About Jack's Oyster House

For nearly a century, Jack’s has been an integral part of Albany’s landscape. Long considered the hot spot for politicians and the famous, Jack’s ambiance is reminiscent of the clubby New York style restaurants so in vogue today.

Opened in 1913 by Jack Rosenstein, the restaurant has been continuously operated by the same family and is now under the direction of grandson, Brad. Joined by Brad is Executive Chef Larry Schepici. Together, they work to create the ultimate dining experience for you each and every time you visit. In their dedication to the tradition of Jack’s, they have developed a menu to satisfy their faithful clientele as well as delight a new generation of Jack’s customers. Chef Schepici's exciting and unique cooking style, along with our staffs' warmth and hospitality, will make for many memorable dining moments.

This was our first time at Jacks. We found it through Open Table. The menu was decent and our server was great. We would go again for a special occasion

One of the best steaks I've ever had. Period! I had the New York strip (choice cut) and they offer a prime cut. I intend to try the prime cut next. And there will be a next time!

The food was excellent and the service excellent. This is a old time favorite that will flex the menu to your desired want. Just ask your waiter and the chef will do as you ask. I had an excellent fried oyster plate yet it’s not on the menu. Yum!

Had a reservation that they accepted through Open Table only to show up to a closed restaurant with staff standing inside behind a locked door. It was a late reservation (9:30 pm) but we had 8-10 people and big appetites! Real loss for Jack’s that night and probably beyond!

It was our first time at Jacks and the experience was wonderful. The service was great, we didn't feel forgotten about, which can happen in a large place with a lot of costumers around. Our food was on time, and I didn't feel like I was waiting forever to get a dish. The shrimp cocktail fish were HUGE and worth every penny. The menu pricing is a little high but if you're willing to pay for quality food and awesome service then it's worth it.

A downtown Albany staple which consistently awes. The baked cod is the best, better than anything you would find in New England. Love the presentation and the use of fresh vegetables in season. This is a special place, it is no wonder it is in business for over 100 years.

The service was extremely slow. The server does it all, busing tables, making drinks and running food. She did it all with a smile but we were often left waiting for a drink or for everyone to have their food.

Crab cakes, filet and stuffed lobster were all delish. Salmon was over cooked and for the price it should have been on the mark.

Would go again, even with slow service. Jacks is an institution. And worth the stop.

We frequented Jack's often for a number of years, then a few years back we had a very bad meal there, we were put out by it and felt for the money , the word BAD should not be synonymous with Jack's. We did not return till this weekend. Boy they were spot on, that is to say, the place, people, and once again the food was JACK'S AS USUAL. PERFECT. my only miss was the exotic oyster were all gone (Saturday night ?) the blue points were fresh and juicy , but I can usually get that variety anywhere. They did name it Jack's Oyster House. Don't leave with out checking out the dessert menu.

While in Albany why not indulge and eat at a fancy restaurant downtown with parking across the street. Delicious food. Took selfies with the porcelain dog on the way out. Friendly staff. Food very delicious.

Great personal reception and immediate seating. Our waitress Taylor was a gem. Friendly ,efficient and knowledgable. Steaks were cooked to perfection. Lobster tail was huge and fresh. No drawn butter was a disappointment but should have asked. Excellent Creme brûlée to finish off the evening.

The drinks were good. The chowder was good. The petit filet mignon was cooked to perfection, but two of us ordered the same thing and I received a lesser value of the mignon.

The best shrimp cocktail and oysters in the capital region! Steak was phenominal and cooked to perfection. The cheesecake was the best part of the meal and unlike any dessert I've had before. Would come back again. Service was also impeccable!

3 sisters getting together, which rarely happens. One lives out of town and was here for long weekend. She loved every bit of her petit beef and salmon dinner. 2nd sister enjoyed all but her red cabbage, which had an addition that detracted from the cabbage flavor. I agreed. May have been a bit of brown sugar and cinnamon? I had only the Jack's boat chowder. It was good enough. Ordered the caesar salad without addition of anchovies, but was disappointed that no anchovy flavor was present in the dressing at all. That is what I was expected. My white Italian wine choice was very good. We had a great server, knowledgeable and super personality! Oh...chose a booth but wow...very straight and hard on the back. All in all, we had a wonderful dinner together and hope to do so again in the the near future. Thank you.

We thought the signature dish --1913 recipe crab cakes--would be a good bet, but they came out still frozen inside. It was the most expensive dinner, my husband said, for a microwaved meal.

We have been here several times and unfortunately we will not being going back. First we get there and the hostess wanted to give us a table outside the bathroom. So we asked to have a table in main dining room. He stated oh yea sure but the leg room is tight, we have sat in the booths in main dining room before and there was no problem with leg room. Then we sat at our table for a good 10 minutes before we were approached. The restaurant had a very high volume odor of bleach. It was terrible. Other patrons were annoyed by this odor also.

Then we get our food and my husband's steak was fatty, unseasoned Nd way overdone )ordered medium rare). My steak was also overdone ( asked for medium rare).

The quality is not the sMe and unfortunately for the price we will not be returning

Of course, Jack's is a landmark restaurant in downtown Albany, and we enjoy dining there when in the area. The NY Strip was delicious, just the way I like it, ordered medium rare, and was done to perfection. Also tried the Boat Chowder, which was superb, and nice and hot, exceptional flavor. Thank you.

This was our first time visiting this establishment, since we are new to the area.
The meal was wonderful! We went there early and it hadn't gotten crowded yet,
We were celebrating our 32 anniversary.
The steaks were cooked perfectly, and dessert was wonderful. We cant wait to go back!

It was only my second time there. It was for my boyfriend's birthday, right after work so I can't really comment on the specific recommendations above. Other people I know like it very , very much. I know its reputation and that it's a well known in established restaurant in Albany for many years.
McGuire's is very good, and I've been to 677 Prime a number of times and I like it there also. But neither can compare to Jack's. 677 seems to be all the rage for newer /younger people who want to see and be seen, which is fine, but I don't care about that.
I definitely think Jack's is the best place. The food is fabulous. I love the atmosphere, and the service is superb and very welcoming. From now on, Jack's will always be my first choice. I'm glad I remembered to go there.

The food was great.
The waiter we had ruined all of a good thing.
It started with a unlevel table that the waiter refused to accommodate fixing.
I believe he was drunk.
Horrible service all the way around. No class, manors.
Took my steak knife while I was eating clearing the other plates on table.
Then came back 10 min later and took mu plate before I could ask for a knife back.

$300 bill and no management to talk to after complaints.

Food was very good and service was excellent . Our waiter Bill went above and beyond when we came back after the theater to report we lost our key fob. He not only searched in the restaurant for us, (we found it after returning to the theater) he called us later to be certain we had located it. Thank you Bill.

For being an oyster house, the menu is extensively steaks. I ordered the seafood stew which had large plump clams that were tough, lobster shells with only one bite of lobster and a variety of other seafood. A real disappointment. I observed an adjacent table with the same dish that looked more appealing. Can't vouch for consistency in the kitchen, but I would not venture there again.
