They still do it well! Firstly our server Tucker was fantastic. Attentive, professional, funny and quick. We were sitting in a dining window which was nice though not quite their bar vibe we looked for. However, 6 people dining at once in a pandemic...yeah, we were just fine. The food was, as is always, tasty, flavorful, and solid. I love there burger for its classic attributes. They put the flavor in the beef not with Knick-knacky extras like a Red Robin or something. We had the halibut, chicken tacos, calamari, sautéed mushrooms and the chef was gracious in extending some vegan options to our guest. BTW: order the grilled asparagus...the char makes all the difference.
Overall, was very happy and pleased with our first outing after COVID reopening. In fact I’m going back this week with other friends!
Even though Jake’s Grill still has a weekend brunch menu posted on their website, they are not actually serving brunch, only lunch.
We enjoyed our meal and were grateful to get a table through Open Table. Could use some more vegetarian options, though.
Just re opened so it was a bit clunky .
It was good ! Only helpful advise was the wait time a bit long because they had to re cook my pork chop that got burned but they apologized and we were ok with that -
Father’s Day
Excellent dinner for two. Food was served promptly and prepared as requested. Menu choice is varied. Comfortable and quiet seating in a booth. Our server, Jennifer, was very pleasant and attentive, without being in the least intrusive.
Jake’s is our place to go when we want to feel we have had a “special” evening.
Service was impeccable, relaxed and not pushy. Excellent flavor on food items. Steak was seasoned and cooked perfectly. We managed to get a night out the day before all restaurants were closed. Glad our last evening out For a few weeks was so special
March dining month options are terrific! 3 for $33.
We had a nice, competent waitress And enjoy the food that we ordered. However we discovered a couple days later that they were part of the March dining month in Portland. We did not see any menus or signs indicating they were participating and were not told that. We would’ve loved to have tried the offerings on that menu.
We are senior citizens with hearing difficulties. Our booth was very quiet and we could enjoy good conversation without difficulties. We were there during Dining month. The menu was very good value. We all enjoyed our dishes. Our server was very helpful
Reliably tasty food in a pleasant downtown setting with cheerfully attentive service..
About once a quarter, my friends from one of my previous jobs get together for dinner, and on March 7th, we decided to meet at Jakes Grill. My wife and I have been here a couple of times previously and loved the food and the service both. This time was no exception. The food was delicious, and our waitress was very attentive and knowledgable. It was a great experience as always!
Not happy, the food was not cooked per our order and the server didn’t know we ordered the steak cooked to different levels , not the same waiter that took the order. Mine was over cooked, then I sent it back and it came back very rare. I had ordered med rare. Very noisy, out little table of four was placed on the middle of the room with other tables of eight. Will only go back to eat at the bar next time.
Servers/bartender were not very attentive. Spent a lot of time waiting to be checked out, orders taken, etc...
The service was great, but food was not fresh (salmon and veggies) and the place seriously needs an update I switched 2 chairs and both were shaking. The restaurant is old and feels old. I will not go back.
Another business lunch that went very well.
Such a good place to visit - nice and quiet with nobody to eavesdrop.
Always one of my favorite "go-to's". Consistently excellent. I wish you would bring back one item you used to have from your menu. The chicken Brie cheese sandwich on a French roll bun!! Can't hurt to ask !?
Had my own menu wishing me a Happy Birthday!
Really good food and service. Friendly atmosphere as well.
I have had a bad experience here five years ago and have never gone back. I had the opportunity to do that yesterday and found that Jake’s has improved dramatically and I will happily return.
Took 45 minutes to get our entrees after our salads
My 16 oz ny was tough and had gristle through it.
Our server was apologetic, the problem was the kitchen.
Big fan of Jake's and always have been, the food at McCormick's and Schmick's in Bridgeport location is higher quality. We shared the a Wedge Salad, Porterhouse and Scallops.
I guess a reservation means nothing. We had to wait 20 minutes for our table.
Our waitress was very nice though, but it was super busy and I felt forgotten about several times. Even when waiting for extra limes for my drink.
The redeeming qualities were the good food and our waitress.
Valentines
It was a busy night and the service was a little slow. Took a very long time to get drinks and food.
Restaurant said they were out of food when we arrived for our reservation
We eat out a lot. We like and appreciate good food. We were very excited to eat here, as we had never been before. It was valentines day, so they were having a 3 course special menu, which looked good. Soup/salad, entree, and dessert. We are not eating sweets so they did exchange us an appetizer for our two desserts, which was very gracious and we appreciated very much. That being said, we ordered the surf and turf entree and the rockfish entree. The surf and turf was $56. The steak was large, but over cooked and very tough. It came with 2 very small shrimp that were super dry and over cooked as well. Veggies were.....meh. The rockfish was cooked well, but drowned in a red pepper coulis that overpowered all taste of the fish, unfortunately. I asked for extra veggies in place of the risotto cake, and there were hardly any veggies, and also they tasted.....meh.
Our water glasses were empty most of the meal.
We are polite, nice people. Not used to giving bad reviews. But we were very disappointed in this iconic portland restaurant, with a sign in the window saying best steak in portland. We disagree. Sorry to have to say it.
We wont be back. Too many other amazing options.
Mediocre food and mediocre service. Prime rib was cold, rolls were rock hard. Disappointed
Always the best service and food
Food was pretty good! Service wasn’t the greatest. Ambience was perfect!
My reservations were deleted on Valentine’s Day. I don’t believe they would have sat my girlfriend and I if I had not complained.
As a Portland staple. Jake's grill didn't disappoint. The quality of the food was as incredible as ever and both of us went away more than full.
I have some gripes, though:
1. Even though we had a reservation, we were made to wait over 30 minutes for our table.
2. Our table was very uncomfortably situated at an angle in the middle of the room. Servers kept bumping into my wife's chair, and her back was hurting by the end of the night.
3. Nowhere online did it state that the menu would be a fixed three course meal. This was frustrating, as my wife isn't a big eater and we had already made plans for desert elsewhere.
I think these issues have more to do with the way the restaurant is managed, and less to do with the servers themselves, who were all very kind and attentive. I'd still recommend Jake's Grill, but not on a holiday when it's likely to be crowded--it doesn't seem their management understands how to handle these situations.
We must also say here that it was St. Valentines day, and there were people jammed in the doorway where we stood for almost an hour beyond our reservation time. The Open Table website showed openings at 1845 but there were several couples and groups there at that time with that same appointment time. It seemed that they were overbooking and pretty calm and collected about it. But we were within 5 minutes of leaving. Dinner was solid, so was the service and the fixed price dinner was served hot and ready within 10 minutes of our order - no problem there. Our server was extremely smooth and made us feel right at home as soon as she saw us sit down - no problems there. But the experience might have been perfect if not for the lobby wait with 50 of our "best friends".
We made a reservation but had to wait a long time.
Our service was exceptional and the food was outstanding. We were there for Valentine’s Day and they had a three course meal option, regular menu didn’t seem available. The food was great but the plates seemed hap hazard in presentation and mass produced, which makes sense as it was a very busy holiday.
Dinner for two was expensive but not unreasonable. Would love to come back and try the regular menu, the lobster and crab dip was incredible.
Valentines bust! They took on extra tables but the service and ambience suffered for it!
Great place to relax while eating . The service was awesome and enticing
Valentine’s Day dinner was a hit overall. The salad was passable, not as crisp as I’ve had there in the past, but the rib eye was cooked perfectly and was so delicious. I chose the blood orange panna cotta for dessert and it was super smooth and extremely tasty! My wife had the crab/shrimp/Brie-stuffed salmon and the chocolate mousse cake. She loved them both. Super good job Jake’s Grill! Thanks for making the first part of Valentine’s Day special!
We had reservations yet were seated (after 10 minutes) at a tiny table with a bumped out portion of wall that limited my ability to sit comfortably. Waiters faces loomed over us during dinner because they stood at the cash register on the other side of this wall. Waiters bumped my arm repeatedly as they continually passed hurriedly.
