Jaleo Crystal City Ratings and Reviews
We booked a table for 7, and then 6 more people wanted to join the party. Jaleo easily accommodated them all with a pleasant table that facilitated conversation. The plates were all delicious, with unusual flavors that worked well together. Our waiter was particularly helpful and friendly. Some in the party had never had tapas before and were uneasy about trying them, but they readily became fans.
I love going to Jaleo. Even so, no place is perfect or perfect for everyone. If you come here thinking you’re going to get a plate piled high with food - bye-bye. These dishes are prepared thoughtfully and with your taste-buds in mind. If I were going to try something for the first time, this is where I’d go! And DO try at least one thing you haven’t tried before.
Here’s a snippet from my most recent visit. We made our own selections from the menu - the goal was to only have items we haven’t tried before - but first, some of their red sangria. (The white sangria is even more amazing when on the menu!) We ordered a trio of cheese plates - each enough for two people - just a tasting though. Everything is so unique and fresh - even the cheese seemed special because of what it was served with - goat’s milk cheese with raisin walnut bread and fig jam - among other items. Yum!
I had recently read something about the gazpacho soup so I had to give that a try. AMAZING (see photo)! A little salty for me, but I use very little salt in my own cooking. My empty bowl is a testament that it wasn’t too salty for me to want to lick the bowl. I didn’t, I just wanted to! You’ll have to order it just to see what’s at the bottom of your bowl when they bring it to the table.
We ordered the warm Brussels sprout salad with oranges, pomegranate, and yogurt. It was yummy as well.
Then the beautifully balanced house made chorizo in olive oil with creamy mashed potatoes. What a delight.
I have to say that my biggest disappointment with this place has always been that I’m not too fond of their desserts - my waste line says thank you! But I’m already planning what I’m going to have on my next visit!
Some extras - there is street parking or an underground parking garage across the street that is free on the weekends. The noise level here is mostly low. I can almost always have a conversation with my dinner partner without raising my voice.
Hostess was a bit clueless. We made reservations for 730 on Open Table, but when we called to say we were going to be a bit late, she said they had no reservation under my name and that they were booked until 9pm. so my sister proceeded to make additional reservations for 745 and 8pm. When we got there, after waiting about 10 minutes to be greeted, she actually did have our original reservation, and the restaurant was practically empty. Just didn't seem like she knew what was going on.
We had an early dinner and everything was great from start to finish. Got lucky with a space out front, we were seated as soon as we arrived, knowledgable server. Every dish was great. Considering it is tapas, we were full with 5-6 different dishes. The sopa de pescado was so delicious. It reminded me of my grandmother's cooking. So much flavor and depth. Warm brussel sprouts were delicious, two shrimp dishes and a special menu item for the day was duck. Heavenly. Moist. Tastes like it was brined, love the thyme and cooked perfectly. We will be back real soon.
Everything was amazing from start to finish! Service, menu, wine list, food...everything! Thrilled beyond words that I could find Envinate wines here! And the mussel dish was one of the most amazing things I’ve ever had. So simple & fresh.
I will absolutely be coming back the next time I’m in town. Thanks for a wonderful evening!
This was our 1st time to Jaleo & the 3 of us thoroughly enjoyed our experience. Our waiter was friendly & after giving us water & taking our drink order he explained the tapas menu to us. The appetizers were delicious but the main meals were outstanding. The menu is pretty extensive so everyone can find something they love. We were all to full to get dessert so we didn't see the dessert menu but I am sure it is as creative as their food.
As always the food and service was excellent. We enjoy Jaleo as a special treat, especially when the weather is nice and the outdoor seating is open. I was surprised and disappointed with the physical condition of some parts of the restaurant when I walked thru on the way to the restroom. The restrooms in particular are showing wear and age. They are clean but the vanities are extremely worn with missing finish, damaged cabinet doors, etc. I also noticed this in another area of the restaurant as well. Wouldn't take much work to bring these areas back up to the standards of the rest of the decor.
My husband and I were celebrating his birthday; we ordered the Classic Tasting Menu. It was amazing! In honor of the occasion, the chef sent us a wonderful comp appetizer of grilled clementines. This was followed by 10 tapas, including jamon iberico de bellota, warm brussells sprouts salad, apple and fennel salad, ham and chicken croquettes, chorizo wrapped in potato, patatas bravas (always one of our favorites!), gambas al ajillo, sausage with white beans, and grilled hanger steak with piquillo peppers. This was followed by the lightest, creamiest flan I've ever had (including mine) served with Catalan cream and oranges. We loved every bite! The only thing I would change is the music. It seems a shame to be at a Spanish restaurant and not hear any Spanish music! Highly recommend it--it's our favorite restaurant in the area by far.
We went to Jaleo on Dec 3 2017 for our father's 85th birthday. Initially, the manager did not accept the Open Door receipt for a gift certificate (three years old) in lieu of the actual gift certificate. After some awkward discussion we suggested that she contact Open Door to verify the gift certificate. After 30 minutes or so she had our certificate verified and we placed our order. The plates were very tasty although the portions were small as it is with tapas. They were expensive but very good. The sangria was excellent. Patatas bravas better than I had in Spain. We ordered a dessert and after it appeared unavailable the waitress informed us they were providing a replacement and two additional desserts on the house. The desserts were the flavor star of the meal, especially the apple charlotte (carlotta) and the flan. Although the meal started off on a bad note, overall the service was excellent (Ethiopia) and the management was very gracious in serving the desserts on the house. Not including the dessert, lunch came out to about $40 per person. This was pricey but in the end we felt it was worth coming back for a special occasion.
As usual, Jaleo was great. Food, drinks, and service were on point, with one exception this time: the Conejo en salmorejo con puré de albaricoques (Canary Islands-style marinated rabbit confit with apricot purée). It was barely palatable and extremely dry. My husband and I are both fans of rabbit, so this wasn't just a case of not liking that type of meat. The quail, however, was fabulous!
Saturday I took my visiting parents here so that my mother could get her Spanish omelet due to my father being only meat and potatoes person. He asked, as we walked in, if he could run over to McDonalds afterwords.
He left happy and filled loving each dish and flavour, admitting he would have never gone in without assistance but would for now on want to return every time he returns.
The service was fantastic, as every question that was asked was answered in clear and purposeful points.
The food was great. The salad and vegetable dishes were superb. Especially since I associate Jaleo with meat. The flank steak was sooo tender. After a traditional all-American Thanksgiving turkey dinner it was great to sample one of the many varieties of cuisines that contribute to our contemporary food culture. Three cheers for World Central Kitchen by the way.
We were one of four tables in the dining room. Waited 10 minutes for water. Waited 15 for our server to say hello and take wine order. They were out of the wine of the week, but didn't notify us until after we ordered it and we had to wait 10 minutes for our server to return to the table to tell us. Then they were out of one of the dishes we ordered. Worst experience I've ever had there. Hoping it was an off-night but won't be going there for dinner any time soon.
I have high standards when it comes to Tapas, and I was extremely disappointed in the flavors. Croquettas were so-so - they need to learn from Cafe Iberico or go to Lisbon and taste real croquettas. What really irked me is that at Cafe Iberico in Chicago, you can get the jamon, Manchego and Bread with tomatoes in one dish at an extremely reasonable price and it is delicious. At Jaleo, you have to order the manchego, jamon and bread with tomatoes separately at ridiculous prices and it still doesn't taste the same. They need to nix that so-called toast/bread or cracker...whatever it is, it doesn't work. The calamari was so-so...the only thing that was decent was the endives and the Flamenquines. But overall, I'd only go here for drinks and skip the food.
We enjoyed our meal at our most recent visit to Jaleo but it wasn't as good as usual. Our asparagus was forgotten and didn't arrive until we had finished with the meal, which was an odd ending. Some of the recipes have changed or the executing of them isn't what it use to be. Still had a few items that were signature and high quality (patatas bravas and steak.) The services, as usual, was spot-on.
