It was my husband's birthday so we made a reservation and went to Jake's for dinner. We had not been there in awhile, but we always enjoy it. Getting a reservation is a good idea because you will get one of the nicer tables - we always like the tables by the front window. The service is great, and the atmosphere and decor remind you of an older, classic vibe with all of the wood trim and other decor. The food is great as always and the menu changes often. I had the bleu cheese and candied walnut salad with white balsamic vinaigrette and the blackened rockfish with a risotto cake and corn salad. My husband had the short rib stroganoff and the split pea with ham soup. He had the "Beautiful Tea" (cognac, grand marnier, orange tea) for "dessert" and I had the caramel apple tart with ice cream. I love chocolate desserts, but the only two on their menu had espresso in them and I absolutely detest coffee. It is very easy to get to Jake's on the MAX and streetcar, which means you don't have to deal with parking or downtown traffic. There is a streetcar stop directly across the street and the MAX is one block away.

Somewhat confusing as I made reservations for here but my daughter ended up a few blocks away at sister restaurant with same name. I walked to there and actually ate at one on 12th

Poor presentation and mediocre food. Stuffed salmon comparable to frozen version from Safeway. Not the M&S that we are used to in Seattle. Portland needs to up its game

We took my mother-in-law to Jakes for her 80th birthday and it was delightful! The treatment from the hostess our server was personal yet professional and our menus even had a "Happy 80th Birthday" heading! My Rockfish was cooked to perfection, the demi-glase and onion strings a true compliment to the meal. My husband had fried oysters that were crispy and well seasoned, the birthday girl's ham and split pea soup was a good density and flavorful, her Cobb Salad quite agreeable. We didn't go for the pricing yet were pleasantly surprised by the reasonable cost of the food! The atmosphere is old school classic. Overall a wonderful experience!

I asked for a table good for conversation and it was. Large enough for two large people, not crowed and decent noise level. The oysters were excellent, as were the fries. The service was exceptionally good.

We made Easter brunch reservations but they didn't have us on the list. We were at first seated for the regular brunch instead of the Easter brunch. Directions then to the 4th floor were unclear and we wandered up and down the stairs for a bit. With me on a cane this was a bit of a challenge. The banquet room was lovely but huge which didn't create a cozy ambience. Some of the food was good but slot was mediocre. The price for this was steep - $117 for two people. Overall it was not worth it to us. Sorry to give Jake's a bad review this time.

Menu limited compared to when we were there last in September. This would still be our ‘go to’ place for special occasions dining in Portland. Holds special memory— visiting our son who attends university here

Food was barely warm. Had to ask for more coffee. Other than that server was very nice, friendly.

I called ahead to see if there was valet parking, was told yes but nothing mentioned it was around the block through the hotel. And that it cost $15!!! I had asked on the phone if there was a charge and he said he wasn’t sure!!

Loved sitting by the fireplace.

Unfortunately, we did not enjoy our experience with Jakes Grill this past Saturday.
We were seated next to the fireplace, which was charming enough, but there were 2-birthday party tables in the same room with us.
While we appreciate the fun those groups were having, they stole 90% of our waitress’s attention (Hannah) and we felt neglected by the end of the evening.
It seemed odd to place those parties together when the other half of the restaurant was almost empty.
In addition, the food was mediocre for the price and the seats were uncomfortable.
We would most likely not go back, since we tried to share our concerns with the host when we were leaving, and he seemed only mildly interested.

I ended up going twice during Portland Dining Month because the menu seemed so good I wanted to try all options. The food was delicious overall. Also they are very accommodating around things like last minute reservations and adding or removing a person. It does get noisy. Most of us had the fried appetizer, which was delicious. The one person who had the salad revaed about it. The person who had the split pea and ham soup said it was good but not that different from good ones they'd had elsewhere. First night we all had the seafood dish and it was wonderful - healthy and decadent at the same time, delicious, original. The second time I had the Ragout pasta which was lovely as well. Desserts were also wonderful although a bit unexpected. The tort - we expected a light dessert on the healthier side; it was richer than expected, but delicious. The bananas foster type dessert didn't look like the usual, more like a pastry with a few bananas on the side, but delicious. The first night we ordered onion rings to share - they are smaller, lighter than the usual bar food type. We all ended up getting doggy bags for some of the rest of the meal. So it ended up being an even better deal than dining month. Great wine recommendations for a decent price. One thing to think about: if you're there with people you really want to spend time with and chat, let the wait staff know; otherwise, the food comes at a faster pace than you might expect. And I'm sure that wonderful staff would accommodate!

We met friends there for breakfast. First time there for breakfast, very pleased with the food. Have been to Jake's for dinner several times and remember one of the best steaks I've experienced . Will probably make it back for breakfast at least 2 or 3 more times this summer. Several items on the breakfast menu I'd like to try.

Room lovely with lotsa of dark wood. Service was fine. Dining Month food was OK, but first course was too hot to eat and second course was barely lukewarm. Best thing was the perfect table by a picture window so I could see Portland walk and roll by.

The service was wonderful: she was cheerful and attentive. We came because it was Dining Month. The choices on this prix fix menu were wonderful. The rockfish was beautifully prepared. The cocktails were wonderful. The pea soup was delicious; and the dessert was divine. We will return.

Food was wonderful, great wine selection from our 3rd server. Perhaps due to the busy Saturday night, we did not have the best wait service. Even with a reservation, we were seated later, and never had the same server. Made it difficult at the end of the evening to pay. But great when they did show up to our table.

The service was probably the worst we’ve experienced in a long time. The wife and I went there for a St Patrick’s Day dinner and, after being seated, we had to wait about 10 mins before our waitress brought by water. And, when she did, she just dropped them off at our table without saying a word and moved on. After about another 10 mins, she can back and asked if we wanted to order something (only then did we realize she must have been our waitress). I guess pre-dinner drinks aren’t considered there? At any rate, we each ordered a meal and a drink and eventually the drinks made their way to us (by then our waters were empty and we had to ask for a refill).

Upon receiving our meals, she indicated she would be back to check on us and, this is where the frustration climaxed. Despite our drinks being empty and my wife wanting more ketchup, the waitress either walked right by our table or stopped at the table next to us many times without checking on us. We even put our empty glasses at the edge of the table as a test...test failed! We didn’t see her again until we went to the front to ask for someone to bring us our bill so that we could leave. They asked who our waitress was and, at that point, I realized that she never even introduced herself and that we didn’t know her name!

It was an overall failure on Jake’s part to provide a nice experience for the prices they charge. Never say never...but, we (probably) will never be back.

I went here for my birthday- visiting from Seattle, I wanted to go some place special and Jake's completely delivered. My boyfriend and I got a seat by the window, but where also able to take in the restaurant itself. Great ambiance. Excellent service. But more than anything...the food. I got the buttermilk fried chicken and I would reorder this a million times. Reasonably priced as well; maybe to be saved for a special occasion but definitely nothing outrageous. I would come here again.

My hubby and I had the 3 for $33 special for Portland Dining Month. My hubby chose the split pea and ham soup, and the boar and elk wild game ragout, with tagliatelle pasta, San Marzano tomatoes and ricotta salata for his entree. I had the shaved vegetable salad with heirloom carrots, Chioggia beets, baby arugula, radishes and ricotta salata for an appetizer, and the blackened Alaskan rockfish with tempura lobster risotto cake, saffron tomato broth and fine herb salad for my entree. The dessert choice we both decided on was the bananas Foster with chocolate cake, house made marshmallow, vanilla bean ice cream and caramelized banana. Oh wow! That house made marshmallow was AMAZING!

In my mind, Jake's has been a central culinary attraction for Portland for many years. It had been several years since I had been back, and to be honest, I was pretty disappointed. Food was just OK and service was inattentive and slow. For $30+ a plate, it should have been better. I love the ambiance, but the service really played a role in this review.
