The James Beard House is known as New York’s best-kept gastronomic secret. And everyone is welcome. Located in the former townhouse of celebrated cookbook author & television personality James Beard, the James Beard house is in the heart of New York City’s Greenwich Village. Over 20 dining events are held monthly to showcase culinary artists from around the world, featuring multi-course dinners with wine pairings prepared by guest chefs. At the historic James Beard House, you will have a truly unique dining experience. You’ll begin the evening with wines & a selection of passed hors d’oeuvre in the Greenhouse or, weather permitting, in the outdoor garden. You will then enjoy a five-course, pre-set menu prepared by the day’s featured chef, all paired with wines chosen to enhance the flavor of your meal. You will even have an opportunity to walk through the kitchen, see the chefs in action, & meet the guest chef personally. Prepaid reservations are required for all events.

Exceptional on every level! The JBH is a hidden secret amongst the NYC food scene. The reality is that it is available to all by visiting their website. The Burlock Coast group from Ft. Lauderdale and Chef Gavin, were amazing! Each course was creative and perfectly balanced. The wine pairings were superb. The service staff at the JBH was helpful, attentive and extremely professional. I recommend the opportunity to attend an event at the JBH to anyone looking for an exquisite culinary experience!

Had the pleasure of dining when the visiting chef was Gavin Pera and his staff. Each course from the appetizers to each of the dinner courses built upon each other and were truly phenomenal. The rum based cocktails were outstanding and the dessert was amazing. To top off the outstanding food we had the priviledge of being seated with a wonderful couple from the Washington DC area who was retired from the US Air Force after serving 28 years and continues to serve our country after his retirement. Truly spectacular evening.

Always reliably good, this time the visiting chef outdid himself and every course was noteworthy -- one of the best meals ever @ Beard, and that's saying a lot.

The seating was too tight for the room size, our server passed plates over the head of my fellow dining guest for me to serve myself. Leaving the table to use the restroom during dinner was uncomfortable . The room was so loud that we could not converse during dinner. The food was disappointing. The outdoor reception prior to dinner was lovely, the appetizers were very nice. The wine was presented well with an engaging explanation by a well informed representative of the winery. The dining room staff was cordial. This dinner was to be the highlight of a trip with friends and was very disappointing.

The event I attended was one held by Chef Marcello Verzino of Scottsdale, Arizona. From the canapes to the dessert, the cuisine was simply outstanding. It was authentic, savory, delicious and unique. I had dined at Amarone, his restaurant in New York. It was the best hand-made past I had ever had and this current dining experience did not disappoint. The ambience of the James Beard House is perfect for this kind of event. The patio is beautiful, intimate and festive. The outdoor bar is the perfect centerpiece of this well-designed space. The patrons that this event attracted were interesting, cordial, diversified and endlessly enjoyable. I haven't enjoyed a dining experience this much in decades.

Though Beard House is known for its fine food, this meal was exceptional for every course. The wine pairings were also very good. The service, its usual excellence. The only down side is that it was much noisier than usual, so we had to shout to conduct a conversation.

The food from the guest Chefs is excellent. However the cocktail hour is a mess with the guests dive bombing the servers for the hors D'Oeuvres--it's as if the guests have been starving all day. Many guests don't get any since some guests take all the food. The seating is very cramped and the guests have to pass dirty dishes to each other to get to the servers. They should have fewer guests so it would be a more pleasant event. They need to restock the rest room with toilet paper. Won't return.

As lovely as the food was, my partner felt it was not necessarily what he would call "foodie" fare. He would save that label for a place such as Eleven Madison. I completely enjoyed the social aspect of the evening. Perhaps it was because much of the chef's family was in attendance but their was a particularly warm, convivial spirit that was contagious. By the end of the dinner we were hugging our seatmates. I'm sure this aspect is not for everyone but we loved it.

This was my second visit to the James Beard house. If you've never been, you pick a dinner based on the theme or chef of that meal. This meal was a Foie Gras meal and it was just as heavenly as you would imagine! We had amazing hors doeuvres in the back garden along with some rose, then had another few courses in the dining room with other white and wine pairings. We sat with a nice couple and all food was outstanding. I highly recommend for a special occasion or just if you've never been!

Overly "fancy" restaurant, with overly bland food, which lacked serious culinary excellence but is made to look pretty. Also, because of table size (10), it's hard to talk to the people you have come with. It's okay -- but only okay; not worth the price.

This was our second time at the Beard House and both times it was memorable for the food, ambiance and service. It doesn't matter who the chef is, the food will be innovative and delicious. We especially loved the meal on May 11th with it's Texas slant. We will be back each time we get to New York.

One word: Magic. If you are a foodie, you will love it. I took a client who is also a foodie and we adored it. It's a wonderful place that brings the best chefs in the world to NYC. And is fantastic for an unusual business dinner. Important to note: you will be seated with strangers -- so you have to be up for that kind of fun and if you're not, this is likely NOT the spot for you.

A must experience for any real foodie! We recently enjoyed the Modern Appalachian Spring dinner at the James Beard House and it was an immense treat!! How have I never done this before?! In addition to the delicious food and wine pairings imagined by the husband-wife team of Richard and Anne Arbaugh of South Hills Market and Café in Charleston, we also met some lovely people and the entire evening felt like a private dinner party and was an utter delight. Having done some homework in the days following, I now have a huge appreciation for the work of the foundation, the recognition it gives to chefs all over country and especially the opportunities they offer to people aspiring for a career in the culinary arts that would otherwise not have an opportunity. RESPECT!! I will be back and I will donate to the James Beard Foundation in support of its mission to celebrate, nurture, and preserve America’s diverse culinary heritage and future! Forks up and I cannot wait for my next visit

The James Beard House was an amazing dining experience. We were new to the James Beard concept and could not have had a better first time. Charlie Palmer and associates prepared outstanding food, Silver Oak provided incredible wines, and the guests we were seated with could not have been more fun. We will look for James Beard events now that we know about the incredible things they do.

All meals at James Beard House are memorable, but this was one of the most delicious I've ever had there, with chefs from the Michelin-starred Clocktower Restaurant doing the cooking. In addition, it was the first time the people I met and enjoyed during the cocktail hour were the same ones I shared a table with, and all were delightful company. Service, as always, was outstanding in this historic landmark location. I love that you not only share a meal with new people, but get to enjoy meeting a diverse population so that it's an evening's "entertainment" as well. And you get to ask the chefs about preparation.

While the James Beard house sponsors some of the best food in the city, our last meal for "St. Joseph's Day" was a bit of a disappointment. The fantastic atmosphere, great wine pairings, the opportunity to chat with interesting fellow diners and passed hors d'oeuvres to die for, made the evening worthwhile, the actual main courses were sadly lacking. Each course was fish, and one tasted "fishier" than the next. Overall it was still a great evening.

Table #11 (mirrored ceiling and formerly Jame's BD) was the perfect spot for our family birthday celebration. As our son, the birthday boy (at 30!), said, "The best birthday I ever had." A once in a lifetime for us, but would recommend it to any others wanting the perfect gastronomic, atmospheric, and celebratory feeling. We won't soon forget the freshness of the food and the camaraderie with the staff. Thanks to everyone who made it possible!
