Room lovely with lotsa of dark wood. Service was fine. Dining Month food was OK, but first course was too hot to eat and second course was barely lukewarm. Best thing was the perfect table by a picture window so I could see Portland walk and roll by.
I came in from out of state and found Jake's Grill through the Portland Dining Month website.
The food was delicious and service was fantastic, so happy to see the options on the Portland Dining Month menu. I would definitely come back again!
The service was wonderful: she was cheerful and attentive. We came because it was Dining Month. The choices on this prix fix menu were wonderful. The rockfish was beautifully prepared. The cocktails were wonderful. The pea soup was delicious; and the dessert was divine. We will return.
Great service. Great window seat. Menu had less options than I would have liked for a brunch.
Food was wonderful, great wine selection from our 3rd server. Perhaps due to the busy Saturday night, we did not have the best wait service. Even with a reservation, we were seated later, and never had the same server. Made it difficult at the end of the evening to pay. But great when they did show up to our table.
The service was probably the worst we’ve experienced in a long time. The wife and I went there for a St Patrick’s Day dinner and, after being seated, we had to wait about 10 mins before our waitress brought by water. And, when she did, she just dropped them off at our table without saying a word and moved on. After about another 10 mins, she can back and asked if we wanted to order something (only then did we realize she must have been our waitress). I guess pre-dinner drinks aren’t considered there? At any rate, we each ordered a meal and a drink and eventually the drinks made their way to us (by then our waters were empty and we had to ask for a refill).
Upon receiving our meals, she indicated she would be back to check on us and, this is where the frustration climaxed. Despite our drinks being empty and my wife wanting more ketchup, the waitress either walked right by our table or stopped at the table next to us many times without checking on us. We even put our empty glasses at the edge of the table as a test...test failed! We didn’t see her again until we went to the front to ask for someone to bring us our bill so that we could leave. They asked who our waitress was and, at that point, I realized that she never even introduced herself and that we didn’t know her name!
It was an overall failure on Jake’s part to provide a nice experience for the prices they charge. Never say never...but, we (probably) will never be back.
We went for restaurant week and every course was delicious and beautiful presentation. Love the wood trim and huge old bar.
Tony is an excellent waiter
Steaks were outstanding!
I went here for my birthday- visiting from Seattle, I wanted to go some place special and Jake's completely delivered. My boyfriend and I got a seat by the window, but where also able to take in the restaurant itself. Great ambiance. Excellent service. But more than anything...the food. I got the buttermilk fried chicken and I would reorder this a million times. Reasonably priced as well; maybe to be saved for a special occasion but definitely nothing outrageous. I would come here again.
Everything was excellent. Service was great. Not one problem. Great cocktails and food. Great happy hour too.
Food was ok but for the price probably wouldn’t go back for it, however the dessert was EVERYTHING, quite possibly the best dessert I’ve ever had!
My hubby and I had the 3 for $33 special for Portland Dining Month. My hubby chose the split pea and ham soup, and the boar and elk wild game ragout, with tagliatelle pasta, San Marzano tomatoes and ricotta salata for his entree. I had the shaved vegetable salad with heirloom carrots, Chioggia beets, baby arugula, radishes and ricotta salata for an appetizer, and the blackened Alaskan rockfish with tempura lobster risotto cake, saffron tomato broth and fine herb salad for my entree. The dessert choice we both decided on was the bananas Foster with chocolate cake, house made marshmallow, vanilla bean ice cream and caramelized banana. Oh wow! That house made marshmallow was AMAZING!
In my mind, Jake's has been a central culinary attraction for Portland for many years. It had been several years since I had been back, and to be honest, I was pretty disappointed. Food was just OK and service was inattentive and slow. For $30+ a plate, it should have been better. I love the ambiance, but the service really played a role in this review.
We had elderly parents meeting us and I called earlier in the day to find out about valet parking and they game me wrong information. They was very stressful and we had to end up going over to smart park and get them parked. The service was quite slow as well.
Celebrated a birthday. Our server was absolutely amazing. I went with the March dining meal which was delicious. My husband went with the New York steak which was seasoned well and cooked perfectly.
Great service- super engaged and friendly staff. Would recommend for special occasion or a just because evening very relaxing.
The usual excellent service and food. Room was quiet enough to have a business discussion. All went well.
Good food. Great service
Last minute get together for the three of us. As always, Jake’s Grill was excellent. Absolutely phenomenal food and the service was spot on. I had the Salmon served with garlic potatoes and asparagus- Absolutely delicious!
- We shared the berry cobbler 😋
Portland Dining Month Dinner, but you have to ask for that specific menu, otherwise you'll only receive the standard. Dinner was good, the desert was fantastic....our server though was obviously put out that we were on the Portland Dining Month menu, even though we ordered cocktails and wine by the glass.
We booked the reservation as part of Portland Dining Month for a party of 6. However, our server was visibly annoyed when we requested the special menu. We had to ask for the special menu twice. The fried cauliflower appetizer was delicious. The rockfish was salty and portion was small. There was enough parsley on the plates to make a bouquet. The pasta dish was better seasoned, but also small in the portion size. By 8:15p, they had ran out of the banana foster dessert with no substitute offered, so we all had the passion fruit chocolate tarts. With drinks and all, we averaged about $50 pp. The positive of the evening was the delightful host upon arrival.
We would not return for future Portland Dining Month, as it seemed to have annoyed the server and the food quality was poor. Not worth the $33 when there are so many better options. I would only return for happy hour .
We opted for the oysters on the half-shell... delicious! My filet mignon was ideal, and we both loved out caesars... bartender put together some great rye old-fashioneds... loved the service and our seat by the window. Nice start to the evening!
Servers knew their menu and portion sizes, very attentive but not intrusive.
Food was excellent, flavorful asparagus, perfect mashed potatoes, and great steak.
Service was prompt and friendly. Food was very good. Nice place to discuss business matters.
After an initial mixup with reservations, the overall experience was enjoyable. The food is standard fare, nothing special. Wait staff is very friendly and attentive. Hostess desk staff is less than professional. Diners pay for the location and ambience, which is lovely.
We celebrated our February birthdays with delicious omelets, tasty fruit and a raspberry jam for our biscuits that was extraordinary. Thanks, y’all.
Hello! I tend to not leave negative reviews but I was a bit disappointed by my experience on Friday evening. I’ve been coming to Jake’s for years with my family so chose it for a birthday celebration Friday - before a large NIKE event. The experience was odd! I felt like the server didn’t really take us seriously if that makes sense. I felt rushed through my meal and she tried to take my dinner plate away before I was finished numerous times.
Overall, the food was good and the ambiance amazing, just wish I didn’t feel like I was annoying the server the entire meal!
Felt the need to leave this note.
Our waitress was the best. Our birthday guest ordered the rockfish, first was over cooked, she was brought another and it was not any better, however not because of the cooking. The flavor was very strong, did not taste fresh just not good
The steaks the rest ordered were terrific. May come back but definitely not for seafood.
I go there a lot, and always enjoy it. This particular time, the restaurant and bar were both packed; I got one of the last two bar stools, and more people coming in. The bartenders were amazing, working fast and hard, and still taking time to be friendly. The bartender that waited on me was Raymond, and he was absolutely fantastic! I got outstanding service, in spite of the fact that he was extremely busy. I enjoyed conversations with others sitting around me at the bar, and they were all quite happy, too.
It was a nice meal
Server was very sassy and rude when we got our food me and my dates steak were the same inside almost raw and my girlfriend ordered medium done while I ordered medium rare when returned to us my girlfriends steak was burnt and look like charcoal mine was slightly better.the waitress kept sass throughout and giving us rude looks comment oh finally done when we finished and took 10 minutes to finish paying with my card I gave her
Food was served quickly and the server was very nice. Have come to Jake's for years.
I had a great time with my friend and the food and service were great. Great portions and cant tell you how well the staff treats everyone..
Although the menu was limited for V-day, the food was top notch. The server gave some of the best customer service I've had, he was very polite and attentive. This will definitely be a regular date night place.
We reserved early the same day for lunch, and were very satisfied with our meals. I had the beef dip on a gluten free bun, and it was very good. Lovely room, good service. I would definitely recommend this and would like to go back for dinner sometime.
We thought that the food was outstanding. I had the Ribeye and my wife had the Manhattan Oscar --- both were excellent. And cooked as requested. Our Server Rob was friendly very knowledgeable and efficient.
The food, service and environment were all great! Deducting a star because a member of the party’s steak was under cooked which resulted in them not eating with us but overall I’d highly recommend this place!
The food was amazing with nice portions. Our waitress, Taylor, was amazing! It was a great night!
Ate at Jake's before going to the Portland Armory for a play. What a great night. The dining room was beautiful at Jake's, my salmon was delicious, and the service was wonderful. Will definitely eat there again when I visit Portland in the future.
Very nice server and great food. People watching was quite entertaining.
During our business lunch some random man stopped outside our window table staring at us and tried to take our picture!
