About Jacob Wirth

We are the 2nd oldest restaurant in Boston and the longest consecutively running tradition in the city. The original round mahogany tables and bar have welcomed one and all both young and old for over 142 years. Share a meal and moment in history where the people who built Boston did. Where Larry Bird came after walking off the court his last night of being a Boston Celtic. Most recently where Hollywood has found inspiration featuring Jacob Wirth in "Knight and Day" and "The Company Man." Where Boston"s Big Dig was drawn on napkin... Hey when you're 130 years old see if you get everything right!
We strive for great service here but sometimes things do not always go as planned. Both good and bad we would like to hear your experience and feedback. These comments can be sent to mfitzgerald@jacobwirth.com Thank you in advance!

Food is OK but not great, service was spotty. But the ancient setting and the experience and the mix of people is why we go. Just fun to do every once in a while, and very convenient for pre-theatre dining.

Very colorful authentic, historical, friendly place to have a beer and some delicious comfort food. Menu has something to please everyone. The sweet potato fries are magnificent!

We read the piece in the Globe about it being sold soon.. maybe.. So decided to go eat there once more. I liked it, and so did friend who joined us, but my husband didn't. It's a bit heavy on the meat and stodge, but the waiter was great.. first the bus-person accidentally knocked over a water glass and then my friend did, but we all got into wiping it up and joking. The singalong book looks great but this wasn't a night for that.. not the right crowd. I'd come again and order something fairly small. Not a place for intimate conversation but that's not what we were after

The place was really nice and had lots of history. Be sure to read the story of the place on the menu. Having eaten German food before, and love it, we found this place while on vacation for our 20th anniversary. The price was fair and we got a lot of food. The German beer on tap was great, dark ale is my favorite! The pork wiener schnitzel was breaded very well but the pork was not pounded and ended up a little tough, but still good. The cabbage, sausage, potato cakes, potato salad and apple strudel were all great. The plate of spaetzle, I mean plate because it covered it under the schnitzel, was super super super good! Go and enjoy a great German meal, but have fun trying to park :)

Food was served faster then a drive thru McDonald's. The meals were not great. Would not recommend this place for a meal, but did like the atmosphere for a quick drink

Great food . The waiter was nice but seemed to be handling too many tables . We had a reservation and were seated and weren’t even acknowledged for 15 mins . Any refills etc we had to flag down the waiter . He was nice but it was clear he was handling too many tables . The food was good

Spotty service, sub-par food. My husband's medium-rare burger was bright pink and mushy, completely raw (not even warm) in some parts. He asked to have it cooked a bit more and it took 10-15 mins for it to be returned to the table. No apology or explanation was offered and we were one of maybe 3 tables at the restaurant, so not a busy day. We asked the waitress for menu guidance due to an allergy in our party and she didn't have any ideas or inclination to help. My butternut squash and goat cheese tower was just...gross. Barely cooked squash with no flavor, heaped with cold goat cheese on a plate of sad, limp spinach. Dressing was too thick to pour or apply to the food. If we hadn't been in a hurry to get to a show, I would have asked to speak to a manager. Grew up going to Jake Wirth's, but it's not the same. Totally disappointing experience.

Jacob Wirth's is a steady, solid, Boston institution . Great beers, great atmosphere, great German food. Our waiter was less than on the ball, but that's unusual for this restaurant. It's worth the trip, especially around Christmas and New Year's.

Service was poor even though there were very few patrons in the restaurant and plenty of staff. It took a long time to place an order and plates + glasses we not removed, just accumulated on the table (we ended up putting most of them on neighboring empty tables). In the first hour + we were there the restaurant was about 20% full.

The restaurant was unheated on a 25 degree night. I'm sure the staff couldn't do anything about it but to ignore the fact completely as guests are huddled in their jackets was, well, humorous. Our schedule did not permit us to go anywhere else, but if we had known in advance that the heat was broken I'm sure we (and probably a lot of others) would have gone somewhere else. It would have been courteous for the restaurant to have given that warning to its patrons, and I would remain a fan.

Not a bad place for drinks with friends, but not something that we thought we had booked for a special night. The food was good, but it’s still a bar. Bar atmosphere, bar food. Don’t expect anything more than that. As long as you don’t, it’s a neat place.

Yummy food, including some for vegetarians, good beer, wonderful ambience (visually), but the noise level is awful--which it wasn't in the 80s/90s. There must be people who like not being able to hear each other, but I haven't met any during the decades of this creepy fad. Boston and Cambridge are full of restaurants I'd go to often if I could talk with my dinner companion(s). NYC got over it, we can too.

I hadn't been to Jacob Wirth in at least 20 years but my husband had wanted to go so off we went. What was funny, especially in hindsight, is that I had to secure my reservation with a credit card, but it must be that good that they need to know that you intend to keep your reservation. We arrived and were immediately taken to our table, and immediately I realized that my expectations were too high. Great beer menu if you are looking for likely 40+ varieties, 4 or 5 "types" of wines (no vineyards listed, just white, red...etc), and an extensive menu. Likely if you enjoy German food that would be another reason to enjoy Jacob Wirth. I went with what I thought would be safe: a burger with Boursin and mushrooms. The bun was average and not worth eating, the burger and Boursin and mushrooms were fine, the lettuce was old and wilted and the mashed potatoes were like flaked potatoes rehydrated. I understand why it's not someplace that I'll ever return to but would be rated highly by many, but it wasn't for me.

Fantastic night singing with Mel and the other patrons! Saw this place on Chronicle a little over a year ago and have made attending a tradition. It's a blast! I highly recommend giving it a try--especially with a group of friends. We went with a party of 15 and fun was had by all--ages 5-70.

We have been here several times. The food was delicious as always, but on this visit we received the worst service I have ever had when dining at any restaurant. Our waiter basically ignored us the whole time, pretty much after he found out we had a voucher we were using to pay for the meal. We asked for water several times and he never brought it to us, but was very attentive to the other tables around us. As I already mentioned, the food has been outstanding every time we’ve gone to Jacob Wirth but I’m not sure I’d go back after the terrible service experience.

My boyfriend and I went here for our anniversary and it was amazing! The ambiance and food were fantastic. We had grilled bratwurst and it was very authentic and tasty. We were a little worried about the noise level so we sat a further away from the piano and the noise level was perfect for conversing. Can’t wait to come back!

The experience was disappointing. It was a Saturday night at 6pm before the shows and the place was only about 2/3 full, which seemed odd at the time. Our service was not good and I felt like the place was dirty. Every time we ordered the same drink, it came out in a different glass. We had to take our own utensils off of other empty tables. My husband had the German food and said that it was great. The rest of us had different types of salad which were just ok. My husband had gone here many times when he was younger and was raving about the place. The rest of us would not recommend it to our friends.
