent fish and garlic scent that greeted us. We did not anticipate that all of our food would taste of fish and garlic. Of their entire page of red wines, there were only two selections available. The music was too loud for the space— as there were a total of 3 tables and 4 people at the bar. The music was blasting middle school/high school dance music from 1999-2002. It would be a better setting for a group lunch rather than an intimate/romantic dinner for two.
Food and service were absolutely perfect
The meal was great quality but I don’t think it was totally worth the pricing.
They were out of so much dishes and alcohol and the service wasn’t great considering there were perhaps 4 tables seated at that time. I won’t be going back any time soon.
We tried this place during restaurant week. The food is amazing.
Never knew about this place, while it was okay, probably wouldn't go back. Food was just okay, service was slow.
Great location for a quick business lunch in Logan area of CC. Chicken BLT was delicious (bacon was crispy perfect), colleauge ordered the Caprese Salad, which was huge. Tuna Club also got rave reviews.
We were looking for a casual place to meet my sister-in-law for dinner. It was Philadelphia Restaurant week. They are a couple of blocks from Suburban train station. We were greeted by the hostess immediately. We were about 15 minutes early. Our server was great. She was very knowledgeable about the menu. I wish I remembered her name. My sister-in-law and I had the potato crusted salmon. My wife had the Philly pork loin. We really enjoyed our meals. They also have a really good lobster and crab bisque. We will definitely be back.
The food was excellent. Service was horrible. The waitress breath was horrible. The food runners were rude. Staff was not friendly at all. But the food was great
I thought the food was excellent. Our server was nice but not overly friendly. I loved the atmosphere!
We went to James during restaurant week for lunch. Our soup came out cold so had to send it back but was delicious once it was hot. Our waiter could use improving. when our entrée was served, they forgot an item so by time we got it we were almost done and then took forever to get our bill and when we did, we were overcharged and given the restaurant was not terribly busy, it took a long time to get a manager to adjust our bill. Also, while making our reservation on OpenTable I specifically noted it was a birthday celebration but that went unnoticed as well. So while the food is good quality I do not think we will be returning.
Our food was decent but cold. All 3 diners were served cold food and the waiter never came back to check on us. I blame this on a bad waiter not a bad restaurant. It was not busy so there was no excuse. The portions were big and dessert was good but we waited 20 min for a slice of cake
Food was excellent and the service was prompt and friendly.
4 of 10 wines by the glass not available on a Saturday night?
Obstinate chef serving inedible food.
The avocado toast was out of this world -fresh tasty with beautiful plating. Visited your restaurant for brunch during Philly restaurant week and for price we expected small portions but were surprised they were not small. The chocolate cake was sinfully delicious We will definitely be back.
The food was A-1, but the service was not good at all. It was restaurant week at lunch time and there seemed to be only 2 waitresses on duty. We had 1pm reservations and were seated as soon as we arrived. It took a while for our server to come but she came with water and took our order. Our first course was soup, which I sure was done and only had to be plated. But, nevertheless, we didnt see any soup until 1:56pm and no food until 2:20. The waitress told us that the kitchen was slow, but the restaurant was not crowded by any means. I will return to the restaurant for the food but I will make sure that I am in no rush.
My first visit to James and it probably won't be my last: delicious veggie option (sweet potato gnocchi . . . yum!) and a dynamite, very rich chocolate cake. Creative drinks (I recommend the Volstead). My only complaint was the noise level, which I did get used to. Also, I went during Restaurant Week, when it was a good value. May or may not feel that way otherwise.
We attended James for the restaurant week lunch. We were seated quickly but the hostess did not want to seat us at our requested window seat stating it was the end of the lunch rush, restaurant opened at 11:30am. Shortly thereafter other customers were granted window seats. Our waiter didn't appear happy to be working. Our reservation was at 1:30 on Thursday and they were out of the new york cheesecake that was on the special menu. After water was poured we asked for straws and he returned with them bare handed and laid them on the table; no napkin. This was upsetting. He never checked on us other than to bring us our check.
The food was delicious. The only problem I had were that the sweet potato chips were burned but other than that, no other issues. I definitely will be back!
We came for a business lunch. Our soup came out 30min in. Our entree came 1 hour in. About 1.5 hours since arrival, we decided to leave without dessert. Restaurant week seemed like a great deal however we did not have 2 hours to spare for lunch. Also they ran out of cheesecake for dessert.
Went to "James" for restaurant week lunch. The service was very friendly and apologetic about delays -- the restaurant was a bit overwhelmed with the big restaurant week lunch crowd. The food, when it arrived, was excellent -- a delicious lobster bisque, good sandwiches with crispy sweet potato chips and large portions of very good desserts. Excellent value.
Service was horrible. We were left sitting at our table for an hour, and no one came to check on us. I would not recommend this place for anyone that has an hour lunch break. Ultimately, I did not get to eat any of my lunch in the restaurant but rather, had to have the entire thing boxed up, which was cold. I tried giving this restaurant another chance however, this is not the first time the service was awful. I will not be back to this place, and I would not recommend it.
Service was a complete fail. We sat for over 30 minutes before even getting a glass of water. Absolute waste of time. Good however was very good.
Made reservations for lunch during restaurant week. The hostess could not find reservations even after I showed him the online confirmation, however we were seated pretty quickly. Waited a long time for waitress to take our drink and then food orders. Waited even longer to be served the drinks and food. The couple seated near us experienced the same issues and they complained several times. The food was worth the very long wait, however we ordered dessert (cheesecake) and didn’t get 45 minutes. We asked to take the dessert to go because our parking meter was about to expire since we were there for almost 2 hours. The waitress brought the wrong desserts and we waited 15 more minutes for 2 pieces of presliced cake that could have been served in under 1 minute. To our dismay the couple that continually complained about the service had their entire bill comped and we paid full price, this was very dissappointing
Restaurant was super short staffed. Only 2 servers.
We went for a Restaurant Week lunch. The food was delicious but service was incredibly slow. I don’t think they had enough staff because it took a half hour to get our first course (a salad) and another half hour to get our main course. We asked that dessert be boxed and that took over 20 minutes even though we were told it would be right out. Empty tables around us stayed dirty for a long time. I would have thought they would properly staff for Restaurant Week.
To celebrate birthdays, we went to James during Restaurant Week for lunch. The food was good. However, the service was not as good. We has to wait ~30 min after finishing lunch to even be able to ask for the dessert course to be packed to go. During a work week lunch, this is not a great experience. Thus the reason for the decreased rating. Food was good and I would recommend James but not if you are on any type of schedule.
My first dinner at James The food was wonderful it was Restaurant Week and we took advantage of their specials Lobster bisque soup, sweet potato gnocchi and chocolate cake. All were superb, and I would gladly order any and all again. One suggestion is to use a heavier Chardonnay during winter months (my selection as a little light and fruity)
We always enjoy our time at James, lunch, brunch, happy hour and dinner. Sometimes the music is too loud for conversation.
Beautiful restaurant, and the food is always good to excellent. Service tends to be poor to spotty, and the prices are a bit higher than comparable restaurants in the neighborhood. If they could do a better job and training and keeping good waitstaff, the overall experience would be outstanding.
This was my first visit to this restaurant, I was pleased with the service and the food was delicious. I will definitely return.
Went here for lunch during restaurant week prior to visiting The Barnes museum. Chose it for its proximity to the museum and the food restaurant week lunch menu. It was well worth it.
James is a cozy and casual place where the service is outstanding and the menu was great. I started with crab and lobster bisque which had enough pieces of seafood and seasoning to make it one of the best I’ve had. This was followed by a good size crab cake that had little filler and was delicious. To end the meal the chocolate cake was moist, not too sweet and to die for.
All for $20!
Great meal and will definitely be back especially when in the city to explore The museums.
The food was tasty, but a bit pricey. The service was good however the music was much too loud. Great drinks, tasty food, good service. But a bit overpriced and hard to have a conversation with the music at the volume it was.
