   The James Beard House was an amazing dining experience. We were new to the James Beard concept and could not have had a better first time. Charlie Palmer and associates prepared outstanding food, Silver Oak provided incredible wines, and the guests we were seated with could not have been more fun. We will look for James Beard events now that we know about the incredible things they do.

   As usual, Beard House was a special experience. This evening the food was unusually good - the guest chef was from Vancouver. My table companions were congenial and the service was, as usual exceptional.

   All meals at James Beard House are memorable, but this was one of the most delicious I've ever had there, with chefs from the Michelin-starred Clocktower Restaurant doing the cooking. In addition, it was the first time the people I met and enjoyed during the cocktail hour were the same ones I shared a table with, and all were delightful company. Service, as always, was outstanding in this historic landmark location. I love that you not only share a meal with new people, but get to enjoy meeting a diverse population so that it's an evening's "entertainment" as well. And you get to ask the chefs about preparation.

   While the James Beard house sponsors some of the best food in the city, our last meal for "St. Joseph's Day" was a bit of a disappointment. The fantastic atmosphere, great wine pairings, the opportunity to chat with interesting fellow diners and passed hors d'oeuvres to die for, made the evening worthwhile, the actual main courses were sadly lacking. Each course was fish, and one tasted "fishier" than the next. Overall it was still a great evening.

   We were really looking forward to a special dining experience, and while the food was outstanding, the event was over-sold and we were seated at a large communal table of strangers directly outside the kitchen, near the garbage. While the diners upstairs were seated in a beautiful dining room and given a warm welcome, we were actually told to be quiet as we were apparently disrupting speeches we weren't even aware of. The kitchen was noisy and the waitstaff frequently yelled at each other in front of us. At one point, a guest asked a waiter to refill his wine glass, as we had long waits between courses given that upstairs was the clear priority. The waiter snapped at the guest, saying they were out of wine for that course and we could take it up with the chef if we had an issue with it. The waiter also muttered something along the lines of "I'm not having an easy night either". I've honestly never experienced anything like it. I feel like we completely missed out on the James Beard House experience, even though we paid exactly the same ticket price as the diners upstairs. We compared it to bleacher seats at a baseball game. The difference is that you knowingly pay less for bleacher seats, because you know you're sacrificing part of the experience. In this case, we paid $175 a ticket only to be seated in a drafty kitchen prep area and treated as if we were unwelcome. The JBF should either limit their ticket sales or offer these seats at a discount; I can't imagine the negative word-of-mouth is worth the few extra ticket sales.

    This evening was a delight ranging from the people we met to the outstanding culinary treat. The matching of wines to food was perfect and the whole evening was a totally enjoyable.
