Excellent service and superb food!
We went to Jaleo to treat a visitor from Switzerland. We enjoyed the delicious salads and smaller plates of risotto (special) and the rabbit confit. The desserts were outstanding: we had the flan and the very unusual rice pudding, closer to a zabiglione. A really lovely meal which we intend to repeat.
The food here is always wonderful -- this is not fussy food -- it lets the flavors of the great ingredients shine. One of my favorite restaurants in the DC area.
Disappointed. Many tables available and had to wait with a reservation for about 20 minutes. They turned walk-ins away despite having plenty of seating. No drink refills, initial waiter who took our order was rushed and didn't take the full order before trying to leave, food cold when it came out. Really hoping for better. Owner does so many good things in community and would love to support him but customer service needs improvement (waiter who took over was ok and nice but clearly had too many tables) and food quality needs improvement (not hot and very small portions for size (two tiny peppers for $7).
Squid ink paella was absolutely amazing! A must to try (not for the first date..)
Very good food. Service was rather slow and a bit indifferent.
Worst service ever - from the waiter all the way to the manager - horrible service. Almost finished eating by the time drinks finally arrived (after many promises of "they'll be right up". Food order was wrong on two dishes, forgot one dish altogether. No apologies from the waiter. People on both sides of us were equally unhappy. Never going back.
One of our diners was running late so there was a time crunch for the meal itself. The staff was very accommodating on both the front end and tail end. The waitress was very attentive to get the bill ready and paid in a timely manner in order for us to leave as needed.
Jose Andres knows how to put together a restaurant, from the tasty food to the interesting ambient. There was a happy hour menu for us on Sunday and we sat at the bar to enjoy a delicious Moscow Mule and some tapas. Always love some gambas con ajillo. Had mixed feeling about the chorizo wrapped in potato and the croquettes, I think I would have liked something fresher (not fried) and would go with the calamari next time. I've eaten here many times and missed the Bosque Cake which had been guesting on the menu I was told for the month. Can't wait to check out one of their cooking classes.
Food was really bland. Calamari had no salt, and I had this black dipping sauce that I assume was garlic aioli with squid ink. The color was off putting so I didn't eat it. I also got patas bravas, which I normally love. But again, the potatoes were bland and the sauce on it had no taste. The only thing that was really good was the dessert, which was flan. That was really delicious.
We have never had a bad meal at Jaleo. The food is impeccably prepared, beautifully presented, and tastes amazing. We find that 5 small plates plus 1 dessert is perfect for the two of us. We love the food, the energy, and the ambience!
Wonderful place for tapas whether it is patatas bravas, calamari (grilled or deep fried), Spanish cheese and meat plates, and zesty gazpacho.
Lovely service and great food! One of our favorites.
Had a bad experience...2 of our main course didn’t arrive till much later. The server didn’t put it into the system. Test of food is good.
Dinner at Jaleo is always delicious. Many different options on the menu with delicious salads that came in generous portions, mini-hamburgers that are out of this world and tasty, tender scallop bites. The service is outstanding and very friendly. The wine by the glass is a very generous pour. The only negative was that the windows were open (it was a very warm night) and the music was blaring for the benefit of those walking or eating outside. We were first sat by one of these windows and asked to be moved because the music was too loud for us to talk (sorry, but we're old folks). The reception staff very courteously and very smoothly moved us to an inside table where the music was not an issue. Everything we've ever tasted here is excellent, so we will keep going back!
Everytime we eat at Jaleo we enjoy the food and the service. This time we went rather early and even then the place was busy. So others love the restaurant as well. Excellent menu choices which included some favorites and some new dishes. A great meal.
As my date and I started our meal, a fire alarm with the accompanying white blinking lights went off and everyone including us, looked around for some guidance but eventually continued eating. When we enquired with our server (a very polite and young man that is green to the industry) should we be concerned about that fire alarm, his response was; "let me check with my manager."
The alarm was silenced after 3-4 minutes from the initial siren, but the blinking white "disco effect" blinking lights continue even after we finish our meal, paid our check and walked out of this establishment.
Outstanding food. Creative drinks. Wonderful wine list.
Sometimes a bit crowded, but the food is exceptionally good
A very disappointing experience on this visit.
We were seated next to the kitchen and could hear the shouting in the kitchen and the conversations among the wait staff in the room adjacent to the kitchen.
Food delivery was haphazard. We ordered certain dishes at the same time and they were delivered 10 minutes apart.
Terrible service. We waited 15 minutes just to order a drink. Then it took another 15 to get those drinks. By the time we saw our waiter next, we had been there for 40+ minutes and decided to order all of our plates at once since we never knew when we'd see him next. Instead of pacing them out - they all came at once. At the end of the night it took almost a half hour after our dessert menus were dropped off to get the check and have them run my card.
On top of all that, most every dish was underwhelming. This place has gone downhill.
I've eaten here a number of times, and this was the first time that the meal wasn't really great. Everything was fine, but not up to the standard I've had here before. Even some of dishes that we have had before (like patatas bravas) just felt like the cook wasn't really giving it their all.
The only negative was that one of the main courses that we ordered was not good. We ordered the skirt steak, which was fine, but the paella with squid ink had way too much of the ink, we did not eat much of it. Thankfully we were full from the other courses, and the deserts were good!
Disappointing meal — had the tasting menu at $55 and some items were good, most were basically drenched in olive oil (not in a good way) and the total impression was too much, too rich, and not memorable at all. Our waiter seemed befuddled when we asked for a Ribera del Duero recommendation; eventually we got someone who knew a bit about wine but hardly impressive. Have been a fan of this place and it’s been a while since I’ve been, and standards have slipped.
I have been a fan of Jaleo for years. Now unfortunately I get the feel of a "chain" and some of the food strikes me as having been prepared in a commercial kitchen, packaged and heated or fried before serving-- ie, bacon wrapped dates, croquettas. I now know of several tapas places with better food.
The food and service was excellent, but the area where we were seated was very cold. Our table was at the back of restaurant near the door that leads to the patio area. Will come back, but will not sit near the back.
I haven't been to the Bethesda Jaleo in a few years. I live 35 miles away. I've had some wonderful meals there and in DC, but this one was lackluster, as was the service. For instance, the dates with bacon were mostly breading and had very little flavor, other than the sauce. Quite disappointing. I would go again (it's an old favorite). But if I had a second meal like this one, I'd probably cross it off my list of go-to dependable restaurants.
Arrived and was seated quickly and water glasses were promptly filled, but we then sat for 20 minutes without a visit from a waitperson or anyone else. When we asked a passing waitress about the delay, we got serious attitude, but no explanation. As it turned out, this same waitress returned a few minutes later as she was our server. The rest of the meal was awkward as she barely communicated, but the food was good as usual. Disappointing for a Jose Andres restaurant as the service is usually good.
Excellent, authentic modern spanish cuisine. Equal to anything served in Madrid. Portions are small, and the food is a tad expensive, but everying is delightful and unique. Uncultured souls/nonadventurous palates need not apply.
Good decent food. My neighborhood restaurant. Can count on Jose Andreas for consistency.
We had an early dinner prior to Ute Lemper at the Kennedy Center. The food at Jaleo is quite good and the tapas gives you the opportunity to sample a variety of dishes. The appetizers and Queso are outstanding. The octopus is really good, and the baby squid is pretty good. And everyone must try the coquettes with jambon as well as any other spanish ham item on the menu. Don't forget a little bit of the veggie options . . . we will be back again, and again. The desserts are good, and not just the flan. The basque special dessert is phenomenal. And they make very decent espresso. Go. Enjoy. We made the concert on time in spite of a reluctance to leave Jaleo behind.
Very accommodating, highly informed staff, most importantly the food was excellent. Enjoyed by the adventurous and the conservative alike. Good for vegetarians, seafood lovers and meat lovers. Really good. Not cheap but good value considering what you are having.
Really overpriced for what you get it seems.
Food and service great as always. Noise was unbearable, not “energizing.” I was going to invite some friends but I know they could not hear over the noise, while I simply detest it. Will revert to my usual pattern of lunch on a quiet day.
The food was terrific. And so were the cocktails and sangria. The service was also excellent. We had a great time and I look forward to going back.
Loved the food & ambience along wirh rhebxompany of my two adult children.
I love Spanish tapas and Jose Andres, so it is a win win for me. I have been at Jaleo, several times, but my friends had not (group of 8). Their comment was that the food was delicious, but it is pricey for the amount of food you get. One of the dishes I ordered, was the "paella de fideos", and the flavor was good, but hardly got any seafood, my friends had the same observation.
Our main server was rather uninterested in giving us much attention or eye contact, although his bussers did a good job bringing out the food & drinks and clearing away. I asked the main server for a dessert menu but never got it, just the bill and a perfunctory thanks. It was the only time I’ve had such unenthusiastic service at Jaleo so I chalked it up to him having a bad day.
Outstanding food and service, as always. Best restaurant in Bethesda.
My boyfriend and I had a wonderful experience at Jaleo. Our server was attentive and kind, and made our meal really special. The food was creative and delicious, we especially enjoyed the Salmon tartare and trout roe cone. We will be back soon!
