Jaleo DC Ratings and Reviews
My daughter and I dined at Jaleo DC on Saturday night. It was one of the most memorable experiences of my life . First of all, we were an hour late for our reservation. I called to explain to the hostess that I had just had hip replacement surgery and had very much wanted to make my first venture out to my favorite restaurant. She graciously held our table. I’m walking with a cane but not very well and I decided I could walk the 3 blocks to the restaurant from the metro rail. I made a mistake and went the wrong way! Now 6 blocks in the opposite direction and completely immobile, we called Uber and finally made it to your front door. My most heart felt gratitude to the hostess for holding our table which was perfect. It was out of the way of foot traffic like I had requested. Sergio made our 2 hour dining experience special, like he knew what we had gone through but I never told him. The sangria is the best in the land. As is the gin and tonic oysters, potatoes bravos, Gambas al ajillo and the wonderful scallops with the butternut squash. What a truly magnificent dinner!! We will definitely return soon, when I’m feeling stronger. Until then, I’m bowing to all the staff at Jaleo DC. You guys rock!!
We tried the Pre-Theater meal ($30). It was delicious and looked so pretty when it was served. My choices were: gazpacho, garlic shrimp; spinach lightly sautéed with garlic, pine nuts, and raisins, and crepe brûlée. I must admit this would have left us hungry, except for their delicious bread. Their red sangria is always delicious! I doubt there is anything served that is not wonderful.
Usually the service is much better. I think our 9:30PM reservation on 11/11/2017, Veterans Day Weekend, only available at time of call at around 6:45PM placed us at a disadvantage. It was too crowded by that time and naturally the demand might have been too much for the kitchen which resulted in slow service. In addition the food was not to the expectation/quality that we have previously enjoyed. I will try not to have such a late reservation in the future.
Delicious tapas. I especially loved the fried eggplant. We dined with our young toddler, which can be challenging. However, the staff was incredibly kind, courteous, and attentive throughout our meal. All of us enjoyed our meals- the portions are larger than expected for tapas. We actually ended up with some left overs!
My husband and i knew the noise level would be high but found the food very much worth ignoring that issue.
We were not seated until 15 min after our reservation time, but it was a very busy Saturday night. Our waiter was very helpful in answering our questions about portion size and as we were quite hungry, suggested ordering a couple of dishes that could be prepared relatively quickly, e.g. flautas with iberico ham (2 per order) and the pea salad which could readily be shared and was a perfect complement to the ham flautas. I then ordered the scallops in romescu sauce and my husband ordered the housemate pork sausage with beans. These were all excellent and left us just enough room for dessert, flan and clementine ice cream with caramel garnish. Just enough food and reasonably priced considering the high quality.
I wanted an interesting dining experience for visiting friends. We chose the chef's tasting menu, and were handsomely rewarded for the choice. Plate after plate of delicious food was presented, and it was all extraordinary. The serving staff was also very friendly and gracious. It was a terrific culinary adventure.
We enjoyed the tapas, including the garlic shrimp, chicken with parsley, spinach and pine nuts, beef and others. The ice cream dessert including olive oil and bread was very good. Their sangria is always fantastic. Wait staff are very attentive. It is very loud (but not as loud as the one in Bethesda) so conversation in a group of more than 4 is difficult, particularly if anyone is hard of hearing.
We had a great time at Jaleo. Unfortunately, the restaurant was packed and we weren't able to be seated until 20 minutes after our reservation time, but the hostess was apologetic and tried to seat us as fast as she could. Once we were seated, the service was excellent. Really enjoyed all the food.
My date and I ordered about 5 items to share. and they were all delicious. The warm spinach salad is remarkable. Truly different and delicious. The scallops, hangar steak and the mini-burger were also delicious. The flan was the best I've ever had and the Pan de Chocolate was outstanding. Warning, the "carafe" of sangria is a pitcher. Stay thirsty my friend!
