About Jack's Oyster House
For nearly a century, Jack’s has been an integral part of Albany’s landscape. Long considered the hot spot for politicians and the famous, Jack’s ambiance is reminiscent of the clubby New York style restaurants so in vogue today.
Opened in 1913 by Jack Rosenstein, the restaurant has been continuously operated by the same family and is now under the direction of grandson, Brad. Joined by Brad is Executive Chef Larry Schepici. Together, they work to create the ultimate dining experience for you each and every time you visit. In their dedication to the tradition of Jack’s, they have developed a menu to satisfy their faithful clientele as well as delight a new generation of Jack’s customers. Chef Schepici's exciting and unique cooking style, along with our staffs' warmth and hospitality, will make for many memorable dining moments.

Jack's Oyster House Ratings and Reviews
Our server was totally inattentive throughout the whole night. Luckily, we were sitting near the bar and we were able to get other waiters to help us out. He seemed too spread out geographically and never made it to our table. Wine list is seriously lacking. There are only a few choices and none of them were good.
The food at Jack's was great, and definitely the best part of the experience. The service was good, but after checking far too often in our first few minutes, there was a lengthy gap before we were finally able to order. The atmosphere and decor are classic, but a bit cold; literally and figuratively.
Jack's is a fantastic local venue in downtown Albany, NY. This is a nice place to dine for lunch. They have the usual lunch fare on their menu and also feature specials. My favorite is when they serve a lunch dish with two different kinds of fish. Their soups are absolutely amazing as well.
I would recommended any of their beef or seafood dishes for dinner. The steaks are always cooked to perfection and the seafood is fresh. The portions are perfect and everything is served in a delightful presentation. I ordered a lobster tail the other night and it was literally the biggest lobster tail I have ever dined on!
I cannot say enough about the wonderful staff of Jack's Oyster House. Everyone is professional, welcoming and friendly. Jack's is a place where you get the fine dining experience from every angle. I highly recommend.
The service and our waiter were excellent, other then that, the experience was disappointing. The atmosphere is dreary at best. The restaurant is in need of a serious make over. Everything just seemed dark and cold with very little color anywhere. It was also very cold temperature wise. We were freezing the whole time.
The food was excellent but extremely overpriced. I understand going to a higher end restaurant is going to be expensive but there were only 2 of us and a five year old. Our bill including tax and tip was over $180.00. That is insane! The portions were rather small also, especially the salad, for the money spent.
We were looking for a restaurant close to the Times Union Center and were intrigued by the reviews & History behind Jack's. Yes, it is expensive, but the service & quality of the food was exceptional - 4 of us had lunch before the TSO show. My wife wanted oyster stew, which was not on the menu. No problem! They whipped up a great oyster stew for her on the spot. I took a chance on the crab cakes (I never order crab cakes unless I'm in MD)and was rewarded with 2 moist cakes filled with crab and just enough breading to tie it all together. Of course, we all had raw oysters as well - Bluepoint - fresh & sweet. We informed the staff as we came in that we had a show to go to & they had us out in plenty of time without feeling rushed.
Unfortunately Jack's this past Christmas Eve was off of their game, evident the moment that I walked in. The owner, normally very chipper and attentive seemed very distant and not focused that evening. Our table wasn't ready yet so we went to the bar and saw a slew of dirty glasses piled up at the end of the bar and no bartender to be seen for quite some time. Again, a sign that something was wrong.
Finally sat down for dinner and the dining room seemed to be very chaotic and something I very rarely see at Jacks, multiple dropped plates and slow efforts to come and get it cleaned up. We had to warn a large party walking by our table to be seated to be careful not to slip on the food and sauces still on the floor and not cleaned up yet.
We ordered our meals and I was quite disappointed when my lobster tail came out and it was cold. The others in my party all had cold potatoes and the food was lukewarm at best. I sent my lobster tail back and instead of preparing me a new one, they just barely warmed it up and placed it on a very hot bowl and brought it back to me. They never brought out any melted butter to go with my tail and when I asked for that, they brought it out in a small bowl and not in a warmer and it was lukewarm at best.
I have to say that I was very disappointed with all of our meals as well as our experience. When I pay top dollar for a dining experience, I expect it to be perfect and unfortunately this trip to Jack's was not. Everyone has an off night so we will be back as Jack's is normally spot on and one of our favorite places to go in Albany, NY. Hopefully next time will be back to normal.
Food was exceptional. Traditional seafood and steaks done with exceptional preparation and service that defies our time and current culture. Dinner was more than a meal. It was a culinary experience. The service was exceptional. The wait staff are educated on the menu and not novices.
Top notch for Albany or any place
We visited Jack's for the 1st time on Saturday evening. We had read some not so great reviews, so we were curious. But it was wonderful.
We were seated quickly, drink orders were taken and filled in moments, the waiter was attentive without being over zealous. The food was wonderful. It was hot when it arrived, was flavorful and had very nice portion sizes.
The restaurant was a little pricey, but not ridiculously over priced.
The only negative was that is was a bit chilly in the dining room we were in, so I kept my jacket draped over my shoulders. Everything else was great.
We will return with obnoxious regularity!!!
Overwhelming feeling that Jack’s is struggling. Stopped in on our way home to New England for what we thought would be a Christmas prelude. No decorations, none- not even a wisp of autumn. Bathrooms were
marginal when it comes to cleanliness. Food was, at best, uninspired. Only good spot was very pleasant waitstaff.
Disappointed with Thanksgiving event. Service was very slow. Dinner from start to finish took three hours. Took a good 20 minutes before we saw our waiter. We ordered drinks and had to wait long time for delivery. All in all everything was too slow. This was out second time at Jack's for Thanksgiving. Very doubtful returning next year.
My wife and I had a nice Thanksgiving Dinner. It was my first time there and I thought it was nice. Some of the old pictures on the wall were neat. We would go there again to check out the other items offered on the menu some other time. I thought the staff was nice and attentive.
Had a reservation that they accepted through Open Table only to show up to a closed restaurant with staff standing inside behind a locked door. It was a late reservation (9:30 pm) but we had 8-10 people and big appetites! Real loss for Jack’s that night and probably beyond!
It was our first time at Jacks and the experience was wonderful. The service was great, we didn't feel forgotten about, which can happen in a large place with a lot of costumers around. Our food was on time, and I didn't feel like I was waiting forever to get a dish. The shrimp cocktail fish were HUGE and worth every penny. The menu pricing is a little high but if you're willing to pay for quality food and awesome service then it's worth it.
A downtown Albany staple which consistently awes. The baked cod is the best, better than anything you would find in New England. Love the presentation and the use of fresh vegetables in season. This is a special place, it is no wonder it is in business for over 100 years.
