Jaleo Crystal City Ratings and Reviews
We've been coming to Jaleo for years, and the food is fantastic. But..... I don't know if the portions are getting smaller but even for two to share some of the tapas, they seemed very skimpy. We will continue to go to Jaleo but will questioning our waiter/waitress in the future for more details about the size and amount of our dishes.
I'd heard of good things about Jaleo for many years and only knew of the one in DC. Not sure why I never made it there but I'm happy to find this restaurant in nearby Crystal City. Great ambiance, great food and service - and convenient free parking after 4 pm! I'll be back!
Great variety of food. Highly recommend the fried eggplant, Catalan spinach, and piquillo peppers. Vegetarians/pescatarians may want to ask about ingredients as a dish came with an unexpected ham garnish. However, the restaurant handled the situation very well.
So glad I made a reservation here. The place was packed when we arrived. Even though we had a reservation, we had to wait a few minutes for a table to clear up. No big deal. There were three of us and we each ordered three to four tapas. Definitely a lot of food. Service was great and so was the food. Jaleo is a favorite and we will be coming back.
I’ve been to jaleo before and was looking forward to eating there again, Unfortunately I was disappointed this time. Especially the paella. You could taste nothing but salt and that’s covered up the calamari. Thank goodness the shrimp was cooked separately bc that was good. I don’t think I’ll be back again. I don’t know what happened.
Service was just shocking. Only 4 other tables in use in the restaurant and it took us 10 minutes to be waited on? I almost had to search out our server to get a second glass of wine. We would have liked to have coffee with our dessert, but never saw the server until he brought the bill way after we'd finished dessert. Lovely food , but I don't know if I could recommend the Crystal City location based on the "service."
Came here for restaurant week. I was very happy with my selections- bacon wrapped dates, shrimp, fried potatoes, salmon and chocolate dessert. Even though they are small plates, I left feeling satisfied! Waitress and supporting staff were attentive to filling up water glasses/removing plates and food was delivered hot and timely. Would definitely recommend and hope to go back soon.
I met my friend for lunch; the staff was quite friendly and helpful. If you’ve never been to Jaleo before, don’t be intimidated. They explain the menu, the “family style,” which dishes are best suited for sharing and which aren’t. Everything is delicious; not a clunker on the menu. Parking is a snap and they validate (up to an hour). A terrific experience.
The Restaurant Week Menu was fabulous. I especially loved the beet salad and dates wrapped in bacon. The high ceilings and elaborate wall decorations make this a very special space. The service was fantastic...great teamwork by the wait staff. Our dinner of many courses moved along at just the right pace.
Excellent restaurant week menu! 4 course meal with 4 tapas options per course. We had 4 people, so we got to sample everything! Amazing all around. Plenty of food, and an incredible variety that added to the enjoyment and entertainment value of the evening.
We just keep coming back to Jaleo. It amazes me that this Jose Andres gem is tucked into Crystal City, but we'll take it! We snagged a Restaurant Week reservation during the brief Federal shutdown. One thing I appreciate about Jaleo is its enthusiastic participation in Restaurant Week. We ate incredibly well in a good value week for one of our favorite restaurants. The tapas allow my carnivore husband to indulge in all creatures while I get to veg out (and yes, sometimes I go for a chicken dish or the out of this world bacon-wrapped dates!) Jaleo doesn't dismiss any part of the dining experience: the restaurant is beautiful, staff is well-trained, drinks are inspired, dishes are inventive - but with the sophisticated composition Jose Andres brings which means I'm never left wondering why two flavors were paired, and desserts are a deeply satisfying conclusion to the meal. I suspect we'll be back within the month.
Met up with 3 friends for lunch. We hadn’t seen 1 of our friends in a while so it was a chance to catch up. My friends had the sangria, which they liked enough to order 2 carafes and I had the salt air margarita, which I highly recommend. We shared shrimp, Brussel sprout salad, and omelette, white bean salad, and roasted eggplant and red peppers. Every plate was delicious! We finished the meal with a chocolate flan-mouse type dessert and an apple Charlotte. Again, very tasty. Alex was our waiter and he was awesome! We lingered after we were done eating, and he continued to fill our water and was not bothered by us at all staying at the table.
Always delicious. The bacon wrapped dates are amazing! If you young kids like toddlers there is pretty much nothing on the menu for them. Especially if you have a picky eater. They do have some amazing mashed potatoes they will bring a bowl for your little one!
It was a divine evening celebrating my birthday. We tried the tasting menu after explaining that I don’t eat meat but my husband does. We still got three purely meat dishes which I found a bit disappointing. The scallops with squash and garlic shrimp stand out. We had a great selection of wine and dessert. It was a celebration so we were happy to splurge. It is a bit pricey but a great experience
We booked a table for 7, and then 6 more people wanted to join the party. Jaleo easily accommodated them all with a pleasant table that facilitated conversation. The plates were all delicious, with unusual flavors that worked well together. Our waiter was particularly helpful and friendly. Some in the party had never had tapas before and were uneasy about trying them, but they readily became fans.
I love going to Jaleo. Even so, no place is perfect or perfect for everyone. If you come here thinking you’re going to get a plate piled high with food - bye-bye. These dishes are prepared thoughtfully and with your taste-buds in mind. If I were going to try something for the first time, this is where I’d go! And DO try at least one thing you haven’t tried before.
Here’s a snippet from my most recent visit. We made our own selections from the menu - the goal was to only have items we haven’t tried before - but first, some of their red sangria. (The white sangria is even more amazing when on the menu!) We ordered a trio of cheese plates - each enough for two people - just a tasting though. Everything is so unique and fresh - even the cheese seemed special because of what it was served with - goat’s milk cheese with raisin walnut bread and fig jam - among other items. Yum!
I had recently read something about the gazpacho soup so I had to give that a try. AMAZING (see photo)! A little salty for me, but I use very little salt in my own cooking. My empty bowl is a testament that it wasn’t too salty for me to want to lick the bowl. I didn’t, I just wanted to! You’ll have to order it just to see what’s at the bottom of your bowl when they bring it to the table.
We ordered the warm Brussels sprout salad with oranges, pomegranate, and yogurt. It was yummy as well.
Then the beautifully balanced house made chorizo in olive oil with creamy mashed potatoes. What a delight.
I have to say that my biggest disappointment with this place has always been that I’m not too fond of their desserts - my waste line says thank you! But I’m already planning what I’m going to have on my next visit!
Some extras - there is street parking or an underground parking garage across the street that is free on the weekends. The noise level here is mostly low. I can almost always have a conversation with my dinner partner without raising my voice.
Hostess was a bit clueless. We made reservations for 730 on Open Table, but when we called to say we were going to be a bit late, she said they had no reservation under my name and that they were booked until 9pm. so my sister proceeded to make additional reservations for 745 and 8pm. When we got there, after waiting about 10 minutes to be greeted, she actually did have our original reservation, and the restaurant was practically empty. Just didn't seem like she knew what was going on.
We had an early dinner and everything was great from start to finish. Got lucky with a space out front, we were seated as soon as we arrived, knowledgable server. Every dish was great. Considering it is tapas, we were full with 5-6 different dishes. The sopa de pescado was so delicious. It reminded me of my grandmother's cooking. So much flavor and depth. Warm brussel sprouts were delicious, two shrimp dishes and a special menu item for the day was duck. Heavenly. Moist. Tastes like it was brined, love the thyme and cooked perfectly. We will be back real soon.
Everything was amazing from start to finish! Service, menu, wine list, food...everything! Thrilled beyond words that I could find Envinate wines here! And the mussel dish was one of the most amazing things I’ve ever had. So simple & fresh.
I will absolutely be coming back the next time I’m in town. Thanks for a wonderful evening!
This was our 1st time to Jaleo & the 3 of us thoroughly enjoyed our experience. Our waiter was friendly & after giving us water & taking our drink order he explained the tapas menu to us. The appetizers were delicious but the main meals were outstanding. The menu is pretty extensive so everyone can find something they love. We were all to full to get dessert so we didn't see the dessert menu but I am sure it is as creative as their food.
