Jaleo Crystal City Ratings and Reviews
We were one of four tables in the dining room. Waited 10 minutes for water. Waited 15 for our server to say hello and take wine order. They were out of the wine of the week, but didn't notify us until after we ordered it and we had to wait 10 minutes for our server to return to the table to tell us. Then they were out of one of the dishes we ordered. Worst experience I've ever had there. Hoping it was an off-night but won't be going there for dinner any time soon.
I have high standards when it comes to Tapas, and I was extremely disappointed in the flavors. Croquettas were so-so - they need to learn from Cafe Iberico or go to Lisbon and taste real croquettas. What really irked me is that at Cafe Iberico in Chicago, you can get the jamon, Manchego and Bread with tomatoes in one dish at an extremely reasonable price and it is delicious. At Jaleo, you have to order the manchego, jamon and bread with tomatoes separately at ridiculous prices and it still doesn't taste the same. They need to nix that so-called toast/bread or cracker...whatever it is, it doesn't work. The calamari was so-so...the only thing that was decent was the endives and the Flamenquines. But overall, I'd only go here for drinks and skip the food.
We enjoyed our meal at our most recent visit to Jaleo but it wasn't as good as usual. Our asparagus was forgotten and didn't arrive until we had finished with the meal, which was an odd ending. Some of the recipes have changed or the executing of them isn't what it use to be. Still had a few items that were signature and high quality (patatas bravas and steak.) The services, as usual, was spot-on.
Met an old friend for dinner--at first I was a bit dismayed that our table was "out in the open" rather than at a booth--but I hadn't thought to ask for a booth. Nevertheless, it turned out fine. We both love tapas! The food was great--just enough on each plate for us both to have our fill-- and the cocktails, as well. We tried a sherry from the tasting list--fabulous. My friend's a pescatarean and there was plenty to keep us both happy. ALSO, last but not least, our server was really wonderful. Attentive without hovering, friendly and knowledgeable. He was part of the experience.
We were staying nearby for a conference and had found this restaurant on TripAdvisor. It's open later than most of the other restaurants in the area, which we needed due to our schedule, and the menu looked interesting. Most of the restaurants in the area are chains. Noise level is on the high side, and seating is a bit crowded -- this is not a quiet date night kind of place -- but the staff was great, and the individual dishes ranged from very good to excellent. The red sangria is significantly better than one usually finds in tapas restaurants. The flan and the chocolate flan were outstanding, as was the espresso with brandy. One of our party had to avoid gluten, which was easy given the many options, a clearly marked special menu, and the very kind staff, who went out of their way to warn about not tasting certain dishes other people had ordered. All in all, a really good experience, at a reasonable cost for the high quality. If we're ever back in the area, Jaleo will be on our revisit list.
This Jaleo location has much of the same vibe as Bethesda, but not as inviting as downtown. As always, the service is very good. The drinks were enjoyable, however, none of the six tapas we ordered had much flavor or interest. Particularly disappointing were the chicken fritters - fried balls of mush, and the seared piquillo peppers - which tasted like a cold, wet red pepper filled with soft cheese. Being the host of the group, and having suggested this Jaleo based on my positive experiences at other locations, it made for an awkward evening. As the tapas came out, each was tasted, and no one in the group ate more than the first bite.
I want to emphasize that all other Jaleo experiences have been good - so perhaps this was just an off night in the kitchen
Love Jaleo! Brought some work folks who were in from out of town. They couldn’t stop raving about how great every dish was! Tapas are the best because you get to sample everything you want at one meal. Jaleo is a staple for me to have in the neighborhood and I’m happy to support anything Jose Andrés. Looking forward to continuing to spread the word and to coming back.
Creative menu but a bit disappointing a visit for us. The plated combinations didn't seem as balanced on this visit. The beet dressing was too vinegary to taste the beets. The sauce the scallops were in didn't compliment mild scallops. The waiters delivered too fast so multiple hot dishes I ordered came at once and got cold. They should have this timing down by now being a tapas place.
We did the brunch this past Sunday on our visit to DC. I go to a lot of celebrity chef Restaurants and some times they leave you with a bad taste. This time Jose Andres did not disappointed me . I was a little afraid of the $30 surprise brunch but I was glad we did. Actually for the price including a mimosa or sangria is not bad at all. We left with our stomachs full. It was delicious. Each Tapa was just a explosion of flavors. I don't mind paying good money for great food.. but this time it was actually and surprisingly inexpensive. We all had the Sangria and we loved it. My friend kept eating the bread with garlic like it was the end of the world. The shrimp with that delicious sauce ..yummm. The croquetas... the jamon ... EVERYTHING was just amazing. I really recommend it.. and it will be great for an very productive business lunch. Almost forgot to mention the great service we received from our waiter and all the staff. THANK YOU.
Everything was great. Most in the group liked their meals. The waitstaff was outstanding.
I was a bit disappointed that the arroz con pollo option offered in the online menu was not available at the restaurant and staffers were seemingly unaware that it appeared in the online website.
Overall, it was a really pleasant experience.
We almost always take visiting friends to Jaleo in Crystal City. It's a great, fun restaurant and it's very convenient for us since we live just a few blocks away. The variety on the menu is amazing and it's fun for us all to select a number of tapas plates and share with our friends, discovering dishes we have never tried before. Even the desserts are exotic and delicious.
Exceptional service, our favorite entree would be the Hangar Steak and Red Peppers. No one will be disappointed by ordering the Seared Salmon and Stewed Vegetables, Salmon Tartar and Trout Roe Cones. Crystal City has 3 Hilton properties and is only a short one block walk to Jaleo.
Jaleo continues to be the best place in the DC metropolitan area for Tapas. Over the years the food has become less salty and more flavorful. We had about 9 different tapas for a table of 5 in addition to two soups and were happy with each dish. The best was the quail, which unfortunately was the one tapa that was a microserving. The sangria was OK--I can make a better one at home--so you are best off getting a bottle of wine instead. The one down point was the service. Our waitress was patronizing and came by infrequently. The rest of the wait staff was fine.
