It's a nice place with a lot of history. The lunch prices aren't too bad and the service was excellent. I brought my son there for his 30th birthday and the food choice were good and atmosphere nice as well.
Had lunch here with my daughter. Very attentive service. Excellent gin gimlet and fantastic clam chowder (they wouldn't share the recipe!) I had salmon and asparagus salad and my daughter had the chopped salad with shrimp. Both beautifully presented. Also, hot rolls and butter on the table. The only fault I found was the coffee, which was mediocre.
I hadn't been to Jack's in many years. Last time I was there, it was great, but I've heard mixed reviews in recent years and I've never wanted to brave it on an expensive special night out. Restaurant week seemed the perfect time to give it a try.
When we were seated, we were given a regular menu. I had to ask the waiter for the restaurant week specials - pretty sure he wrote us off then and there. The menu said the meal came with choice of "soup of the day" or "salad of the day." He never told us what either was, or asked which we wanted. Eventually salad showed up. It wasn't bad, but nothing special - just lettuce with a few shredded carrots. Dinner itself was good - pretty small portions, but not uncommon on restaurant week. Dessert was pretty mediocre. The whole experience was incredibly rushed. We weren't even through our first glass of wine (nor had our salad plates been cleared) when our entrees arrived. (In a restaurant that was more than half empty on Saturday night.) We weren't offered coffee when our dessert showed up. It was less than forty-five minutes from the time we were seated until our check came.
Food was not bad for the $25 special price, but would have been very disappointing at full price, and the service definitely told me I do not want to come back for a more expensive meal.
It was my anniversary of five you always go to Jack oyster House for our anniversary and this experience was not what we know and love
The happiness, pleasure, enjoyment and cherished memories of important life events provide personal satisfaction that can't be bought and are beyond what words struggle to convey. Now Jack's Oyster House has been added to that most important collage of life experiences for us that are held dear and fondly shared with family and friends.
Always a great choice! Food and service are excellent. Try the cheesecake for dessert.
Based on all the reviews I'd seen on open table, I expected the place to be very busy. Maybe because it was the Saturday before Easter, but at 7pm it was dead. Our waiter was excellent and the best part of the experience. I'm a harsh judge of seafood places after having lived in Boston, but I really expected better. Menu seemed limited and overpriced for what it was. The location and the building itself were nice and could have made for a nice experience. I don't mind paying a lot for a good meal out, but I didn't feel "wow'd" at all by this meal.
Terrible service. Dirty glasses. Cod was over cooked
Place was great. The only thing I would say is they promote a 'New England Style' fish chowder. I thought it would have more seafood and it was more Manhattan style than New
We went prior to an event at the Times Union Center. It was a perfect dinner. Food was outstanding.
Service was good. We had a booth which was nice and private however the cushion on my side was ripped and not supportive. My steak dinner was very good and cooked as ordered. My wife's steak had to be sent back as it was medium rare and she had asked for medium well. After a short wait she received a new steak that was cooked correctly. Waiter was apologetic for the mistake.
I brought my father there on Sunday for his 77th birthday brunch. He had not been there in more than 40 years and we wanted a special place to celebrate. There was only one other table occupied at the time we were there so the time it took items to arrive, coupled with the inattentive staff, just made no sense at all. Specifically, the staff left the front door wide open for 15 minutes on a 30 degree day to move the delivery food items to the kitchen -without regard to our seats in proximity to the door. Second, the service was truly a disappointment (again we were only one of two tables in the entire establishment). Third, it took quite literally 40 minutes from removal of the appetizer to delivery of the main dish. We were only 4 adults! Unless they were going deep sea fishing for the crab in the crab cakes I see no reason for the delay. If there was a manager to complain to we would have. We were all truly disappointed and cannot see returning.
Oysters on the half shell were outstanding. Salad and dinner accompaniments were fresh and very tasty, Surf and turf, filet mignon and swordfish was spot on! Finished up with flourless chocolate cake and decaf for a terrific ending to a very satisfying dinner in a historic venue in downtown Albany within easy walking distance of the TU Center.
Went for a friend’s birthday dinner and it was very nice. First time going but knew it was going to be at least $40 per person. But you get what you pay for- excellent service and really good seafood and wine. A perfect girls’ night out to get fancy and splurge once in awhile.
Service was slow and inattentive. Menu was limited. Food quality was inconsistent and not a good value based on a quality:pricing ratio.
I have frequented this restaurant many times throughout the past 30+ years and was extremely disappointed.
Very nice! Lots of memories over many decades....
My date and I went here for dinner on a Sunday in March with a 6pm reservation. The place was fairly empty but we had a wait to check in. You could tell that this place has been here for years and has historic charm. The food however wasn't top notch for the cost. They were out of the 2.5lb lobster so I opted for the lobster tail. My dish arrived with vegetables that looked like they were sitting under a food warmer and the mashed potatoes were bland. Wouldn't go here again.
Great time at Jack's. Oysters, martinis, filet mignon, all fantastic. Service was excellent. People were very nice. It's a really fun place.
Always good food drinks for buisness
Not much else to say
Staff as friendly and professional. Cook was accommodating to my allergies and made something that wasn’t on the menu. The oysters was delicious
Leon was fantastic! We have been to Jack's before and enjoyed it but Leon made our visit even better!
Seafood Fish bowl chowder , OYSTERS, creamed spinach, tower of seafood all wonderful. Amber was friendly, knowledgeable & attentive, matre d was great to visit with So glad we made our first but not last visit there!
Was in town over the weekend from downstate...'82 UALBANY grad. Had early reservations and the service was impeccable. Overall, the food was very good to excellent. Shrimp cocktail was a little chewy. Great mushroom soup. Steak Diane was very tender & tasty; my friend said the NY Strip with Gorgonzola cheese on top was one of the best he'd ever had. Drinks and wine prices were very reasonable. The place has been there forever...and isn't going anywhere anytime soon!
Jack's is a landmark of downtown Albany. The food and service were both very good. The prices are on the high end, especially the specials so keep that in mind. Overall a nice evening
The ambience at Jack’s was delightful! The old building’s architecture was wonderful! The food was delicious, the server attentive, and the birthday boy had a wonderful time! Would definitely dine there again!
I love going to Jacks. The food is always top notch. Last time we went I had a special which consisted of a petite filet, crab cake and a giant shrimp. It was phenomenal! The atmosphere is quaint, it's like a step back in time. I would highly recommend Jacks!
This was my first visit to Jacks as I've heard so much about this place. The food and wine was very high end and I enjoyed it, no complaints. However being as though I was on a date, I was sat in the front entrance of the restaurant right by the door so we could feel a draft. Not to mention it didn't have the same ambiance as the main dining area with the jazz music. I requested to be moved not only for this reason, but a couple with loud disrespectful children were already seated right by our booth. I was really in shock that the restaurant would allow small children who are disorderly in after 7pm. That is usually when a lot of romantic dates are going on and we certainly do not want noise. Of course they accomdated us and moved us, but they really should think about a no child policy in the evening time. I couldn't believe the parents just allowed their child to scream in such a manner while others are trying to dine and eat, we weren't the only couple who requested to move to the main dining area either.
Waiter Alex not very attentive. Other than that enjoyable.
Went on valentine’s day with prior reservations and requested a booth. we ended up getting a table packed next to everyone. Furthermore we didn’t get water till 20 mins. Ordered starter and entree for the both of us. Waited as other guest that arrived atlest a half hour after us and still got ALL their food before us. We ended up asking for the manager after the waiter came out with stakes for the couple that was seated a half an hr later than us! An hour later..... They ended up boxing our food and was on the house of course........What a bad experience and I think more should have been done to accommodate us. I use to buy gift cards to the place for family I liked it so much. Have to say I won’t be back again won’t be referring anyone in the future. All in all a bottle of wine would have been nice or something more than “jacks to go” on valentine’s
An old establishment - quite characteristic of Albany. The building the restaurant is in is historic; the business has been around for 100 years.
- Staff is very well trained
- Drink service at the bar
- Food is delicious
- Interior lighting is uncomfortably bright to cater to older patrons
- Speed of service is subpar
- 30 minutes and 1 reminder to be seated at a table with prior reservation
- After being seated:
- 10 minutes to get water
- 30 minutes to place order for drinks+appetizer+entree
- 50 minutes to get a bottle of wine
- 1 hour to get bread at the table
- 1:20 to get appetizer
- 1:45 to get dinner (by which time we simply took it to go).
- 5 minutes to get the check, sign, and leave.
Very good experience. My girlfriend and I enjoyed our dinner.
Exceptional meal and dining experience. The food was excellent and the presentation was outstanding. The service was terrif8c- attentive without being rushed.
World Class venue and traditional Albany hospitality!
Excellent food and service
The boat chowder is a must starter
Highly recommend this restaurant
Jacks ntable cuisine... the seafood and steak were delicious . Vegan fare is bland. Very pricey.
I love Jack's and go whenever I can. The wait staff is great, the owner is always around to make sure everything was good. The food is excellent, the prices are reasonable and the atmosphere is perfect. I love their Seafood soup!!!! That's a must have every time I go.
I am not from this area and we wanted to celebrate. It was a good choice, food great and so was service. If I go back to this area, I will definitely go back.
Outstanding food and service as always. Looking forward to our next visit!
Jack's is a reliable standout in Albany. We had the pleasure of Leon's service on Friday. He is an energetic and efficient waiter. Brad roams the floor and checks in on everyone at some point. The personal attention is genuinely appreciated. To say that Jack's is a local gem is an understatement. The ambiance is exquisite and the menu is refined. Entrée preparations are thoughtful and balanced. Desserts are charming. As appropriate for dinner after work any night of the week as it is to celebrate an occasion. Step into history and prepare to be taken care of.
Always love Jack's! The service is terrific, the food is always lovely. I love the selections. We always consider this a place to go when we want something special.
